The Amelia River Club
Played On 03/21/2024Steady as always
This course is always a good option for players who are not private club members as it's a solid layout, has good greens, overseeded fairways, a great pro shop, and a killer kitchen.
The carts need to be refreshed and they did add GPS to them which is a nice plus. Always a pleasant experience to play the river club.
Deer Island Country Club
Played On 03/16/2024Bring lots of balls!
This is a great layout, same course designer that did Bay Hill. Water on every hole so for the long hitters playing back it is very important to know your carry distances as we rinsed several balls that we thought were quality shots due to not knowing. the course or seeing the layout. GPS on carts would make a ton of difference and help players at every level to visually see what's ahead.
Greens were slow which was our only complaint. The layout is excellent, this is the toughest set of par 3's we've played in a while as we played back and the forced carry is your only option on them so you'd better have your long iron and hybrid games dialed in for this one folks.
Overall, very good, great staff, pace of play was great, weather was awesome. Saw a ton of alligators and wildlife which was great. Views were awesome with the lake on both sides of the course (yes, water on every hole remember?). Overall I give it a "B+" on my rating and would recommend it for sure as a must play.
Thank you for the detailed review and recommendation! We're glad you enjoyed the layout and our wildlife.
The Club at Osprey Cove
Played On 03/07/2024First time visitor review
Great layout, enjoyed the design aspects of this course as it is a true lowcountry type of experience.
The course was cart path only as the conditions were wet which was unfortunate in that I would not have booked this had I known due to a knee replacement which makes lots of walking fairly painful. The staff when I let them know I was not made aware of the cart path only status upon booking had no love for me at all and basically said take it up with GolfNow. So I sat on hold for 30 minutes with GolfNow with zero help or anyone picking up the phone so I gave up and decided not to eat my $130 and make the best of it. Asked the golf staff if I could get a disabled flag to ride with and steer clear of the obvious wet areas and the pro was in his office only feet away and could not be bothered as he and his staff didn't bother to even entertain the question but instead simply told the front desk attendant no and gave it no consideration at all. Again, really nice representation of the PGA of America's ethos on display by this golf staff....
Greens were better than average. Pace of play was lousy in that we had to skip 2 holes as a 4 some in front of us simply would not be courteous and wave us through as a two some who was literally right on their heels. Golf etiquette is not on display at this facility... After skipping two holes we made our way around the course in decent time despite all of the walking that cart path only brought with it.
Would I play it again? Yes but for a discounted rate only so as to offset the BS that came with this round it would not be worth the money otherwise. The members seem unhappy as we were in the clubhouse at the turn getting a few refreshments and upon learning that we were not members were all but shunned which felt terrific as a guest...
Long story short, great course, bring your thick skin to put up with nonsense, but do play it as the layout is really good and the double green on 18 is really a nice feature. Just don't expect to be treated very well and if you can put up with that then go give it a go.
Sanctuary Golf Club
Played On 02/25/2024Great track kinda far from anything though
Great course. Good greens big fairways. Lots of tee options and great bunkers. For the fees they charge they should have water on the course, a beverage cart, and towels in the carts for guests. It’s pricey for sure but is a fun track. Go see it for yourself
Sanctuary Golf Club
Played On 02/25/2024Great track, wish it was closer to me
Big fairways, well kept, fast greens, bunkers are in great shape, and pace of play is pretty good overall. I try to get there at least 1 time per Month but it's a bit of a haul to get there. Wish it were closer to JAX. They need water on the course and for the amount they charge towels in the carts would not be an unreasonable ask IMO. Being a low digit single handicap I like the place and get to hit nearly every club in the bag which is a real treat.
The Amelia River Club
Played On 05/07/2023What a turnaround
This club is entirely different than it was 3 years ago in the best of ways. Everything is improved and it’s in great condition. Really great day on a great track. Go see it!
Thanks so much for your wonderful review, FSHnGLF. We are thrilled to hear how much you enjoyed your time with us. Please visit again soon. Thanks for choosing The Amelia River Club!
Omni Amelia Island Resort - Ocean Links
Played On 02/27/2016Great layout. Great views. Need to play it more than once to understand it
Blind shots and elevated greens make club selection tough. See it twice and you'll play it better I'd wager. Bunkers were thin and a few greens crusty but overall a good test and pretty fun course. Views were outstanding!!
