Shadow Hills Golf Club
Played On 10/07/2023Hotter than blazes
Teed off at 12:35, close to 100 degrees. The staff in the office was nice but the starter was a crusty old guy that acted like he didn’t want to be there. We had an interaction with another employee near the cart return area and he was less than pleasant too. The course was in very decent shape considering that it will shut down for over-seeding in less than a week. Greens were firm and medium speed, fairways were good, tee boxes were fairly level and tidy (no broken tees, etc). Always look forward to playing this course. There are no off course amenities.
Arizona Traditions Golf Club
Played On 05/07/2023Not great
Played this course a year or so ago, morning round, and it was pretty decent. Played it again this past February and figured maybe it was suffering from a tough winter. Yesterday’s (afternoon) round showed that the course just isn’t being maintained very well. Fairways were okay (thin) while the rough was just weeds and dirt. The greens were crispy dry and varied quite a bit speed-wise. Par 3 tee boxes were more dirt than grass. Prices are good and the people are nice; maybe it would play better in the morning. Not going back anytime soon.
Coyote Lakes Golf Club
Played On 05/04/2023Tight layout
I was pleasantly surprised at some of the amenities here that are not common to other local courses: gps equipped carts, ice and 2 bottles of water per cart and greeters/club cleaners near the bag drop - like resort golf. The course is very tight for most tee shots with pretty much unplayable desert areas if you miss the fairway. It’s also what I would call “gully golf” in that much if it sits below the level of the surrounding terrain/homes which seems to make the wind much stronger. The fairways were very good, the rough (what little there was before you were in the weeds) was playable and the greens were in good shape. I primarily played a 3 hybrid off the tees to keep the ball in play/under the wind and it worked pretty well. I would definitely play Coyote Lakes again.
Palmbrook Golf Club
Played On 05/03/2023Nice day at the course
Arrived as a single and was paired with a pleasant guy about the same age (70+). Played 7 holes at brisk pace before we caught the group ahead and then things slowed down; finished at about 3 hours and 45 minutes. Fairways were great, rough was very playable, water features on the back nine made it very interesting. Greens were posted as 8.5 and they played like it; they were also firm, smooth and not overly complicated (lots of waves or elevation changes). I will definitely play again.
Union Hills Golf & Country Club
Played On 05/02/2023Very pleasant round
Played as a single and finished in just over 2 1/2 hours. Every time I caught up to another group, they pulled over and let me through (smiles and waves). Fairways were in great shape, rough was spotty grass/weeds, greens were slow but pretty true. Cart was clean but probably the slowest I’ve used in years. Would play again.
Western Skies Golf Club
Played On 03/11/2021Reasonably priced, consistently well maintained
Fourth time playing Western Skies. It’s close to where we stay, reasonably priced and not too difficult to get a tee time. It has a forgiving layout for slicers/faders; can be a nightmare for hookers. Tee boxes and greens were in great shape, fairways were lush/green and the yellow, dormant rough was easy to hit out of. Bunkers were decent (not all of our fellow golfers erased their footprints) although wet from early morning watering. Great course to play early in the season as you work to get your game in shape.
Escena Golf Club
Played On 09/27/2019Great Value
Wanted to get a round in before the course closed on 9/29. The front nine was in excellent shape; fairways were still green and the greens were medium fast. The back nine fairways were not as good with many brown and/or bare spots; greens were the same as the front. We expected it to be much more dried out and were pleasantly surprised to find it this good for so late in the season. Enjoyed a breezy round with temps running in the middle 80’s. Staff was very welcoming, carts were in great shape and we were visited by the beverage cart 3 times out on the course.
Valley at Marriott's Desert Springs Resort
Played On 09/19/2018Exceptionally good condition for mid-September
Couldn't ask for a better place for the first round of our trip. The Valley course was still green (when so many others are browning off in preparation for over-seeding), the greens were smooth and fast and the staff (bag guy, starter, cart girl) were helpful, friendly and there when you needed them. The course has enough trees to define the fairways with the added benefit of providing some relief from the heat. Plenty of interesting water features to make you hit controlled shots. Bunkers were firmly packed sand and decent to hit out of.
Shadow Hills Golf Club
Played On 04/23/2017Back 9 Waiting Game
The course was in excellent shape and I had the good fortune to play it on a day with very little wind. Got a great price through GolfNow. Played the front as a single and didn't catch up to anyone until the 9th hole. Waited on the 10th tee for a single in front of me; paired up with him on the 11th tee. We were stuck behind two foursomes from 11 on who needed 2 or 3 shots to get out of our range from the tee. Would have been nice if the folks ahead would have let us play through.
