Boone Golf Club
Played On 09/04/2020Best public course nearby
Boone is a pretty course. I haven't played it as much this year as in the psst because the prices have soared and it is hard to get a deal online. But it stays full so apparently many are able and willing to pay the price.
Cedar Rock Country Club
Played On 06/13/2020Be on your toes
Cedar Rock is in excellent shape and not overpriced like many mountain courses in summer. What it does have in common with the others is tricky greens and fairways that require a fair bit of precision. No. 5 and 12 will get your attention. All in all, I wish it were closer to my summer home.
Boone Golf Club

Beautiful course and fun to play. Summer fees are pretty high so I only play when I can get a hot deal on Golf Now. Busy yesterday but still played in less than four hours. Take a drink. No drink cart and restaurant isn't open early. Walking gives you an extra workout. Flatlanders like me will find the greens very tricky to read.
Boone Golf Club

Scenic course with a nice layout. Greens are extremely challenging. Large, fast and no flat spots. You can easily roll off the green on a 4-foot putt on some greens. Prices are high to nail the summer vacationers, but you can get deals on Golf Now as low as $12. Staff is friendly and helpful but no drink carts so bring your own hydration. Work your way around carefully and you will have a good time.
Rolling Oaks at World Woods Golf Club
Played On 01/11/2017Well worth a visit
Said to be one of the top-rated courses in the country. I believe it. Clubhouse is not fancy but they have good driving ranges and putting greens. I got a special with a rewards discount, so played for only $22. Two courses; I played Rolling Oaks. Hardest part for me was the greens. They are large. Not especially fast but tricky to judge the speed. Bunkers are not the white powdery sand I'm used to but I managed to get out of three without difficulty.
Jekyll Island Golf Club - Pine Lakes Course
Played On 05/23/2015My lucky day
Had to wait on the driving range for four deer to cross. Ran into deer at close range on several holes. Eagle circled me close overhead on No. 12. Have seen gators, tortoises, snakes and other critters previously. I played Indian Mound course alone on Memorial Day when I thought it would be packed. Foursome graciously let me pass on No. 2 and I had it to myself afterward. Played in less than three hours, in perfect weather and for $18. Doesn't get much better, even though I didn't play my best golf. Course will get your attention, without frustrating you. Play it.
Quail Hollow Golf Course
Played On 08/19/2014Good when dry
You don't want to play this course the day after a heavy rain. The bunkers were filled, the fairways soaking wet. Generally, it is fine when dry. A lot of wildlife and a mix of easy and difficult holes, from the white tees. Cost about $26-$32 most of the time.
