Fair and average muni

I would give a higher rating for this course if the greens had not been punched in the last few days. Sand had not been top dressed as well. Hopefully this will benefit them in about a month. I played here often as a teen in the 1970’s. Not much has changed except a few trees are taller. There are zero sand traps and it is very flat so can be fair for all handicaps.pace of play is improves when all three nines are in a rotation.

Relatively easy but fun course

There is some character to most of the holes here but fairways are wide and forgiving so scoring is fair. Spring will start soon and the conditions should be good. Hope they keep up the greens as poana is starting to grow and that can be a real problem. Overall good value and pace of play is good without any long waits.

A mainstay in the area

Bear creek with two 18 hole courses has been a stalwart for public golf in DFW for decades. The west course has seemed to be the preferred side and was first for a pretty major make over several years back. More recently the east has had the updating and it is now on par. From the fairway to the greens and the bunkers, it is in great shape. When spring of 2022 gets really rolling, both side should be stellar and a real test for every level of golfer. They added a new party patio as well but COVID will restrict its use until who know when.

On the upswing

Southern Oaks has had its ups and downs with ownership and course conditions but right now it appears straightened out and the future looks good. It has always been a great layout with some really challenging holes. Overall conditions are very good. My only wish is that they cut the greens a little tighter as they were a little hairy. They rolled good but more speed would make them great.

Great layout and smooth greens

Played here quite a few times and the layout is really good. The greens are smooth and challengingly fast. Very good value compared to other courses. Did not give 5 stars because the bunkers were not groomed in any way. If you get in one it makes sense to rake a spot and place your ball or play ground under repair.

Blend of old and new

History is here as the course has gone from something Ben Hogan would have played, through a military base course and a complete redesign to a challenging top level track. Course is in great shape and greens are fast and true. Can be a hard walk without a cart. No gps and no colored flags to identify pin positions are a few drawbacks but overall a fine course design and a good value.

Nice course in very good shape

Overall this is a very nice golf experience. Conditions are great, greens fast and true, fairways lush but trimmed and a great gps system. My only issue is the layout is a little tricked up with some huge drop offs and quirky hole shapes. But, that may be because you are after all, in the mountains. If it is your first time, it helps to have a local guide some of your club and strategy choices.

Simple design but nice

This is an older 1972 vintage country club that is primarily designed for senior golfers. There is very little trouble and no forced carries off the tees. There can be some tucked pins but most greens offer a run up alternative. The greens are in great shape and run fast and true although their firmness doesn’t hold so plan on some run out. Carts are great and gps is very accurate. All in all, this is a fine course but not a championship style or challenge.

Good medium quality and price choice

Nestled in a valley amount a major residential development del Lago in a pretty good layout with a good variety of hole design and challenges. The greens are firm but hold well and roll true. Some of the conditions are a little bare but they should not be in play if you hit the required shot. All in all a good choice for the area if you can get to the location which is a little southeast of town.

Good choice for mid range course

Golf in Hawaii for visitors is pretty expensive. The higher priced ones are that way because they are in fantastic shape and or are visually stunning. Waikoloa Village is just a step down from those. The layout is very good and provides every level of skill a chance to score. There are a few patchy spots in some fairways and the bunkers seem like gravel instead of sand. However the greens are pretty good and roll true. The staff is great, carts are peppy (no GPS though) and food cart service is regular. They charge for range but a small is only $3 and balls are in good shape. Overall a good round on a good course.

Great track for being in city

Despite being surrounded by housing Legacy doesn’t feel too much in the city. The layout and design is great and the conditions are superb. Great practice area, clubhouse and shop as well. Greens roll fast and true. Bunkering is perfectly placed to be challenging but avoidable with a good shot. Overall a very enjoyable experience for all handicaps. Nice that singles can get a cart without having to pay extra. Helps keep the game safe and sets a good example. Thanks Legacy.

Nice course and a good value

The Green Valley area is a stand alone residential and recreation area south of Tucson. This course is in the mid range in terms of quality and price. Course is in good shape right now and has a fun and challenging layout. The greens get a lot of play so there are lots of ball marks that don’t look too good visually but don’t really interfere with the roll that much. Please repair your own and one more! Small practice green but good driving range. Some elevation changes to add to the visual and strategy. Overall a nice round of golf.

