Nova Scotia Hidden Gem - a must play!

This golf course is regarded by locals as unquestionably one of the best tracks in Nova Scotia. Lightning-quick, firm, greens are arguably the most challenging in the province. It is extremely well cared for by a devoted staff. The four link-style holes along the waters of the Northumberland Strait offer tremendous views and photo opportunities; especially the signature #4, Par 3. The course winds back through a lovely wooded area before concluding with three difficult finishing holes. Wind plays a significant part in the play of this course; every round unique as a result. A solid game off the tee (of which there are five sets for all level of golfers), well placed iron shots, and feel for the greens will reward the player. Well placed sand and water hazards on every hole offer fair play. The fairways are reasonably wide with no worry of hitting into any housing development; there is not a house in play. Staff is friendly and attentive, and attempt to ensure reasonable pace of play. Do not miss the clubhouse deck and restaurant/bar after the round. The menu, although not extensive, offers delicious daily specials for everyone at reasonable prices.
Don’t be distracted by the hype of the other big name courses in the province; this is a must play and great value for the money.

Disappointed

We have been playing this course every year in March for the past 10 years. We feel this course is continuing to deteriorate in condition; we were disappointed for what we had paid. We felt the green speed was inconsistent; and very hard. The fairways were in tough shape.
There was no course marshall to be seen on the course when the pace dropped off on the back nine. The starter was efficient and friendly.
We saw the cart once during our round (about the 6th hole).
I think this may be our last trip to Hillcrest.
I guess this is okay for the first round of the year or for people who struggle to hit fairways (as opposed to houses along the fairway), but really this could be so much better with some TLC.

A Little Disappointing

We had no issues checking in, or with the players assistant or starter. The course was generally in better shape than in the past but still needs much TLC. Old cart paths need to be rebuilt or completely removed. A five hour round is unacceptable in this day and age. Where is the Marshall? Does anyone care about the course enough to fix ball marks? We each repaired 3-4 marks on every green! Sand traps are in desperate need of work. We saw the beverage cart once on the ninth hole - Really? This course could really be so much better with some honest work but still fun to play for the price.

Thank you for taking time to fill out the online review. As you noted the course has improved tremendously over the last year. We still have lots of great improvement in the works for the future including cart paths, sand traps, etc. We hope that you will come check out the course in the future as the course keeps improving. ~HC

Old favourite

We have played this course several times over the past 6-7 years but found the course to be in overall better shape. The greens were true but the sand traps still require more sand in order to play properly. Tees and fairways were in good shape. Pace was somewhat slow. We saw the cart girl only twice and dd not eat at the club as there was a wedding.

Lots of fun!

Only issue that I had was the condition of many of the traps. Part of this was due to the fact that I would not consider sand to be "regulation". The other issue was people not raking the traps at all. I understand the traps can be large, but not trying at all is inexcusable.

Dear Rob3849783,

Thanks for your feedback regarding your recent experience. I am happy that you enjoyed your round of golf. We do have improvements planned for our traps in the near future. We hope to see you again soon and have a great day!
