Poston Butte Golf Club
Played On 10/16/2020Nice course in the middle of nowhere
I like this course. Too bad its about an hour from chandler. Course had just opened up a=father over seeding, so it was cart paths only. Price was reasonable and fairways were in good shape, although as typical for so soon after overseeing, very wet early in the AM when i played. Greens had been verti-cut and were a bit slow also, coming out of over seeding. Still a really good course, an excellent value and a great time.
Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club
Played On 10/08/2020Great place - strange policies
The course is great and the staff were good too. As a single I walked if i could have my own cart - $25 fee for my own cart, so i chose to walk. It’s not as flat as it looks. Lots of up and down hill on each hole and from green to tee. I was beat. The greens are difficult and i never figured out how to tell if the flag was front, middle or back. It didn’t appear to simply be a rotation.
Back to the course, interesting holes, good condition, challenging. Nothing not to like, except local knowledge is necessary on several holes.
I like playing here and will return.
Stripe Show Golf Club
Played On 10/06/2020Short non-description par 3 course
The good: Course is a good place to practice short iron shots. Lots of trees. Easy walk
The not so good: course condition is poor. Tees and “fairways” (remember its a par 3) are basically not maintained. Greens aren’t too bad, but are slow. I was disappointed overall. To me it looks like they are sitting on the land waiting for the right price to sell, and in the meantime they have a very short (1500yards from the back tees) par 3 course.
I go in some good short iron practice and had a nice walk.
South at Boulders Golf Club & Resort
Played On 09/01/2020A favorite of mine
I have loved playing the boulders for a long time. Unfortunately it’s way too pricey for me in the winter months, so i only play here in the summer. It’s always in good condition and pleasurable.
Ken McDonald Golf Course
Played On 11/08/2019Good everyday course
A nice course with some challenging holes. Easy to walk, which was good because it is just out of overseed and was cart path only. Greens are normally quite good, but we’re a bit shaggy today. Fairways were in pretty good shape for just coming out of overseed. Gaff here is friendly and we finished in less than 4 hours, which is very good for cart path only restrictions.
The Stadium Course at PGA WEST
Played On 11/02/2019My favorite course in the valley
I love this place. Course was just out of overseeing, so fairways and greens were longer than normal, but shot values were still the same. Just a challenging course, with lots of interesting holes. Beware of the water.
Ventana Canyon - Canyon Course
Played On 10/19/2019A favorite course
One of my favorite courses. Pretty much every hole is interesting, and a few are spectacular. Greens are normally fast and difficult to read (at least for me). You need to stay below the hole on most holes. Enjoy the round and scenery.
PGA WEST Greg Norman Course
Played On 10/09/2019Not the best of the PGA West Courses
Ive played all the PGA West public courses, and both the affiliated La Quinta courses and this is amongst the least interesting. I would personally rate it only above the La Quinta Dunes course out of the 5 courses (My personal ratings order: Stadium Course, La Quinta Mountain, Nicklaus Tournament, Norman, La Quinta Dunes). As such, for the same money, i would go elsewhere.
Having gotten that off my chest, let me say, its a typical condo lined course. Lots of “waste” areas and a. Good variety of short par 4s, long par 4s, short par 5s, long par 5s,, short par 3s and longer par 3s. The fairways were in good shape and all but the 1st and 10th greens were good (I dont know what’s going on with those but they are in bad shape).
If you can get on Stadium or La Quinta Mountain for the same money, I would go there first.
PGA WEST Pete Dye Mountain Course
Played On 10/08/2019Some interesting holes
Many of the holes on the mountain course are very interesting. Some run right up next to the mountains and a few have water. Second hole is typical Pete Dye par 3, watch out for the water left, it’s definitely in play. 16 is a beautiful downhill par 3. Hit the green or... I recommend you climb the stair to the back tees, even if it’s just to take a look.
Greens are very small and have a lot of slope/undulation. If you get the slope wrong you will likely 3 putt.
10 and 11 are kind of cannula holes through the townhomes, but aside from those, they are all fun.
Valley at Marriott's Desert Springs Resort
Played On 10/07/2019Excellent Course
I have been playing here for about 25 years. I love both of the courses at the marriott. Both are challenging, and have some memorable holes, but aren’t backbreaking. Most approach shots on the valley are uphill and play longe Ethan the yardage. Service here is excellent, and normally the pace of play is also excellent. Holes 5-8 have lots of water as do holes 14, 16 and 18. Fun place to play.
