CFB Borden Golf Club - Circled Pine
Played On 05/01/2018Early spring conditions but still enjoyable
Played yesterday on what MAY have been the first day the course was open for play. As such, certain aspects weren’t quite “ready for prime time” but in fairness, the same likely can be said for every other course in the area — greens were still recovering from aerating (close, but not quite); a few soggy areas on the course; no garbage cans or ball washers; a couple bunkers missing rakes. Overall, though, an enjoyable round on a course I like and am familiar with.
Legends Golf Resort - Parkland Course
Played On 04/09/2018Our fave at the main Legends complex
Our buddies trip to MB includes rounds at 4 of the Legends courses (we don’t play Oyster Bay anymore) every year, and of the 3 courses at the main complex, Parkland is by far our favourite. This year the first group teed off at 1:00 in the cold and light rain. Thankfully, the rain stopped after about 4 or 5 holes so we ended up having a great day. Since the weather likely kept many off the courses, our group (16) had a great round — nobody slowing us down. As is always the case with Parkland, conditions were fantastic. But this year, winter kill has hit the greens of many, many courses in MB and the 3 courses at the main Legends complex were no exception. The consensus of the group was that Parkland suffered the least damage of the three but make no mistake — LOTS of winter kill on the greens.
TPC Myrtle Beach
Played On 04/08/2018Once again, the best course in our rotation
Just returned from our annual buddies trip to Myrtle Beach. We’ve had TPC as a regular course in our week-long trip for 3 or 4 years now, and each year it is EASILY the best conditioned and most liked of the courses we play, with Heritage Club a close second. This year, we played 6 other courses that had varying degrees of winter kill on their greens — some, just a bit; others were horrible. They’d all had what appeared to be hydro seed applied and rolled flat. We can’t fault the courses for what Mother Nature throws at them but it does beg the question: how did TPC keep their greens in such extraordinarily great shape? Though we froze on the day we played TPC (3C / 37F), everyone to a man (16 of us) raved about all aspects of the course — had it not been so freakin cold, and cart path only, we definitely would have played another 18. In fact, the course had drained SO well from the previous rain that most of us felt we could have taken the carts on the course. It goes without saying that the bunkers were a little muddy, but that was expected. Even then, they still weren’t as bad as other courses’ bunkers. And since it was SO FREAKIN COLD, there was almost nobody else on the course, relative to what it’s normally like. Once again, TPC MB set the standard for course conditions.
Wild Wing Plantation - Avocet Course
Played On 04/05/2018Enjoyed it again..........except for the greens
We played WW last year when it was SOAKED (cart path only) but we still enjoyed the layout and relative conditions enough to try it again this year. While the course was drier this time (we could freewheel with the carts), the greens unfortunately had been hit with significant winter kill, just like all the other courses we played (except TPC). Still enjoyed the layout and the conditions tee to green were great. But those greens — ugh. At least the staff were excellent again, and the clubhouse food was great, if not a little slow.

Played On 04/04/2018Nothing special
This was our practice round for our recent buddies trip. I’d sum it up as “meh.” Layout was alright, mostly tree-lined. Conditions were okay tee to green, but once on the greens there was considerable winter kill, which turned out to be the case with all but one of the courses we played (TPC). Clubhouse seemed “worn out” — nothing REALLY bad, just kinda tired. Biggest “negative” for me was the cost — $65 was too much for the quality of everything. Yes, hot dogs/chips/beers came included but it was still too much money IMO.
Silver Brooke Golf Club
Played On 09/22/2017Great condition
Once again this course didn't disappoint. A 3 1/2 hour round, beautiful greens, and great staff is an excellent combination. The only miss-hit this time was that a couple of the tees were a little shaggy -- grass was almost as long as the rough. But only a couple, so I still love the place.

Played On 08/30/2017First time wasn't a fluke
Second time playing this course and loved it again. Sure, the greens were aerated and top dressed but I knew that going in, so no big deal. Played via a GolfNow deal @ $34 including cart -- can't beat that. Played alone and course wasn't crowded -- a 3 hour round. No traffic on the front but played behind a threesome for the back, and I preferred playing on my own -- my first round of golf since my back surgery 2 months ago, so I was happy to take my time and hit multiple balls here and there.
