Sanctuary at River Strand Golf and Country Club
Played On 11/30/2014Tale of many
We played the Sanctuary and Estuary. The Sanctuary a full 5, very typical of PGA layout, wide sweeping fairways with water near by enough to keep you very honest. Approaches to green with irons had to be handled with thought, you simply do not whack the ball and roll out it on Arthur Hill elevated greens guarded by sand. SOmetimes I wonder who is more brutal Pete Dye or Arthur Hill. The 9 holes flowed very well and the vistas exceptional.
The Estuary is a collection of like 3 courses, you have long drives between estates. A number of blind holes that when played for the first time are a disaster I did not get the feeling of an even flow to this 9.
The greens were running between 11 and 12, and as they are crowned sticking was a challenge. For some reason the holes were not cut cut sharp and true, they were rounded which often spun the ball out of control.
Fairways, amazing, Rye grass supreme.
Would like to play Tributary to have full understanding of the entire property.
Suncoast Golf Center
Played On 11/28/2014Surprise
Having been by this place many times, it reminded me of Caddyshack. So I stayed away. With new owners I felt to give it a try.
Glad we did, met Scott new owner and he informed me of changes. New landscape is going in, greens are being rolled.. Fairway grasses are being seeded. There is even elevation on some of the holes, and a partial island green. And, half way a nice bench to sit. There are holes which could be made longer and I believe they should.
Went with my wife and we had a very relaxing time. She was thrilled as she got the birdie.
Pace was great and the practise awesome. We will return.
Once grass grows on fairways and if they make some of he holes longer then I would give it a 5.
Greens are fantastic.
The Preserve Golf Club
Played On 11/27/2014Good be good
With the correct amount of grounds keeping, especially on the fairways. THis course could be great.
But, as it is not, there are plenty of other courses to play.
The feeling is one of a course that is ready for new ownership.
Heron Creek Golf and Country Club - Oaks/Marsh Course
Played On 11/23/2014Great golf venue
The practise facilities are as good as they get. We love to show up well in advance and go through a great warm up routine. Driving, pitching, chipping, putting.
One of the very few courses in the area that actually have elevation changes on the Oaks course.
The marsh and creek are truly a walk in the great outdoors, if you like to take pictures you will not be disappointed.
No easy greens, if you do not have a close game you will hate this place, better yet, find one it is fun.
You cannot walk this course, no chance, there are place where it takes you 4 to 5 minutes to drive to the next hole. But awesome drives, african safari type rides.
Greens are fast, run true, but you must take the time to read them. Just walk up and put and you will not do well.
My only negative is the cart path, great wide concrete paths, but once you land on them your ball is toast.
Royal Woodbine Golf Club
Played On 10/11/2014Mixed feelings
My schedule got in the way and I was stuck playing on Saturday. The pace of play on week ends is brutal, this course is a gem and plays right on the slope published.
Week ends bring out the casual layers who do not get it, and do not look at the slope, so you get slow pace of play. And cart path only did not help.
It would have been nice if we knew in advance that all par 3 were aerated.
Fortunately the marshalls helped us to get ahead of the beginners in front of us or else we would not have finished before dark. Problem in front of the beginners was a tournament, so we double up on holes in the front 9, a pain but better then just sitting and waiting.
Only negative ever for this course is pace of play, otherwise I love it and play it 15 to 20 times per season.
Chedoke Civic Golf Course - Martin
Played On 10/04/2014Typical gov course
It is such a shame, with a small amount of effort the layout and scenery of this property could be must play. The scenery and potential to make this course awesome is there.
But, it is what it is, a City trying to make everyone happy, dog walkers and runners need to be where they belong. Sprayed a shot and almost took out a dog and the walker, no fun.
However, who am I to say maybe you like this type of course, I do not.
Most of the time you are driving around looking for the next hole as paths are poor.
And there are blind spots, do not expect to yell 4 when you hit ball into the woods. But, the ball goes through the woods and can hit golfers standing on tee. First time you would not know, but those who do need to be on the look out and understand they will get hit by an errant shot.
Wake up Hamilton and advise of potential for this.
Settlers' Ghost Golf Club
Played On 09/24/2014Aerated
We would not have driven to Barrie from Toronto if we knew in advance that the greens had sand on them and had been recently aerated.
If the greens would have been better we would give them a 4/5 overall.
Just a couple of minutes off HWY 400 makes it an easy course to get to.

Turtle Creek Golf
Played On 07/01/2014Fun outing
The front 9 is really a lot of fun, holes are short but layout makes for interesting shot decisions.
Back box location makes it a pain on some of the holes as you have to walk back, so being lazy we played from white, almost every hole is reachable from the whites.
We took advantage of the red hot deals which made this a great outing as my son is a beginner. We took a nice drive through the Halton hills to get to course. Back nine felt hoggey and set up on 10 and 11, with a little bit of work can match Carolina golf. It is a real pain to hit good drives down the middle and then not be able to find ball.
But for the money a great place to practice.
Jacaranda West Country Club
Played On 4/28/2013If you enjoy Florida outdoors, you must play this course. Lush.
Great greens, some of the best in this part of the country. And not set up stupid where you roll off after making a great shot.
Sand on the course is like talcum powder, no construction sand on this course.
Nice blend of open fairways where you can open up the dawg and tight ones where you have risk and reward, hammer it and you are golden, go off line and you pay.
Dog legs are moderate, no reason to get hurt on any of them.
Hole 4 is a thrill to be on in 2 as you have to carry a wonderful lake on this par 5.
Boca Royale Golf & Country Club
Played On 12/15/2012We live in Venice, getting to this course is super super easy to get to. Altough you are near residential, only on one hole do houses come into play.
If you miss the fairway you are not killed, the rough is fair. tress only get in the way if you really screw up. Greens are very well protected by lovely sand traps. Greens were very fair and fast, puts went in as expected.
Nice blend of holes, some bump and run and some where you carry water to green.
Well done Boca.
Staff is great. They told us it was backed up but we still finished in 4 hours.
The ponds are just loaded with local birds, great to see.
