Mission Inn Resort & Club - El Campeon Course
Played On 03/08/2024Harder than I expected....
The course layout and conditions were great. There was more elevation change than I expected, and more break to the greens than I am used to. I'm not really one to complain however, I inquired about pin placement indicators (ie colored flags, secondary flag on the stick, etc.) and the starter tapped the GPS in my cart and said "use this and if you're on the green you'll have a birdie putt". Now, at the directional sign for the course the had a "pin position#2" sign but the scorecard didn't have pin positions on it, and the GPS didn't have pin positions on it. There was a zoom feature on the GPS for the greens which showed the slopes, but the pin was shown in the center of every one of them. Here's my dilemma...If the flag is on the front of the green I don't want to necessarily play a shot at the flag and miss short, so I'd like to know what club I can use to carry past the flag and stay on the green. The opposite is true if the flag is in the back. Also, since the green zoom feature shows the slopes (which are sever in some spots) you might want to adjust your aim or distance to accommodate the slopes. This came into play on quite a few holes and I found myself saying "well I wish I'd known that"...Sorry to fuss, but it was an issue and I didn't really appreciate the starter making me feel like I should be lucky just to hit the green. It was a little pretentious. I played the El Campeon course and I found it challenging but enjoyable.
Battlefield Golf Club at Centerville
Played On 05/05/2023Great value and decent pace of play for the number of golfers on the course
Played in just at 4 hours on a windy day. Not many trees on the course. greens were receptive but putted fairly quick. Appear to be Champion Bermuda. Fairway lies were tight, but the ground was soft enough to get the club under the ball. At $25 I'd play here ofter if I lived a little closer!
Kissimmee Bay Country Club
Played On 03/09/2023Challenging g, but fair
Enjoyable round. Nice folks in the clubhouse, starter, and in the grill. My only issue would be the bunkers. There are quite a few and many had not been raked so they were more like waste areas. You rarely found a rake next to fairway bunkers, so I played them as waste areas (ie you could ground your club and take a practice swing to get a feel for the texture). If the bunkers were raked regularly, air would be able to dry them out more readily.
Royal St. Cloud Golf Links - Red/White Course
Played On 03/06/2023Always a challenge but enjoyable!
I played here (Blue/Red) and enjoyed it, play was faster that time of year but the heat was stifling. March was much better weather while playing this time (Red/Blue), but the pace of play suffered. I would still come back due to the value of condition and layout. The carts we fast! Loved that!
Royal St. Cloud Golf Links - Red/White Course
Played On 07/20/2022Blue and Red
Blue’s greens had recovered from aeration. Generous layout.,great shape tee to green.
Red’s greens were about a week from recovery. Still manageable and still had speed. Red was a more challenging layout, with water and waste areas coming into play on most every hole. Hit the ball straight, score well..,
Eagle Creek Golf Club
Played On 07/18/2022Greens recovered quickly…
I got a notice from HN that the greens had been aerated and was pleased to discover that after only a week, they still pitted pretty well. The pro shop posts the pace of the greens each day. The day I played they were at an 8.7, so not speedy, but not slow either.
Nice wide fairways, a few St. Andrews style bunkers. Occasional water hazards but generally a great layout.
Shingle Creek Golf Club
Played On 07/15/2022No prior aerification notice.
The greens had been aerated but the rest of the course was great. Not the best reception from the bag boys and the guy at the end of our round didn’t clean our clubs, he just walked back and rattled them…lol. I would live to play it again when the greens have healed,
Hell's Point Golf Club
Played On 04/18/2014Great HOT Deal Course
I got a hot deal here and played 18 holes, riding, for $13. It's normally $30-$50 to play a around here. It's an interesting layout. The greens had been aerated a couple of weeks ago so they weren't rolling as fast as usual. It was still cart path only, which tells you how wet the fairways were. This course was basically built in a swamp do it takes a long time to dry out after a winter like we've had.
The Lamberts Point Golf Course
Played On 04/05/2014Interesting layout...out of the norm
I played this course in about 2-1/2 hours on a Saturday AM. This course is" out side of the box" in terms of layout. You have to think your way around it, but it's fun! I like that there are some blind shots and you have to use your imagination. It was fairly windy when I played, and since it's on the water and boasts the highest point in the City of Norfolk, that was an added element to have to deal with. The greens appear to have been aerated about 2 weeks prior to my round so there was still some top dressing on them which caused them to be a little slow, but they putted true to the break. I'll play again for sure. It's a nice change from the straight away par four dominated flat courses in the Tidewater area.
Cypress Point Country Club
Played On 03/22/2014Considering all other courses were soaking wet this one was just fine!
We'd had rain every other day for weeks and all other courses were like sponges, cart path only (might as well walk the course), sand traps like lakes, etc. Cypress was surprisingly dry, 90 degrees with the cart and the traps were actually in really good shape. Considering the time of year it was a fun round.
Kempsville Greens Golf Course
Played On 01/12/2014Very walkable Muni course
The day we played it was WET. Cart path only. I had originally booked it as a riding outing, but since it was path only they let us switch to walking with a rented pull cart. We stayed with, or waited for, the riding group ahead of us all day. Course has some interesting holes, and some straightforward holes so overall a nice mix.