Looking forward to getting another go at this track
Buffalo Run Golf Course
Played On 07/25/2015All you can handle
Played it back in the CO State Amateur years ago and have returned to play it over and over for the years following at least once per year even though I live in NC now. It's spectacular.
Long and demanding but very fair. Great greens, perfect fairways, and plenty of tee options for those who don't feel up to the 7400+ yardage. Plays slightly uphill a lot so the yardage is deceiving even though it looks like it's laying flat; its not. Just more of the goodness that is Buffalo Run.
The Golf Club at Bear Dance
Played On 07/24/2015All you can handle from the tips
Spectacular in every regard. Some of the best greens in the State consistently. Have played it for years on my annual trip out to CO to play for 4 days. This one always makes the cut; it's just a special place and every hole is memorable which is rare; most notably the "bear paw" with bunkers representing the paw of a bear and one of the most undulating greens you'll ever putt on.
Great views, wildlife everywhere, few homes, wind will get you if you play late, plays long and big from the tips.
It's just a really solid test of golf and if you have not played it you need to. It's that good.
Lone Tree Golf Club & Hotel
Played On 07/23/2015Excellent Greens, great layout, insane rough
Lone Tree is a Denver area legend and has the most mature rough you will ever play out of. It's not long but it's so thick that you'd think it was a foot deep. It's one of the toughest most unassuming looking courses in the State and will eat your lunch if you are not on your game.
Excellent hotel, great staff, great food, great bar, great practice area, great location, etc. Not much not to like about Lone Tree. Go check it out if you have not already.
Plays medium long from the tips and the premium is on accuracy off of the tee but rest assured it will test your long game plenty so be ready to putt defensively if you are hitting in from 180 or more as staying below the hole is just tough to do and being above it is terrifying due to the fast greens. I love the place.
Tidewater Golf Club
Played On 07/17/2015Best in the immediate area without question
Outstanding in every regard. Great conditions, true greens, friendly staff, big landing areas off of the tee, excellent food & beverage, solid practice tee, great views with 4 holes on the intracoastal waterway, updated carts with GPS, etc.
There is no downside in this golf complex at all. Plays long from the blues/blacks and fairly long from the white tees as well. Lots of tee options for players of varying skills and length.
You'll hit every club in your bag. Course conditions were outstanding; zero complaints.
Go play tidewater, this track will test you without question and however much of it you think you want to bite off. Enjoy your round there.
River Run Golf & Country Club
Played On 07/11/2015PGA Tour comes here for a reason
It's spectacular, tough, big, long, and has some of the purest yet mean greens in the State of NC.
If you can get access with a member go play it it's phenomenal.
Play it from the tips and you'd better average 290+ off the tee or you're in for a long day as long irons and hybrids in to those greens is BRUTAL. They are fast and they are pure.
Excellent practice facility, great pro shop, good grille room, beautiful locker room, great location, etc. Hard not to like the "Run" so go play it if you can.
Red Bridge Golf and Country Club
Played On 07/11/2015Worth the drive out, great greens
Excellent greens were the highlight of the course which I put up there pretty high since that's where we take most of our shots as players. These were terrific and although recently verticut in very good shape and quick.
A course you need to see twice to get the sight lines on tee shots best understood.
Fairways were fast which produced longer net yardage on tee shots which was a welcome change to balls that don't roll out due to courses over watering to combat the heat. Played like a firm links style track but with really good turf which opened up the ground game and made for some fun shot making opportunities.
Club house staff was great; very friendly. Price was excellent for what you get. The winery on the #1 hole is pretty neat, the wine slushy (peach) is a pretty good hot day beverage and a good use of $5. Go play it.
Skybrook Golf Club
Played On 07/04/2015Won't go back
Cart staff attitudes, a less than ideal practice tee, very slow greens, lots of winter kill, and significant elevation changes made this a less than favorable place for us to want to visit again. Will not be returning.
North Stone Club
Played On 06/12/2015Former member, still like the place
Used to live there and played there regularly then moved on to the nearby lake and play out of another club now for convenience. Get the chance to play there with some friends every now and then and I still very much like the course.
Great greens, wide zoysia fairways, level tee boxes, and winds through a neighborhood that does not intrude on the course at all.
Practice tee is sub par in that you hit uphill which I never liked but it is what it is with the land that they have so it could be worse.
