Moorpark Country Club - The Canyon Crest Golf Course
Played On 08/21/2017You Might Regret it!
What?! 27 holes you say?!
Visiting from out of town I regret playing 18 at this golf wonderland because now I need to return to play the 9 holes I missed! I had the pleasure of playing Ridgeline and Canyon Crest on a peaceful Monday afternoon. The starter gave us the lowdown on the courses and tips for play. Clubhouse was great. Drinks and apps in the bar following our round were exceptional.
Plenty of elevation changes, scenery and forced carries for my target golf loving appetite. Ridgeline was the more rural of the 2 courses. Canyon meanders thru some residential zones but still very picturesque and enjoyable. Greens keepers know their craft out there with turf near perfect and bunkers well maintained.
My visit left me wanting More Moorpark! Soon to return!
Journey at Pechanga
Played On 08/20/2017My New Favorite Golf Course!
I enjoyed everything about this course, even the name Pechanga. Go ahead, you know you want to say it:
P-E-C-H-A-N-G-A!
I drove down from Nor Cal for some business in Temecula. My partner and I played the 1st twilight (1:30pm) on a Sunday afternoon and didn't encounter another player until a single passed thru on 13 and that was only because my partner doubled back to look for a couple of lost clubs.
Here's what you get:
- Every hole is completely different, running the gamut of forced carries, fabulous vistas and numerous elevation changes. - Fairways, greens and tee boxes were impeccable. Numerous great views above Temecula.
- One of the most beautiful water hazards I've ever hit across. It's a picturesque, babbling brook emptying into a large pond.
I had the pleasure of interacting with the pro shop, the starter, beverage cart girl as well as the food staff at the turn. Everyone was extremely nice and helpful to my partner and me. I had been running about 5 minutes late for my tee time and I was met in the parking lot by outside services who loaded my bags into the cart and transported them over to the 1st while I checked in. In addition to this greatness, staffers went out of their way to locate us on 16 to return my partner's clubs she had left behind. I still don't know how they did it being as it was quite late on a Sunday and we were the only ones out there!? Just part of the magic of Pechanga I suppose!
I previously read someone refer to one of the holes as gimmicky. Personally, I love the challenge of hitting off elevated tee boxes into distant fairways. I don't understand who wouldn't, but everyone has different tastes.
If you don't enjoy the challenge of target golf, I might suggest the more open expanse of Cross Creek which is 25 minutes or so to the north.
For a course that's as fun as it's name, get out and play P-E-C-H-A-N-G-A !!
Ranch Course at Genoa Lakes Golf Club
Played On 06/11/2017It's Not All Good........ It's All Amazing!
Everything about this course was exceptional for me and my group. We had an 11:15 GN on a Sunday. The forecast was a little iffy but since we were from out of town this course was a must do. We had some wind and a little hail but essentially didn't see a single player the entire round. Conditions seemed to change on every hole. But what stayed the same was the incredible views/vistas you get at each teebox. This is true for the front as well as back 9. (The front is relatively flat and the back ventures up the hillside).
The course is well maintained, the staff extra courteous. I would play this course again in a heartbeat and so should you!
The Ranch Golf Club
Played On 05/01/2017Good News and Bad News.
The bad news first. I played horribly today and lost a bunch of balls! But more importantly, check out these pictures. The Ranch is finally getting fresh sand into the bunkers! It's been a long time coming but it's really happening. Not all of the traps have been filled yet but a bunch are looking really good. Cheers to Ranch improvement! I didn't see any of the boar destruction I'd seen on my last time out. The course was aerated last week, so I'm predicting a nice summer for the course.
The Golf Club at Copper Valley
Played On 03/27/2017Only 1 Previous Review of Saddle Creek?!
I can only imagine that the reasoning behind this is that golfers don't want to give away the secret to what a fine resort and course are tucked away in a little town called Copperopolis! Well, I don't either so here goes.
Stay Away! I did the stay and play package and it was... "terrible". Got two rounds of 18, breakfast overlooking the 9th green (pictured) and a 1 night stay where the practice putting green was 5 feet from the back door of my well appointed bungalow (yuck!) The online price was unbelievable, so I called them to confirm it. Hint: Off season weekday for way under $200. Can I say it was $158? Well, I just did, so there! Don't take advantage of this! The course fairways and bunkers are well kept and in amazing condition. (If you are into that sort of thing... ) Most don't like that, so stay home! There are lots of sloping challenges, water hazards and course wildlife (pictured). Wild turkeys on a golf course? C'mon now! Couldn't concentrate on my shots for 3 holes after seeing this. All I could think about was pairing them up with gravy, mashed potatoes and cranberry sauce! Nearly ruined my game!
