Ventana Canyon - Canyon Course
Played On 06/29/2018Ventana Mountain Course
Ventana continues to be one of best courses in the Tucson area. The layout is challenging and the grounds are superb. These greens are sometimes difficult to read but always a true roll...fast and no bumps. The lodge facilities (pro shop and restaurant) are very nice.
Puakea Golf Course
Played On 05/05/2017Tale of two courses
This 18 has dramatically different 9's. The front wanders through a residential area and is ok but nothing spectacular. The back is situated in the countryside and very nice, very scenic. Overall condition is very nice, particularly the greens...large and lush. The bunkers are typical volcanic red sand and thick but pretty well placed. All in all, a bargain and fun for a public course.
Kahili Golf Course
Played On 04/18/2017Kahili is a great choice on Maui
The course and facilities at Kahili are very nice without paying exorbitant fees. The staff was very accommodating and seemed to appreciate my business. I played during the afternoon, so the pace of play was quite good (3:30) despite moderate tradewinds. All in all, a great choice.
Ventana Canyon - Canyon Course
Played On 07/08/2015Ventana Mountain Course
The Mountain course continues to be one of my favorites. The layout is challenging and conditions are really good, particularly the greens. The maintenance folks are very proactive in repairing some of the over-seeding damage, including completely revamping a couple of tee boxes. The Staff overall are very helpful. Ventana's stay and play option makes any trip a pleasant experience.
Highlands at Dove Mountain
Played On 09/11/2014Highlands
The driving range was closed for reseeding and the course will close shortly too. Other practice facilities were open and in good shape. The course was very nice...fairways were lush and tight and the rough was dense for a southern Arizona course. The greens were also lush and very receptive. This is a difficult course to get on it the winter, but accessible during the summer and a good challenge.
El Conquistador Golf & Tennis - Canada Course
Played On 09/05/2014Conquistador - Canada
Canada had some issues earlier in the summer but is reasonably nice now. 17th green still needs some help. All in all, this is a fun course with lots of character and challenges.
MountainView Country Club
Played On 08/23/2014This course needs a certified superintendent.
Mountainview is in the worst condition that I have seen on any golf course. After the recent rains, the rough is lush but the greens are nearly dead. There are numerous bare spots on every green and the greens are not cut. They are shaggy, bumpy and will not roll true. I wonder if they know how to grow grass, use a roller, much less set the mower to cut at a descent length. Also, the only food available is after 18. There is not even a coke machine at the turn. This course is not worth playing at any price.
SaddleBrooke Ranch Golf Club
Played On 05/03/2014SB Ranch
The course was well maintained but the greens had not been cut on a Saturday morning...they were somewhat slow and a little shaggy. Fairways and tee boxes were in good shape. The practice/warmup facilities are ok, not great. The driving range could stand some help. The snack bar was well equipped and the sandwiches were tasty. Unfortunately, the Pro Shop closed at 2:00 and the staff was invisible for help.
Golf Club at Vistoso
Played On 11/26/2013This one-time jewel is on a comeback.
This was my first time on the course since late summer. The summer course conditions was sad and I was convinced that the course was not far from closing. However, having given it another try just before Thanksgiving was a pleasant surprise. Not only was the course in great shape, but I actually observed staff on the course working to make improvements. The staff greeted my group and checked on us during the round. The starter was precise is his directions. Several years ago, this was one of the best courses in Southern Arizona. I am not ready to state that it is once again at that level, but the turnaround from last summer is remarkable.
The Views Golf Club at Oro Valley
Played On 5/8/2013Well maintained course with interesting layout, great scenic views of the Catalina's.
The greens were just aerated on Monday May 6th, so it will take a few weeks to recover. The greens vary in size, difficulty, tiers and slope which adds to their interest nicely. Fairways are reasonably lush for this time of year. The layout is interesting with good use of the terrain (some very nice elevation changes, some elevated tees and greens). Although fun for all levels, a beginner might find it somewhat challenging.
I scheduled on a day in which they go off in two shotguns (am and pm) which worked well other than the Pro Shop was a little crowded to check in. The process was relatively quick and painless though. All in all, a nice outing and a good course for the cost.