It's an entry level CC that offers a solid test of golf and is usually in really good shape so if you get the chance to play it; do. It's a fun track and PB Dye borrows from his big brother Pete with railroad ties and other hazzard borders, etc. Par 5's are gettable and the Par 3's are all very solid. 18 is a bruiser and you'd better pipe one there or you're going to have a brutal second shot. Fun layout. Staff could use a little help however; not the most accommodating group as of late.
The 500 Club
Played On 06/02/2015Fox Den renamed to Larkin Golf Club, it's still a cow pasture
That should have remained farm land. There's not enough grass or decent turf below what will grow to enjoy a round of golf until you reach the back 9 hole 12 and beyond when you finally get some grass growing.
The course is so hilly and exposed that grass can't grow naturally and the maintenance budget does not seem to be there to grow it by force. The front 9 is so hilly that it's just not fun to play even if it had grass I'd suspect it'd be equally not interesting.
It's just another representation of why public golf in the North Charlotte area is so poor. There is not a quality public accessible golf facility short of Rock Barn that is not fully private North of Charlotte. The rest are no better than this one which is simply not good.
Birkdale Golf Club
Played On 05/28/2015Gets worse each year sadly
This used to be a great course but it got bought and the group running it is not doing it any favors in terms of investing in it and keeping it up.
Limited flight golf balls on the range are a starter for not being impressed, 5-6 hour rounds are the norm, it's expensive, and the place gets HAMMERED with golf rounds which means the turf is so so at best as are the greens...
Sorry to say that I'm not a fan and doubt I'll be back. Shame, it used to be a really good Arnold Palmer design but like all things it needs to be kept up in order to remain good and relevant and Birkdale is not what it once was.
Cedarbrook Country Club
Played On 05/16/2015Excellent and worth the drive
Great facility. Great staff. Superb greens. Over seeded in the winter which is spectacular. No winter kill. Tee boxes and fairways in great shape. Great pace of play. You'll use every club in the bag. Head pro Zim and his staff are first class. Go see em. Can't say enough about how much I like the place. I play the tips and it gives me a good test and my wife or a beginner can play forward and it's totally enjoyable for them. Food is great also.
The Peninsula Club
Played On 05/15/2015Just not memorable
It's a typical "old boy" CC oriented toward white tee member golf with very little trouble and very benign greens. Good place to go feel good about your golf game. I ran off 5 birdies in a row from the tips and I'm a 6 which never happens so that ought to tell you something about how benign it is...
Big, wide open, flat greens, and not much to remember other than a few nice views of Lake Norman and playing over it and around it on a few holes. Practice tee is nice and the turf is in good shape as it does not get a ton of play.
You may see a few celebrities there as there are some GIANT homes on the lake and the course that are occupied by some local sports celebs and so on.
If you want a tough CC up in the area to play, go see River Run. The PGA Tour goes there for a reason; it'll eat your lunch.
Pinecrest Golf Club
Played On 12/14/2014Not memorable
I hate being critical but I am when I have to be. This place has a great look to it when you drive up but when you set foot on the turf you notice an absence of grass and that persists throughout the entire golf course property.
Practice facility is massive which is great. Chpping/pitching areas, putting greens, massive practice tee with ample targets. Practice balls are rough and the lack of turf made it a disappointment.
Golf course was average in terms of layout. I played the tips and did not find it special in any way in fact it was less than due the the lack of grass in the fairways and on the greens.
Greens were not true due to lack of grass density but were firm and very wet/damp yet it had not rained in days. Guessing they are trying to grow some grass?
Course is young for sure so maybe after a few more years of overseeding it will fill in with the right maintenance touch;hope so.
Homes are stacked on top of each other and then set too close to the course for my liking. There are too many other good tracks to play where you are not 15 yards from dogs barking, kids playing, and yes, even a chicken coop on one of the par 4's. Some might find that enjoyable, I don't so it was a "less than" experience for me any my playing partner.
Doubt I'll be back.
Length was average, difficulty average, they stretch the par 3's as most poor designs do to get it over 7000 yards which I find to also be "less than".
Bunkers were in good shape. Cart paths are cut in very close and located in high % landing areas for the slightest of mishit shots so plan on some lost balls due to them squeezing everything in so tight.
Hello, thanks so much for your review. We're so glad you enjoyed your round at The Amelia River Club. That's what we like to hear! We hope to see you again soon!