Yes, holes 2 and 3 are consecutive par 3s -- a bit odd but who cares. And they still need more ball washers -- many more.
It's a great track and when they're not aerated/top-dressed, the greens are fantastic.

Played On 06/22/2017An outstanding surprise
This course is a real hidden gem. We thought the course conditions were great, especially the greens - fantastic! The only "gripes" we could make are: more ball washers please (I think we saw only 3); smoother cart paths (but in fairness, all the rain undoubtedly makes it difficult to maintain them).
As others have said, the course has 2 distinct nines -- the front is a parkland, tree lined setting, while the back is a heathland setting, with mucho fescue. On the front 9, holes 2 & 3 (or was it 3 & 4?) are consecutive par 3s -- that's a little weird, but oh well.
We REALLY enjoyed this place, and as others have mentioned, the staff are stupendous. We will be going back without a doubt.
Batteaux Creek Golf Club
Played On 04/26/2017Great course
Disclaimer: only played front 9 due to wind.
I'd been told by a couple people that this was one of the best courses in the area, yet it still took me about 3 years to finally play it -- got a hot deal on GolfNow.
I really, really enjoyed this course. Sure, the greens have some moles and acne; and the greens are still filling in from the earlier aeration; and there's a LITTLE bit of winterkill here and there on a couple fairways -- show me ANY course in the area that doesn't. But let's be realistic -- it's still very early in the season here. I can see what this course will be once it fills in a little bit, and it will be phenomenal. Notwithstanding the early green conditions, they putted well if not quite as fast as I'd like or expected. The layout is fantastic -- I didn't see any "trick" holes or unfair design elements, and the entire course is walkable. Drainage appears to be fantastic -- I played on a much hillier course a few days ago and it was much, much wetter.
Others have commented that the clubhouse is lacking. While it certainly isn't going to win any awards, it offers almost everything the average player could want -- a decently stocked pro shop, and a place to get a quick snack & beverage. About the only "complaint" I'd have relates to the lack of a locker room -- it would be nice to have a place to get changed, if necessary (note: there may in fact be locker rooms; I didn't see any, but I may not have looked around enough).
About the only other thing I'd comment on is the lack of any picture of the hole on the tee boxes. This isn't a big deal, though, as long as you have the course guide book -- gives you all the imagery and various yardages that you could need.
Yup, loved the course, friendly staff. Will definitely be playing this one regularly.
Duntroon Highlands Golf Club
Played On 04/22/2017Pretty good for so early in the season
Was told by a couple friends that this was a course I'd enjoy. For the most part, they were right. To be fair, this was their "spring open house" -- free green fees, just pay for your cart ($18 p.p.). Pace of play was a little repeat little slow, but not surprising -- courses around here have only recently opened, so people are still shaking the rust off their swings. Also, the course was really soggy on a lot of the fairways, and even a couple of the greens, so there was no end of plugged and/or plugged and lost tee shots in our group. We had quite a bit of rain the days leading up to golf day, but the course was in as good a shape as could reasonably be expected. Though it was maybe too wet for power carts generally, I for one was glad for the cart -- this is a VERY hilly course, built along the escarpment; I could never walk it. Greens were good for early in the season, and most of the greens are quite elevated from the fairway -- #17 in particular was brutal as a LONG par 4 into the wind and into a very elevated, two-tiered green. All in all, it was an enjoyable course. I'm looking forward to playing it again later in the season and hopefully warmer and less wind.
TPC Myrtle Beach
Played On 04/01/2017Even better than last time
Our buddies trip just played TPC MB for the third year in a row. I didn't think the course could be in any better condition than it was last year, but I was wrong. Quite simply, the course was in phenomenal condition, with lightning fast greens. According to a couple of the staff, the new Chinese owners doubled the maintenance budget, and wow. Again, staff was fantastic. My only nit-picking complaint is for the hot dogs at the clubhouse -- a cold bun, with cold cheese, is just wrong. I'll give them points for consistency -- it was the same last year. According to others in our group, the other food choices in the clubhouse are quite good.