Ken McDonald Golf Course
Played On 05/25/2019Good municipal course, excellent value
For seniors, walking this is an excellent deal. $24 on a weekend! Seriously. For an extra $3 you can get breakfast or lunch or 2 domestic draft beers. I didn’t do that, but the guys I played with did, and their lunches looked really good.
Course has some nice holes, many trees and the greens roll very well. I haven’t found a better vs,use in the valley.
The Stadium Course at PGA WEST
Played On 04/17/2019Every hole is different
Every hole is different and a challenge. You need to decided on a plan for each hole and then execute your plan. Any errant shots will be penalized, either by find water, or by making the next shot much harder. Just a really fun place to play. The finishing hole, 15-18 are fairly unique. The deep bunker left of 16 green is interesting, if your not in it. The sand most around 12 can be a challenge to negotiate too.
Worth experiencing, just don’t expect to have a great score.
The Stadium Course at PGA WEST
Played On 04/15/2019Got to play at least once in your life
This is a unique course. On most holes you need to hit the ball very exactly lots of water, sand and elevation changes. Hole 5, called double trouble, gives you two chances to hit it in the water, one on the left and the other on the right. All the par 3s are interesting, with the iconic 17th, not nearly as hard as the 6th. The bunker left of the 16th should be experienced, as it’s unique, but so is the bunker on 12, which is a moat of sand around the green. Just unique and fun, but expect to make some bad scores on at least a few holes.
Ventana Canyon - Canyon Course
Played On 04/14/2019Fantastic greens
This is one of my favorite courses. Great variety of holes, the conditions were fantastic. Greens were firm and fast. We never really adapted to the firm fast greens, but the ball rolled where we hit it. If you can get a hot deal make it at point to play the mountain course. Canyon course is good but I think less exceptional.
Play the back tees on number 4 (the most unique tee box I have ever played) and number 18 if you can stand the hike up to the black tee. Also recommend the blacks on number 3 but it’s so interesting it doesn’t really matter. Enjoy.
We appreciate you taking time to leave us a review, Corey. Thanks for the five stars! Be sure to book another round with us soon.
Faldo at Wildfire Golf Club at Desert Ridge Resort
Played On 03/31/2019Lots of bunkers
Some think the Faldo course is harder than the Palmer because of all the bunkers (108 I’m told). Some thing the Faldo xourse is easier because you can spray the ball and find it. My fried liked tha Faldo much more, as he only lost one ball. He lost about 1 per hole on the Palmer. If you spray, not to the Faldo course.
Both are excellent and in great condition. Facility is well run and staff is friendly. Good place to play, especially if you can get some kind of a deal.
Palmer Course at Wildfire Golf Club at Desert Ridge
Played On 03/30/2019Great conditions and staff
Course was in great shape. Greens were best rolling ones I have played in awhile. Pace of play was good, even though they were incredibly busy. Staff was great. Highly recommend, especially if you can get a deal. We played 36 and had a blast
Valley at Marriott's Desert Springs Resort
Played On 10/07/2019Nice resort course
Both courses at the JW Marriott Desert Springs are very nice. They are always in excellent condition and play is reasonably fast. Courses are challenging, with some memorable shots, but not too difficult. Most people like the palm course better, I’m guessing because of the last 4 holes in front of the resort. I like them both equally. The valley course has a string of excellent holes from 4-8 and again from 13-16. 18 on the valley is my favorite hole of the entire 36 hole complex, although it’s getting less so as I have lost about 50 yards over the 20-30 years I’ve been playing here.
Staff are always great and the price is reasonable for the desert.
Lake Powell National Golf Course
Played On 04/11/2019Great views and interesting holes
This is kind of a hidden gem. The layout is superior, with every hole brining an interesting challenge. Unfortunately, the course is not in the best of conditions, but...still worth playing for the scenery and variety of holes. I play every time I find myself in the lake powell area (which isn’t very often).
Lake Powell National Golf Course
Played On 04/11/2019Fantastic views and interesting holes
This course is a hidden gem of a layout. It has many interesting holes, and some great views of the mountains, bridge and lake Powell. It can be windy and the course is not in the best of conditions, but the rate was good so we played. This is my third time playing the course, and I still love it. We stop here to play every time we are in the area (which isn’t often because Page is I. The middle of nowhere). Bump your ball if you need to, but enjoy the views and the different holes.
Ken McDonald Golf Course
Played On 03/18/2019Good local course
Great place to get out and play everyday. Walker friendly and good senior rates. Course is in good condition, and a good deal for the cost. I try and get out and walk here when I’m in town.
Thanks for leaving us a review, Corey. We hope you'll come see us again soon!
