The Reserve at Spanos Park
Played On 01/26/2020Slow Sunday afternoon round.
The good: Course in excellent condition. Only course around that has green fluffly grass fairways.
The bad: Slow pace of play on back nine made it a 6 hour round and didn't finish with several holes left.
Won't play again until 110 degree summer heat scares the walkers back to the morning.
Be prepared to hit stingers in the afternoon because the wind can be brutal.
CrossCreek Golf Club
Played On 07/17/2018Great Course for weekday fun
This is my second time playing Cross Creek and one of my favorites in the area. The layout is fantastic and it's secluded enough to make you feel as if your away from it all.
Arrived early for my tee time and warmed up on the practice range. Nice grass range with yardage markers. The course was in good condition. It's not overly long but many holes require precision ball placement. Some nice elevation changes make for a challenge to hit the green. The greens were excellent with true roll. Played on a weekday as a single. Pace of play was 3 hours. I will be back next time I'm in the area.
The only minor negatives were some fairways could use some seeding and a few bunkers on the front could use better sand.
Deer Ridge Golf Club
Played On 02/17/2018Needs Marshalls to speed up play
First time playing and unfortunately a below average experience. I might play again on a weekday but probably wouldn't recommend it on a weekend.
Let me start off with the positives. The course layout was great with a nice variety of layouts per hole. Most holes are on the shorter side with good scoring opportunities. The fairways were decent with a few dry spots.
The biggest problem was pace of play. Tee time around noon on a Saturday and starting tee had 3 groups in front of us. First hole went smoothly but second hole had to wait for two groups on the tee. It just snowballed from their with hole 3 backed up with 4 groups in front of us on the tee. It took over 1 1/2 hours to finish the first 3 holes. I was playing in a foursome and we had to wait an average of 10 minutes per shot all day. Overall the round took almost 7 hours to play. We normally play in 3 hours per round. The greens were ok and and on the faster side but bumpy at times. As others have said the bunkers need sand. This could be a great course with better course management and some minor repairs.
Merlot/Chardonnay at Poppy Ridge Golf Course
Played On 08/04/2017Fun Course
This course was fun and different from the flat valley courses which my group is used to playing. We started on Merlot and ended on Chardonnay on a Friday afternoon.
Speed - 4.5 hour round but we had 10 minute delays per hole on back nine.
Course Layout - Elevation changes and several blind shots made it a challenging course but was scoreable when hitting the targets. High handicaps should bring extra sleeve of balls. Course knowledge would be very useful on this course.
Course condition- Greens were average speed with a few bumps but rolled true most of the time. Fairways were ok but several areas with sparse grass. We had to play winter rules. Bunkers were excellent with deep sand.
I would play this course again but not at full morning price.
Seven Hills Golf Club
Played On 07/28/2015Nice layout but needs some work.
This course is a fair course and I would play again for the price of $10. Don't expect a country club course but it is a good practice course.
The good: price and the layout. I was worried it would be too narrow with the houses around but I hit most fairways which is rare.
The bad: greens and water on fairways. Some of the greens were in bad shape with dead spots on them. It's not due to the drought as some fairways had puddles of water and marshes in some spots. The second hole par 3 tee box had a tree branch hanging over it so the only shot is a low runner even though an 8 or 9 iron is all that's needed.
I'd play it again if the price is right for practice.
Elkhorn Country Club
Played On 09/15/2014Has a little of everything
This was my first time playing this course and I enjoyed it but it could have been better. Overall its a good challenge that I would play again. The greens are fast but there were some dead spots on them. The fairways were in decent shape. The fairways had trees and some were narrow. The course is very walkable and flat. The driving range is on the small side.
This was the first course I'm played in San Diego Countysince moving to Southern California in April. It is also by far the worst course I have ever played. The greens are infected and falling apart. Literally disintegrating under your feet. No sand in the bunkers and very poor Course Maintenance. I don't think I'll ever play here again unlessl they fix the course.