Wild Wing Plantation - Avocet Course
Played On 03/31/2017Seemed like a good course
Our buddies trip of 11 played here last month. Unfortunately, some wicked storms passed through the night before and the morning of our scheduled round, so we delayed our tee times until around noon. Given the amount of rain, it wasn't a surprise that we were limited to cart path only. What was a surprise tho was the great condition of the course, given the downpour. Yes, it was wet and yes the bunkers were mud, but taken in context, the course really was in great shape. It was our first time playing here but we all agreed we enjoyed it enough that we'd like to give it another try next year -- hopefully it'll be a little drier and the gale force winds will be a little lighter.
Oyster Bay Golf Links
Played On 04/04/20164th time ........ and last time
Just returned from our 4th annual buddies trip, and the 4th time playing Oyster Bay. Each year, it has ranked near or at the bottom of the ratings and this year it again came in last place. From the hardpan first cut of rough, to the seemingly "invented" tee boxes, or the hit & miss greens and patchy fairways, it was painfully clear this course desperately needs to increase its maintenance budget. It appeared very little pride and/or care was taken in many cases -- some white tee boxes seemed to be nothing more than an early patch of fairway mowed a little more closely (albeit poorly). We won't play this course again.
TPC Myrtle Beach
Played On 04/03/2016As good as I'd been told
Our buddies golf trip (12 of us) just played here last week. A couple of our group had played here last year and told me it was spectacular -- they were right. Everything about the place was superb -- course conditions, the staff, practice facilities -- it was all top notch. The greens were the best we played all week. If I had to nit-pick, about the only thing I can think of is that I wish the hot dog I had after the round had a heated/toasted bun -- that's it. In every respect, an outstanding day at an outstanding facility run by a superb staff. Our trip is an annual affair, and TPC Myrtle will be a "must play" on each trip.
Grande Dunes Members Club
Played On 03/26/2015Never again
I played this course as part of our package during a buddies trip in March/April 2014 (the computer wouldn't let me select that far back as the date). We played all 5 Legends courses, plus this course as our "add-on" course for our 6th round. Unfortunately, the weather was terrible the day we played -- brutally cold. But more unfortunately, the staff at the course were among the most rude staff we have ever encountered in our annual trips to MB (2013, 2014, 2015, and this coming March/April 2016). The pace of play was fantastic, only because I think we were among a very small group of people actually golfing that day (it was that cold) -- the course was relatively empty. I don't recall anything in particular about the course itself (ie. conditions, layout), so that tells me it was neither terrible nor fantastic -- that translates into "average" for me. But what did stand out above everything else was the unacceptable staff. I'll give credit where credit is due -- the young woman working the beverage cart was great -- very pleasant and she was shrewd -- she brought hot chocolate instead of beer/pop! But even she couldn't make up for her ignorant colleagues. Down to a man, we all said we'd never again spend our money at this course.

Played On 07/03/2014Just Superb
I just played this course about a week ago. Having grown up in Ontario and played all over Southern Ontario, as well as Myrtle Beach over the 30+ years I've been golfing, I can honestly say this course ranks in at least the top 10 I've EVER played; maybe the top 5 -- ANYWHERE. From the pool-table quality of the tee boxes (all 6 of them), to the fast, true greens and the generally outstanding course condition, this course was top-tier in every respect. The classy yet understated clubhouse, and the very friendly staff just added to the overall experience. I was fortunate to have been invited to play this course for a charity tournament, so play was a little slow -- though it was a scramble, a few "golfers" of questionable ability caused some significant delays. Once we passed them at the turn, though, play was very fast and we made up the lost time. Would I play it again? In a heartbeat. Would I pay the $5000 initiation fee and the $5000 annual dues to be a member? If I could afford it, also in a heartbeat -- yes, it was that good.
The Heritage Club
Played On 04/03/2014My fave on our Myrtle Beach trip
This course has proven to be the runaway favorite with our entire group. Always excellent condition, very friendly staff, and just overall superbly run. Many might think that, as part of the Legends group, it is lacking in some ways, but we find quite the opposite -- it seems to have what some of the other Legends courses are lacking. Each trip, we've played 36 holes here (back-to-back 18s on a day) and look forward to it as the highlight each year.
Hey! Just a heads up, you should put this review on CFB Borden - Circled Pine. Anderson was shut down two years ago.
