Gleneagles Golf Course at McLaren Park
Played On 08/09/2020Friendly Staff, Brutal Course
Pros:
+Staff was awesome! Friendly service, good advice on the course layout, and very welcoming.
+ Was not crowded at all so pace of play was nice and we could take our time.
+Good physical workout going up so many hills against the wind and in sand,
Cons:
Fairways are a combo of sand, dirt, rocks, etc. You almost never have a clean lie unless on the fringe.
Pretty difficult course layout leads to lost balls or awkward shots throughout the day
SF winds + steep hills make for a fairly painful day of golf.
Yardage markers are not easy to spot or don't exist on some holes.
Overall, you can play 18 for under 50 bucks here which is great. BUT be prepared for a really rough course with ugly conditions throughout. Really appreciated the friendly staff but hated the course layout and conditions. It is what it is for this price though...
Coyote Creek Golf Club - The Tournament Course
Played On 7/18/2017Coyote Canyon - Tournament course
+ Booked a 4pm thursday tee time for 40 dollars.
+ Fairways and Greens in great shape
+Nice Carts equipped with GPS system
+Great views and challenging course
- I am a beginner and lost a ton of balls. Almost every hole had multiple hazards and change in elevation
-The wind has a major effect on club selection ,more than any other course I have played
-Did I mention its a difficult course? This is probably a positive for good players, but with the strong wind, up hill lies, water + ball eating rough, i had a long day.
Overall- tournament course is very nice albeit difficult. Ignore the nearby highway and you will have a good time. Solid value for 40 dollars.
The Ranch Golf Club
Played On 8/10/2013Super tough but fun
This course is extremely long and very difficult the entire way through. Every hole has rivines and thick brush on every side in addition to massive changes in elevation. Be sure to take extra balls!
You are forced to drive a cart and walk to your ball so you get a pretty good workout from goingup and down steep hills throughout the day.
The greens are always multi leveled and make for a very tough challenge if you dont hit near the flag on your approach.
You get great views of San Jose which makes up for the frustration you will probably have from losing 10 balls.
50 bucks on golf now is worth it because its very unique course in the area and a great challenge to just shoot under 90.
Santa Clara Golf & Tennis Club
Played On 8/4/2013Tough Greens + Bunkers, fun layout
-Almost every single hole on this course is a dogleg.
-A majority of the greens are surrounded by at least 2 bunkers
-The greens have tons of contours and breaks to read.
-A few elevation changes and difficult lies to navigate
Overall, I enjoyed the course and as a novice found it moderately challenging. Nothing compared to Coyote Creek or Cinnabar but still a good enough foe. The greens are in good shape and overall its a decent course.
55 dollars for 2pm on a sunday is decent i guess compared to other near by courses. But i would probably rather pay 30 for sunnyvale muni or a little more for the ranch.
3/5
Forest Creek Golf Club
Played On 11/5/2012Narrow Course with lots of trees - a good challenge
I played this course on a monday afternoon and sped through with one other player. I am a fairly novice golfer so found the tight fairways and change in slope to be pretty difficult. That being said, it did force me to be more thoughtful with my shots ( including putting away my driver on several par 4's and 5's ) . The course was in great shape minus a few greens that could use work. I enjoyed the day thoroughly and wish I would have kept more in play. Shot in the low 90's because the woods ate alot of my balls, but thats how life goes for a beginner sometimes! Good course would play again with friends of my own skill level.
