A Better Municipal GC, all things considered

Played this course for the first time in four years. Not much has changed, and that was actually a good thing. White tees add up to 6300+ yards, and my belief that the back nine is more challenging than the front nine was vindicated. I have many well- liked and appreciated holes, but the last two, #'s 17 & 18 are phenomenal. #17 is a short 308 par 4 that most golfers would find themselves putting for a bird. Then, 18 presents a 414 yard par 4 that is a score bustering demagogue. The practice areas are phenomenal. You can spend an entire day at this course and not regret it..

Great Value

Bear Creek is a really nice, affordable, and fun to play links-style course to hone your golf skills. The groundskeepers have kept pace with the horrid weather this Summer as the tee boxes, fairways , aprons, and greens are in good shape.

The Definition of "Neglect."

The last time I played this course was on the Sping of 2020. At that time, just before the Covid 19 pandemic, Great Eagle was having something of a re-birth. The venerable course was getting watered, manicured, and spruced up. When a friend was visiting from out of State, I thought it would be appropriate to introduce him to this course. Boy, did it prove to be a mistake and an embarrassment. First, the first thing we saw was how bone dry the course was. The fairways had large patches of dirt, devoud of grass. The greens were anything but. Large patches of burnt out grass, not just yellowish, but just plain brown dirt were found. It was a "sick joke" that several holes we placed in the middle of these burnt patches. It was very apparent that this course's Owner and Management just "gave-up" after being ravaged by the heat of the previous month. As my friend said at the conclusion of our round, "This is a tired course."

Down in The Valley and Over The Mountains

What a unique experience for anyone. The front nine is not very different from most courses in The Valley that have their links meandering through a residential community. That being said, when one gets tp the 11th tee and then the 16th tee, the "ooohs and aahs" begin. The Back Nine, or "Mountain Course" is "Target Golf par excellence" with amazing vistas. The 18th hole is a tough "finishing hole" with an imposing water feature challenging any level of golfer. Johnson Ranch is well worth the time.

Getting to Really Like This Course

Hillcrest is perfect for an Intermediate Level golfer. Several par fours demand mastery of the fairway 3 & 5 woods to attain a GIR. Two of the Par 3’s (#’s 3& 17) likewise require mastery of fairway woods to reach the Greens. The sand traps have coarse, heavy sand that give a true challenge to exit onto “slick as ice” Greens ( don’t expect any forgiveness on an “over hit”). So, if your handicap is in the 12-14 range and you want to see if that holds true on a 6200+ Yard course, Hillcrest will be a great test. To quote Arnold, “Awl be bach.”

Raised Greens and unreal Stimp Meter reading

First time playing the Wigwam Blue course. Meticulously kept up, beautifully manicured fairways, strategically placed sand traps with soft white sand, and elevated greens that are as challenging as you’ll ever play (Personal compact Stimp Meter read as high as 13.3on several greens......it was a head shaking experience to watch “touch putts” travel 6-8 feet....but that was the challenge. The back nine was short (as advertised) but several of those ho.es were a delight to play, especially #15, the 98 yard Island. Wigwam Blue was a fun course to play and if you choose to try it, I am pretty sure that you will agree.

What was that Stimp Meter reading again?

Hillcrest offers the same golfing experiences one will find in other Sun City West courses. Very scenic, well manicured, delightful holes to play. And like the other Sun City West courses, it is imperative to place your ball on the green BELOW the hole, otherwise you will be inviting the dreaded 3 putt to be placed on your scorecard. But that’s just a tactical shot opinion. The course was a pleasure to play. I heartily recommend it and personally look forward to playing there again.

Thank you for the great review! We do have some large greens with lots of slope on them, which makes putting challenging at times. We appreciate you coming to play Hillcrest Golf Club, and hope to see you back in the future!

Hit the Beach!

First time playing the course since it was refurbished. The $6,000,000 was well spent. Loved the plethora of bunkers throughout which guard not only the greens, but the fairways. Their placements encourage accurate shots and a misguided one means a considerable challenge for the "recovery" shot. The greens were a bit slick, but that could have been due to the cold weather. Everything considered, it was a terrific experience.

Do not advance to the right

Due to a concrete water canal that extends the length of the golf course, if you have a slice, or fade, to the right, you will be constantly challenged to prevent fishing balls out of the stream. Almost all the holes have to be played to the left since the slope of the course bears to the right. The greens are in excellent shape and the location of the pins are challenging. Very few of the greens are flat so almost every lie will test your ability to deduce the correct arc and speed of the putt.

55 Years Old & Being Refurbished

Sun City North, upon first look, may be showing its age, but new ownership is attempting to revitalize this course originally constructed in 1960. The fairways are wide open and bonuses are given on the first, seventh and ninth holes [if you hit a shot into the newly renovated desert areas you get a free drop]. The only drawback to the course are the greens which are essentially concrete [figuratively, not literally]. I was told by a local player that steps are being taken to correct this situation [deep watering to promote root growth], but it will be at least a year before the greens "soften up." So, if your "green game" is hard-charging, expect a plethora of three putt attempts. Nevertheless, the course is challenging but does allow the Intermediate golfer, like myself, a good chance to break 90!

Beautiful Greens & Deadly Bermuda Grass

Great Eagle re-opened after a 5+ month semi-shutdown. The results of the work were evident on the greens, all of which, except for #10 were in pristine condition. The fairways were average, and the second cut Bermuda grass was unforgiving. Though there are few tree'd areas, the Bermuda grass forces the golfer to be accurate with their shots. The Bermuda grass is thick, making it both difficult to find errant ball and, if found, to effectivelyincrease the difficulty of an "escape" stroke. Though the course would never be confused with a top of the line offering, Grwat Eagle presents challenges to your game and not to your wallet.

Guarded by Sand & F 16's

Playing Falcon for the first time I was very surprised and pleased with the course. The front nine was challenging, the back nine less so. The fairways are generally wide and forgiving for slight draws and/or fades. The greens were indeed green for this time of year (Late June). The White distance is 6200+ yards meaning the mid-irons come into play quite a bit for the second shots on the par 4's. I would recommend this course for the intermediate golfer and, because of the value ($), will return to this facility.

Coldwater...Hot Time

What a wonderful golf course. You can play it long or short, but no matter which of the five options you choose, the course will be demanding. I chose to play the 6700+ option and found myself challenged to place second shot hybrids onto the green for the par fours. For late June, the course was in great shape. The GolfNow deal made it a great buy.

Keep it in the Fairway

The Cimarron course will give you fits if you do not keep the ball in the fairways. Almost all the holes have fairways which are bordered by undulating hills, desert scrub, and/or sand. Mix in a few water hazards and you have a date with a bloated golf score if you do not keep your shot in the fairway. The greens were beautifully maintained as was much of the course. Cimarron is worth both the trip and the effort to play.

Precision

Do not let the par 70 lull you into a false sense of security. This course is sneaky. Several holes have bunkers strategically placed to devor tee shots which fail to clear them. The bends of the fairways will punish any errant drive. The lone water hole (#5) devours any right-handed slice. The fairways and greens are meticulously groomed. The pins are placed in challenging positions. The sand traps are well maintained and should be avoided at all costs.the course challenges you to play long, but it is best if played short. AZT is well worth the time, effort, and money.

No deer, but plenty of Birdies

This is a terrific course if you desire a challenge to "Birdie the Course." Every hole beckons a solid tee shot followed by a surgical iron strike. The greens are large, the aprons meticulously groomed, and the pIn placement challenging. The sand traps were truly sand, not gravel and likewise beautifully groomed. While not a terribly long course, you will get a full extension of which ever club you use for your first two shots.
