Poppy Hills Golf Course
Played On 04/10/2017Augusta like experience.
This course has finally matured after the renovation and it is a gem. Extremely difficult greens, fast & hard. There are many false fronts, hazards and blind shots. Played on a Monday afternoon and the pace was a little slow as it was carts on paths only. You'll be well served by expecting slow play. Just count on 4 to 5 hours, probably over 5 on weekends. Use the waiting time to study your next shot, you'll need it. This course has many angles and hidden challenges but is a beautiful track. Frigging amazing! I'll walk it next time, especially if it's carts on path only.
Friars/Presidio at Riverwalk Golf Club
Played On 03/25/2017Great Layout
I love the look and layout of this course. I've traveled to San Diego a number of times and have always wanted to play this course. It's moderately difficult but very playable with virtually no gimmicky holes. Plenty of oglegs right and left, creek hazard running through it, and limited number of green side sand traps. I'm a 12 index and I easily relaxed with every shot. I played all three courses on two days and would definitely play here again. The down side is that the condition was less than ideal. The greens were great but some of the fairways were rough. The pace of play on Thursday AM was great, finished in 4 hours, Saturday morning was slow 5 hours.
Juniper Golf Club
Played On 10/20/2015Gorgeous day, challenging but forgiving course.
I am very happy that I chose this course for the one day I was in Bend and able to play. The layout rolls through old lava fields that have since grown over with low brush and juniper trees. You get maximum sun and expansive views, it's not a hill course in the pines. Fairways are wide and easy to read shot placement. Greens hold approach shots but breaks are difficult to read. Overall the course is very challenging yet very forgiving. Staff were very friendly and helpful.. This is a walkable course. I highly recommend this course and would happily play here again.
Desert Willow Golf Course
Played On 09/27/2014An executive course with the feel of a championship course.
It's hard to explain but this course played like an executive course but feels more like a championship course. Overall condition wasn't pristine but was exceptional for the price. I would definately play here again. Nice quick round on a great layout.
Laguna Seca Golf Club
Played On 7/4/2013Great layout, lousy sand/dirt in traps, too much kukuyu grass.
I love this course layout, lots of oak trees, just enough hills. Many of the holes are not bordered by another hole. It is walkable but is fairly long and there are a few hills adding to the challenge. It's a good workout. Greens were in good shape, but inconsistent. Some were slow/easy, some hard and faster.
My biggest gripe is the so called "sand" traps. They are basically just dirt. There's been no rain for weeks, but the traps stayed wet for the entire round, finishing at 2:00PM. They were like hard mud. I won't play here again until they actually put real sand in them.
The Kukuyu grass has taken over large amounts of the fairways and roughs. I hate that stuff.
They have a good practice facility but the chipping greens are not very well maintained. Tee box for the driving range is grass and kept in good shape.
I recommend playing this course but just be prepared for a few disappointments regarding the traps, greens, and kukuyu.
