The Golf Club of California
Played On 12/23/2020All good except food service
Walk up, outdoor snack bar closed but indoor "grill" open. Get your red hot COVID here! Ran out of hot dogs at 130 pm on a packed day.
Staff very friendly and helpful. Course in great shape for December in SoCal. Awesome course, but amenities not up to par on this day. Last time, great. Probably holiday stuff. Play this course.
Singing Hills Golf Resort at Sycuan - Willow Glen
Played On 11/26/2020Bad conditions and profits over safety
Greens were wildly inconsistent. On several holes fairway grass was deeper than rough. Pace of play was surprised good on Black Friday. Tried to force us to share carts because they booked a tournament on busiest day of year.
Coming around nicely
Played on Mother's Day so pace was crazy. Greens were weirdly inconsistent as they openly advise due to ongoing upgrade process. If the slow greens turn into the normal ones it will be a course strength. Fairways good. Tee boxes fine. I'd like to see a little more attention to the margins of the course but that's picking nits. Ok to put back into your course rotation.
Chula Vista Golf Course
Played On 07/22/2018Spirit Airlines of SD Golf - in a bad way
This course could be a gem. It really still is, due to the layout and relative cost., but the management is atrocious. This review is based upon four rounds here with the last two int the last two weeks.
1. Layout - very good and fun. Significant smudge due to hole #3 however.
2. Greens - "good" greens. Slow and pretty true with intermittent challenging pin placements relative to contour and surrounding features.
3. Bunkers - "decent".
4. Fairways - poor at best. The remedy for all the bare spots and other issues is to remove dead sod and replace with new sod with seemingly nothing else. What could go wrong? Hope you are good at hitting from dirt.
5. Service/intangibles: This is where the horrible management really "shines."
Pace of Play: Of course, CVGC has a We (twosome) were sent off early with a twosome who literally just walked in the Pro Shop and told they were on the tee (20 mins before tee time). We split into two twosomes before the third hole because there was no one behind and they needed to get their (very good) game together. No big deal. Foursome in front moving fine; of course we have to wait as a twosome. By the 12th the foursome and the rest of us had caught up to another foursome when there hadn't been one in front of them on the first part of the front nine for at least six holes. Which brings us to...
2. Marshals: Nicest fellas in the world here. Save my butt on the front nine when I didn't bring enough hydration into the round. But when at 13 it became obvious that the foursome two in front of us was causing the ten minute delays between shots, the marshal told us "I don't think they [the slow foursome] know what they are doing." Yes, we understand that. "Can you ask them to speed up?" Reply, "They are playing to the best of their ability." Yes, again, we understand, but so are we except for the long waits between shots. Finally talked to them and, shocker, we moved at a good speed from there on.
3. Cart/Pro Shop: For the second time here out of four, my cart died. Last time it was on the FIRST HOLE! This time it was on #7. We tried to call the Pro Shop about it, but there was no answer to both of our separate calls to the number listed when you Google the course. The beverage cart attendant finally helped us to have a new cart "ready at the turn" The cart attendant at the turn did not seem to know of our issue, but did give us a new cart and helped transfer our stuff. He also commented, "This [carts dying ] has been happening a lot. OK. Pro Shop guy (also the manager) confirmed we had called the right number but denied having received any calls except' "one that transferred to the bar." Nice try.
Until there is a new management team in place, come into this course with eyes wide open. Its like flying Spirit Airlines, but in a golf cart.