Escena Golf Club
Played On 04/21/2017Love this course
I was very happy to see that this year I could book a round here through GolfNow as a single (in the past it was always 2 or more). The course was in excellent shape, maybe the best I've ever seen it. I played with a twosome and another single on what appeared to be a pretty full course, so the pace of play was perfect. This is a course where it really helps to know the greens and keep the ball below the hole. I try to play it every time I come down to Palm Springs as it's one of my favorite courses in the valley.
Indian Canyons Golf Resort - South Course
Played On 04/23/2015Near perfect day
I've played Indian Canyons - South (twice) in September when things were pretty dried out. For this round, everything was beautifully green. The tee boxes, fairways and greens were in fantastic shape. Only reason this wasn't a perfect day was because I dunked one on 16. This is a fun course to play. Note that I didn't rate the food/beverage higher because I didn't buy anything (in the past, their lunches have been great). I recommend this course to anyone and I try to play it myself every time I'm in town.
Mission Hills - Gary Player Course
Played On 04/22/2015Very impressed
Mission Hills Gary Player course has a great driving range/practice area; plan to spend time there if for no other reason than to enjoy the view. The course itself is very playable as the edges of the fairways typically slope back toward the middle. Lots of beautiful holes sprinkled with bunkers and water hazards. Greens were fast and true. Can't really rate the food and beverage since I only bought a Powerade on the course. I will definitely play again.
Palms at Marriott's Desert Springs Resort
Played On 04/21/2015Breezy afternoon
This course is always a joy to play. Greens were a little slow but otherwise everything was perfect. So many picture-worthy holes/views. This particular round was slow by Palm Springs standards, but still only took just over 4 hours. The afternoon breeze made several holes all the more challenging. Great round.
Indian Canyons Golf Resort - North Course
Played On 04/19/2015Perfect start
Everything was in great shape from tees to greens. Course is fairly flat and lined with houses but wide enough to not feel like you're playing in a bowling alley. Greens were a bit slow but otherwise near perfect. Played in 3 hours. Great price through Golfnow.
Palmbrook Golf Club
Played On 03/05/2014Fast, firm greens
An interesting layout with plenty of room for errant shots. Practice areas (driving range, chipping and putting greens) are conveniently located near the clubhouse. Greens were firm (hard to find ball marks) making it difficult to judge runout on chips and pitches; they were also smooth/fast so it paid to keep the ball below the hole whenever possible. It only took us 3 hours and 45 minutes to complete what felt like a very leisurely round.
Kahili Golf Course
Played On 11/28/2013Fun to play, great views.
Fairways and greens were in great shape. Several dogleg holes that require enough distance off the tee to have a clear view of the green for the second shot. GPS in the carts is a big help. Only thing that would be an improvement is if the course would rake the bunkers daily (the sand is difficult to smooth out with the hand rakes and many golfers don't take the time to do it right).
Mount Si Golf Course
Played On 8/24/2013Layout requires you to shape many of your tee-shots.
Greens were very good, fairways were dry and hard, several tee-boxes were in bad shape. Young guy behind the counter was friendly as opposed to another guy who can be a bit aloof. No discount for early bird on the weekends and $49 seems a little over-priced. I would play here again, just not as often as some other courses that are closer to home and an equal or better value.
Omni Rancho Las Palmas Resort - North/South
Played On 4/12/2013More varied terrain than a lot of the courses in the valley,
I had played the course once before and it was better than I remembered. Greens were smooth but slower than any of the other courses (4) that I played on this trip. Tees and fairways were about as perfect as they could be. Bunkers had been raked recently and had a deep enough layer of sand (no bottoming out). I will definitely play here again.
Desert Dunes Golf Course
Played On 4/10/2013Tough course with fast, undulating greens.
Desert Dunes is a tough enough course without the wind, so when the wind comes up, watch out! My round started in the calm, but the wind was blowing 15+ by the time we made the turn, making the back nine a bit of a nightmare. The course itself was in good shape and the greens were smooth and fast. Beautiful views of the mountains from anywhere on the course.
Resort at Tahquitz Creek Golf Resort
Played On 4/9/2013A fun, interesting course.
This course puts a lot less pressure on your game in that it's not surrounded by houses, most of the holes have room for errant shots and it isn't "tricky" (what you see is what you get). It still has the yardage to be challenging though and it's not like it gives away pars. I tend to relax when I play here and always seem to have a good round.
