Merlot/Chardonnay at Poppy Ridge Golf Course
Played On 03/17/2014Wonderful Course!
First time at Poppy Ridge. This course is beautiful and well kept and well manicured. I must suggest you have to play well from sand bunkers to play this course because they are EVERYWHERE! I agree with the many reviews that there are really few trees and the grounds are very open yet hilly and picturesque. Holy gale force winds! We had an early tee time but until the clouds vacated it was cold and extremely windy. We played Merlot first then Chardonnay, and the guys at the pro shop said Merlot is higher in elevation and windy, so we were fairly warned. The marshals were informative and kept pace of play, our foursome did nicely and rarely had to wait for the group in front. I gave this course 5 stars on most everything except value for the money, even a deal on Golf Now only cut the price to $65. I believe in getting what I pay for but besides the vineyards nearby I have found similar golf at other courses for half the price. It is a wonderful course but at that price I will. It be playing there too often.
I forgot to mention the practice facilities. The driving range is immaculate and the range is sodded which means no hard mats to hit from. The practice range also provides several sand bunkers to practice from as well and numerous putting and chipping areas. One more comment about the sand bunkers...although I dislike being in the bunker, the quality of sand is unlike any other course. Superb quality sand, even though I hate being in it!
Diablo Hills Golf Course
Played On 01/12/2014Not bad for the money
Let's face it, this is a short 9 hole course that is mediocre. The course is fairly well maintained and offers fun golf for those that only have time to play nine. I have to say it's not worth the regular $17 green fee, luckily they do have some hot deals on golf now for $7-12 in the early mornings at times. Give this course a shot now and then, but never pay full price!

This course is challenging and enjoyable! In spite of winter conditions the course overall was in great shape. Definitely will return.

I hate to give this course a negative review, because it is a great course, beautifully designed, but poorly managed. Beginning with the staff at the pro shop, don't know his name but the guy behind the desk, smug and young with dark hair is just not friendly, you try to make conversation and be chipper because let's face it, we're golfing, not at work, here to relax, and this guy barely says a word, takes your money, and off you go...just not the gentleman you'd expect for this gentlemans game.
The greens are my greatest complaint at this course. I have played here off and on for the past two years. The greens are always in horrible condition. Ball marks rampant all around, spike marks, even a divot on one green! Where are the Marshall's? Where is etiquette? A suggestion I have is that the pro shop have available the low cost plastic ball mark repair tools to give out for free. I have seen this technique at other courses and it works nicely and more than pays for itself when the outcome means a smoother putting surface and satisfied guests!
The fairways are extremely hard, almost like concrete on some holes jarring your wrists when making a perfect swing.
My dissatisfaction is in the management of what could be a fantastic golf course. This course offers beautiful scenery and is in a great location, excellent driving range and practice greens/pitching/chipping areas. Owners and management should WAKE UP! I would love to return to this course and be proud to know such a fantastic course is located so close to home, but the course needs work! Take pride in ownership of this golf course and turn it into the fantastic course it should be!
