Quail Ridge Golf Club
Played On 06/25/2017Top notch course in Grand Rapids
If you like perfect greens, secluded holes, and a convenient location, you should check out Quail Ridge. This course is in my top 5 favorite courses, right up there with Pilgrims Run, Harbor Shores, and Stonegate. If you enjoy any of those courses and haven't played Quail Ridge, you're missing out!
It's hard for me to say anything negative about one of my favorite courses, but Quail does have one feature that I don't love. The first two par 5s are point and shoot golf. I don't want to complain too much, but when an architect forces you to play a par 5 as a three shot hole, it takes a little fun out of the game. I wouldn't mind if there was just one of those forced 3 shotters, but there are TWO!
Regardless of that, I love the course. The greens are phenomenal and the course is always maintained very well.
Cedar Chase Golf Club
Played On 10/06/2016One of the best value courses in Kent county.
Do yourself a favor and make the drive to Cedar Springs, MI to check out Cedar Chase. If you have open availability, check out their tee times one GolfNow.com and I'm sure you can find a GREAT Hot Deal. I've been spoiled on this course because it should easily be priced around $50-60 on the weekends, but the golfnow prices are always $30 or under.
As far as the course goes, it's kind of like an "up North" course was moved down to the greater Grand Rapids area. I will say, I've never played a course that has such a distinguishable difference in difficulty from the front 9 to the back 9. The back 9 could be the hardest 9 holes in Michigan. Tree lined fairways and nice elevation changes make this a great course to play.
Good luck and have fun!
Hawk's Eye at Shanty Creek
Played On 07/20/2016A "must see" course in Northern Michigan.
Hawk's eye is one of my favorite courses in Michigan. Every year, my golf league takes an up north golf trip and this is a course we always make sure to play!
The layout of this course is spectacular that is surrounded by beautiful scenery on every hole. Expect visually appealing, dramatic elevation changes that will test all of your skills. Once on the putting green, be careful not to three putt, because Hawk's eye's greens are perfectly maintained and lightning quick.
Check out Golfnow to see if Hawk's eye is offering any Hot Deals. Chances are, you can get a round of golf on a amazing course relatively cheaply.
Cedar Valley Golf Course
Played On 09/26/2015Quaint up North course
I did not dislike or love this course. I would compare it to Twin Birch in Kalkaska, Sauganash in Three Rivers, or possibly Saskatoon south of Grand Rapids.
I will definitely say, the back 9 is a little more scenic and feels more like an up North course than the front 9. The course actually requires some pretty good drives because a few of the holes are pretty tight. I couldn't get a good gauge about how nice the greens are because the front 9 was healing from being aerated. I would honestly say they would probably be subpar even if they weren't healing from aeration marks.
Check out the course if you're in the area if you can get it for $10 on golfnow like we did. FYI, you'll have to drive down a dirt road to get to the course.
Harbor Shores
Played On 09/07/2015This is a MUST PLAY course
In simple terms, this course is the best.
There's a reason why the Champions Tour will be playing a total of 4 Senior PGA Championships here.... This course is majestic! It does not have the beautiful views of an Arcadia Bluffs, but there are still some amazing views. Not only that, a majority of the holes are "WOW" holes (much unlike Forest Dunes).
The course is stunning and fun. You should make it a point to play here at least once a year, but for me, I'd rather play here as many times as I can. Yeah, Arcadia Bluffs is fun to play once a season, but Harbor Shores gives EVERYONE a chance to play because they're on GolfNow.com.
What an amazing course!
Forest Dunes Golf Club
Played On 06/17/2015Horribly Overrated
First of all (as stated by everyone else), Bring bug spray.
I think the most important thing that this course lacked was any kind of preview of what the hole looks like. This was missed in quite a few ways: Not having a GPS system on the carts like Arcadia, Harbor Shores, Thousand Oaks, and all great courses have. Not having a course layout on the scorecard to give some sort of idea of what's coming ahead. Not having a hole layout on some kind of tee marker. Or they could have just as easily have made elevated teeboxes so you can see the beauty of the course. I guess I'm saying, BUY A YARDAGE BOOK. Ya know... Because you haven't already spent enough at this course.
My honest opinion is that this course is highly overrated. There were no holes that "wowed" me. Just a nicely maintained course. Meh.
Brookside Golf Course
Played On 06/14/2015Pleasant course
This course is fairly easy, and probably good for beginners. I would suggest that beginners play the front 9 though. The back 9 is a little tighter with a few tough holes. The back also features some nice, interesting holes. If you wanna make a bunch of birdies and maybe an eagle, come out here!
The Medalist Golf Club
Played On 08/21/2014Beware of the challenge!
This course is a very nice course! Conditions are excellent! I saw on MGL that they listed hole #11 as one of the hardest 18 holes in Michigan. That being said, don't think that 11 is the only challenge on the course. My advice: Bring a bunch of golf balls if you're struggling off the tee. All of the tee shots are very demanding, and when the course gets firm and fast, don't be surprised to have a ball hit in the fairway and bounce all the way into the trees.
Bedford Valley Course at Gull Lake View Golf Club and Resort
Played On 08/21/2014Destination course
This course is very well maintained. There's a reason why I drive from Grand Rapids a few times a year to play it. This course, and all of the gull lake courses, is very fun and it gives you the feel of up North golf.
I retract this review. The course is nice, management is absolute garbage.