The staff were all warm and welcoming. Pro shop was super friendly, starter gave me tips for the course, restaurant had great food/view (pictured) and gave me the option of taking it to go. Heck, I was even given a smile and greeting from the greens keepers! With that attitude, how do they expect to keep this place running?! Oh and my golf cart was waiting for me at the front door for my morning round. Again, the nerve!
Seriously though the only negative, and the starter warned me of this: the rough is very rough. This may be due to the crazy rainy season this year and they haven't been able to give it a proper mowing? So I wound up losing a lot of balls. I have to admit though, I don't have much patience to look for lost balls, 30-45 seconds tops.
To reiterate, you shouldn't come and stay or play golf here. That way you won't regret not spending a lot of money, not playing a really top notch, well conditioned / challenging course and meeting the great staff out there off the beaten path. You're probably much better off doing a stay and play for $300 or $400 in Monterey or Palm Springs. Yeah, that's what you should do......

CrossCreek Golf Club
Played On 01/30/2017A Course I Would Recommend .......
GA asks if I would recommend this course to a friend. Well, I liked this course so much, I can say that I would even recommend it to an enemy!
The course is beautiful, well maintained and covers a large expanse of the "countryside" complete with vineyard views. Fairways, bunkers and greens were all near perfect condition.
I like to sample a lot of golf courses and usually don't return to a course unless it really wows me. After 9 holes of play I was already telling my wife we needed to plan our return to the area to play the course again!
Pace of play was a bit slow but it was a Sunday afternoon so it was understandable. Tried to get some food at the turn but they were closed for any cooked delights and had to settle for chips and a drink. Otherwise very enjoyable and a great GN deal!
Mt. Woodson Golf Club
Played On 01/30/2017Very Challenging
Narrow fairways. Forced carries. Great scenery and diversity of holes.
I found this course to be old tyme and a bit rundown. In spite of recent rains the fairways still had dead patches of grass and/or bare spots. The greens were really fast and took my ball away! Definitely worth checking out if you enjoy the target golf styled challenge.
Should have used my iron off the tee box more but I guess I'm a little stubborn and paid the price in lost balls.
Yocha Dehe Golf Club at Cache Creek Casino Resort
Played On 01/14/2017Lives up to all it's accolades!
It's everything it's purported to be.
*Loved the launch off the 1st tee. Wish there were more holes like this.
*Fairways, teeboxes, greens and bunkers are meticulous. Unfortunately, I tested the bunkers more than I'd like ;)
*Snack bar at 9.
*Beverage cart stopped in 3 times.
*Group in front of us had us waiting a bit and it was "cart path only" due to recent rains yet we STILL finished in 4.0 hrs.
*Nice restaurant, great food and bev selection.
*Every staff member we encountered was very gracious. Starter provided tips. Outside services cleaned my clubs when I came off 18. I never even clean my clubs! Now I can see what brand I've been playing! Woo hoo!
-My only very minor negative might be in course design. I personally, like to feel a bit lost on the back 9 as if I am away from things. Think Carmel Valley Ranch, San Juan Oaks, The Ranch SJ. Here you are pretty much in sight of the facilities throughout your round. But that's just me being particular. Don't let it stop you from getting out to play this course.
-Oh and I wish the hotel was more accessible. They cater more to the gambling crowds getting a room than the golfers. I think you might need a frequent players card (gambling) or something to stay but don't quote me on that. I would've loved to spend the night as I had a long drive to make home from there. Next time, I'll spend the night in nearby Woodland.
The Ranch Golf Club
Played On 11/02/2016Needs Help!
Fantastic course, layout and staff. However, as others have mentioned, the course conditions have taken a major nose dive. From what I can gather, boars are in and destroying parts of the course, in particular, parts of the rough are being torn up pretty badly. Most of the greens are in terrible condition. They look damaged from, I don't know, misfertilization? dancing boars? drought? I really have no idea. Now, the bunkers. There is no excuse for the state of the bunkers. They look terrible and they are not being looked after or cared for in any way shape or form. Maybe they are understaffed, again, I don't know the facts.
Just be aware of these items. If you pay full price you may feel you haven't gotten your moneys worth. Pace of play, pro shop/starter courtesy and restaurant were all A+. They told me that they are working with authorities on the go ahead to trap, shoot, fricassee or whatever you do with wild boar. In CA you can't step on a bug without a permit, so there you go. I hope they can get things back on track since it's such a fun course to play. The weakened state of things did take something away from the experience I had, unfortunately....
Waikoloa Village Golf Club
Played On 06/28/2016A fun and forgiving course
Played a relaxed weekday round here and got an amazing rate. Every staff member was super nice. (2 folks in the proshop, 2 cart staffers and 1 beverage cart) No complaints on the round at all. Some really fun dog legs and the 18th is really fun with a water jump at the end. Fairways are wide and forgiving. Greens were tough on me and my partners all day. Finally had to just disregard my reads and go straight for the pin.