Course was just OK but policy wrong

Quarry Pines is a tale of two nines. The front is traditional in layout and pretty typical, nice but not great. The back is carved out of an old rock quarry and has some nice visuals and a few intimidating holes. However it may be a little unfair on available landing areas. Overall the course is a good choice. My biggest complaint is the policy to charge extra for singles who want to stay safe and distance from people they have never met and know nothing about. Every other course played during the pandemic wants people to help control the spread by distancing and require strangers to ride separately. Here they want you to pay extra, over and above the cart fee included charge, in order to keep the game of golf safe and viable. If needed, raise the general price by a just a dollar or two to be fair to all.

The best on the south side

This course is part of a Native American casino resort. Things are shut down due to Covid, but not the golf thankfully. Like many native lands, this property did not start with the choicest piece of property, but what was developed from it is fantastic. The team, along with the designer, Notah Begay, did an awesome job with the course. The layout is fun, challenging, beautiful and well maintained. The staff is super friendly and well trained. The practice area is absolutely great. The GPS system is the best, accurate and detailed. Highly recommend this course in every way.

Not as enjoyable this time

Starr Pass is a nice golf course and part of a Marriot resort that is pretty shutdown right now. They have 27 holes designed by Arnold Palmer and has been one of great places to play for years. My problems may be too picky and specific to me, however they are real. The greens are OK but could be better , maybe by simply cutting them shorter and rolling them. Right now they seem spongy and too soft. Many of the tee boxes are hairy and need cutting along with many fairways that are too tall. There is no GPS in the carts. There is an app for your phone but what if you have a weak signal in the mountains? Many shots are blind and it is hard to figure out the right place to place a shot in both direction and distance. There are lots of places to lose balls which you may expect when you hit a bad shot but unless you know the holes well you may be confused as to where the most punishing danger is located. All in all, again, a nice place but there is room for improvement.

A nice course with one thing going for it

There are limited choices in the high Rockies and a short playing season because of weather. This drives up the cost to play but the scenery alone almost makes up for it. Vail has a great valley that looks over the Gore Range and the course takes advantage of this feature. However the flat topography limits the creativity of the design and it is not quite as interesting as some of the other courses. Most of the holes just do not have a lot of character or flair. The conditions were very good all around, including a good practice area. For the most part it has one thing going for it, it’s in “Vail”.

Quality course going through a rough spell

Mountain courses in Colorado are naturally pretty and lush in the warm months. But like every course, there are natural forces that affect it. In this case, they say a tough winter did some major damage to the greens and surrounding areas. Add the fact that the bunkers are not raked, cart paths getting rough and long fairway grass too wet to mow, and you get conditions that seem hard to justify a premium price. I am sure the members and local regulars are struggling with understanding natural elements as well as budget constraints. Either way, it is best to wait for things to get better or demand a reduced green fee. Best of luck to the Raven and I hope they recover.

A classic layout in an old school atmosphere

Amazing that the terrain can change so much in such a short distance. This course has some wonderful tree lined holes with a great layout by RTJ senior and junior. Tight pins and dangerous bunkers are their trademarks and this course has a great old school feel. The back nine brings in some great views of the red rocks and the finishing holes will test your nerves. Maybe the best public access course in Sedona. Prices for everything in Sedona are high, just like other parts of the world and have generally good weather and amazing natural beauty.

Enjoy the views

First off I will say I gave only 3 stars for two specific reasons. One, the greens are in good shape but VERY slow. With a dominate mix of Poana grass and a conservative cut, they make it very difficult for putts to “drop” into the hole. Second, the layout can be fun with lots of elevation changes but it gets to be a little much towards the end and club selection is a quandary if you haven’t played here multiple times. On the plus side, Stoneridge is a good value in the market and has some of the best views of the surrounding terrain which is quite dramatic. All in all, a unique and quality course that just needs some tweaking to make it stand out.

Best course in Tucson?

There are some great public tracts in Tucson. Star Pass, Arizona National, Ventana and Dove Mountain are all very nice and fun to play with great views. However, maybe even better than all those is Sewailo. This is part of the Casa del Sol casino resort, designed in part by Notah Begay built without residential property anywhere close by. All this makes for a superb golf experience. The range and practice area is great, service and staff well trained and the cart GPS system is perfect. I only used my laser tool a few times because pin locations are already plugged in and layup distances calculated with a tap on the screen. Like more courses it help to have played it once, but I had a playing partner with local knowledge that helped. Of 6 rounds in Tucson, Sewailo proved to be the best experience of all. 5 stars in every aspect.