Makalei Golf Club
Played On 06/25/2016Fantastic Value
This where the locals play. It's different than most courses on the island since it's quite hilly. They say it's 9 up and 9 down.
Really fun to play with challenging and signature holes. I'm not fond of shooting uphill but alas, it's one of golf's challenges, especially here. Afternoons are the best on your pocketbook. We had the course to ourselves on the 2 weekday afternoons we played and used the $23 nine hole deal. The staff is kind enough to let you fit in as many as you can before their appointed cart return time which is very nice.
Tip: Balls can be frequently lost in the thick brush that line the fairways so bring some extras.

Played On 02/20/2016Re-Review
This is a quick re-review to add some pictures. A fantastic and fun course in all respects.
POP, staff in the pro shop, challenge / forgiveness of the course and it's maintenance are all top notch. My only mild gripe would be the (senior) food server at 19. She can be a bit crabby, but, I've come to expect it and now I just see it as part of the establishment's overall charm!
A previous poster said that #10 and #15 should be imploded. I couldn't disagree more. Love the challenge of both. I'm not really a fan of the uphill drive at #9 but the extra nice staff at the #10 snack shack make it worthwhile!
If you haven't played LS, you owe it to yourself. Great course for a great price.

Wild Wings Golf Club
Played On 12/30/2015Green Greens
They tout their great greens here. I have to admit that they were good but the only thing on the course that is actually green. Nice diversity though 3/4/5's were a nice shuffle. I'd like to come back when the fairways have had some water and the water hazards have water. I bet that it's beautiful. Too bad they're being hit so hard by the drought. It is however really green up the road at the Cache Creek resort course. WW was still a great deal for what we paid, $11.
Carmel Valley Ranch Resort
Played On 08/30/2015Excellent!
Everything written about the friendly and excellent staff is true. Everyone is super down to earth. My 2nd time playing and it was thoroughly enjoyable. The superstar is the back 9. I played it twice last year when they aerated the front and I didn't realize how lucky I was! No disrespect to the front nine which is fine but he back is where it's at! Wish that the prices were a little more reasonable so I could play it more often. Pace of play was great and when there was a little trip up, the staff was all over it and everything smoothed out just fine. Check it out!
San Juan Oaks Golf Club
Played On 08/02/2014Beautiful, Well Kept Course !
I had been wanting to play this course for some time due to reviews I had read and it did not disappoint! Fairways, greens and teeboxes all in great shape and well maintained. The front and back 9 are quite different with the back being considerably more challenging. Can't wait to go back although it is a bit of a haul from the bay area to make it down there. Pace was brisk but relaxed. Teed of at 3p on a Saturday.
Brentwood Golf Club - Creekside/Hillside Course
Played On 05/29/2014Nice
Quiet and pleasant course. Pace of play was a bit slow for what I had hoped on a weekday but I was a quick single in a cart loaded up on caffeine! The course meanders thru a lot of Brentwood backyards. I prefer courses that are a little more rural but the course is well kept and has a good variety of terrain. Late morning weekday GN was a great deal!
Laguna Seca Golf Club
Played On 05/17/2014Beautiful and Challenging
The first 9 warm you up for a tougher back 9. This is a very scenic course in a quiet and picturesque location. The staff is very friendly and accommodating. I had been eying this course for a while and took advantage of it using my GN BOGO reward. Because of this I got a fabulous deal and would go back paying more for the course. The course has a great mix of par 3/4/5's. Plenty of bunkers on the back 9 to keep you on your toes and the 15th features 2 shots over the water hazard in order to get to the green. Fairways, tee boxes, traps and greens all very well maintained. Great mix of flats, ups and downs. Would recommend this course wholeheartedly.
Blackberry Farm Golf Course
Played On 02/17/2014Course in Good shape
Grass and greens are in good condition despite the ongoing drought. This is a very short, up and back 9 hole course. We played on a holiday and it was a bit backed up however, a local told me you can have the course to yourself on weekdays. Fun, quiet place to work on your short game. Good deals to be had at GN.
Pajaro Valley Golf Club
Played On 02/15/2014Greens pretty bumpy, slanted fairways
This is a fine course. I'm just not a fan of playing up and down hills and slanted fairways which there are many. The greens were quite jumpy. It's worth a try if you can bag a good deal on GN. There are lot's of long par 4's where you can work on your driver.
West at Rancho Canada Golf Club
Played On 01/14/2014Fantastic Courses Extreme Value
Both East and West courses are a delight. However, pace was extremely slow on this day (Tuesday) as one course was closed causing a back up on the other. The marshal mentioned to me that the closures happen frequently on Tuesdays. So check before you book. Phenomenal deal for the midday/midweek thru GN!
Thank you for your review and tip! We are glad you chose to play our course. Come back soon!
