Wet but a great course

First time playing here and I really like the layout. Despite the course being wet and cart path only it was an enjoyable round. I will say that I am glad to see that the course has not removed any bunkers from this course to help pace of play. The bunkers here are strategically placed to make you hit the right club and hit it well. Never playing here before I played from the White tees but will move back to the Green tees next time. For winter golf the course is in good shape overall. Clearly there are some severe wet spots right now but nothing too extreme that you can't play out of. The greens are in great shape and rolling really well. Your approach shot will hold and the putts were running true and quick for Jan. The bunkers are in good shape and I only found one that was a little thin on sand. My only gripe is the price for the time of year. It is a good course as other reviews have said but there is a lot of competition in the area that is just as nice if not better for a better value. I do recommend the course and will be back when things dry out a little and green up this spring. Oh and it was a 5 hour round but that was expected with cart path only. They did have a marshal out to try and speed things up but sometimes there is no way to move people along.

New Greens Make the Difference

I used the be a member here and made it back to play over the Thanksgiving weekend. Two summers ago the course started replacing their old Bent grass greens with new Champion Bermuda. All 18 holes are now complete and the greens are awesome. They are smooth, fast and will hold your approach shot. Before the investment to replace the Bent grass I would have not recommended this course to anyone. Now I will play here every time I am back in the Fayetteville area.

The course did suffer damage from Hurricane Mathew and Hurricane Florence over the last few years but things are coming back together. The clubhouse is currently under renovation from Florence. Looking forward to the new amenities being added with the renovation. Along with the greens and clubhouse they have made some small improvements elsewhere on the course. These enhancements make the course much more enjoyable.

The course layout is time tested and still holds up today. There is a tee box to match your game. Pay attention to landing spots and turns in the fairway so that you hit the correct club. The 9th hole is a great par 3 over water that plays slightly up hill. The greens are large with great character. They break true to what you see.

I recommend this course now and going forward with the improvements they are making.

Nice Course

The staff friendliness here is top notch. From check in, to the starter, to dropping off the cart at the end . The Pro Shop is nice and fully stocked with anything you may need. The Men's Locker Room is very nice. You can see the members here take pride in the amenities.

The course is overall nice. It didn't wow me with design or the layout but the courses overall well maintained conditions made up for it. It was a bit windy when I played so make sure you pick the appropriate tee box for your game. Tee boxes were well maintained and flat. The fairways rolled out nicely and were in good shape. The rough was not too long and I would say most definitely fair. The bunkers were very nice. The sand was a consistent depth throughout all the bunkers I found myself in. The edges of the bunkers were well manicured. Now the greens were rolling really well. Not too fast and mostly smooth. The only issue I noticed was that there were more than a handful of unfixed divot/pitch marks on every green. This was disappointing to see. There were also a handful of greens that had some clear damage from golfers and some invasive grasses moving into the greens. I hope the club can get those two things under control.

Overall a good course for the money that I would recommend to fellow golfers. The 4 out of 5 overall rating stems from the lack of a unique flavor that I expected and the greens with the issues I stated.

Another Williamsburg Value

Green Course at Golden Horseshoe is a great value. The staff was very professional from bag drop, to check in, to the starter, to the finish with the staff cleaning your clubs while you finish 18.

There is a complete practice area with grass driving range, large practice putting green and small bunker practice area.

The course conditions were just short of excellent due to some invasive grass growing in many spots on every Bent grass green they have. It has been very wet and hot in the Williamsburg area lately so the Bermuda rough was long. The fairways were manicured and rolled out well. The bunkers were edged and the sand was a little thin but even throughout the course. The greens held approach shots due to being soft from the rain but they rolled true if you didn't have a clump of invasive "Goose Grass" in your line.

Pace of play was just over 4 hours for our foursome. They had a full tee sheet for the day so I was very happy with pace. There was a beverage cart out that was fully stocked.

I recommend this course if you are in the area and looking for an all around experience for your golf dollars.

Exceptional Course!!!

By far one of the most unique layouts I have ever played. A really enjoyable American Links style course with plenty of elevation change throughout.

The course conditions were top notch throughout the course. Tee boxes, fairways and rough were all in amazing shape for late July and considering the fairways are Bent grass. There are plenty of bunkers and they are all well maintained. The greens here are large and have a lot of undulation throughout. I would suggest buying a yardage book and paying close attention to the provided information. You need to put the ball on the right level of every green or you will be staring at a for sure 2 and most likely a 3 putt. The greens were smooth and rolled true all day, both days I played.

The practice facility is top notch. Multi-tiered grass driving range, large true practice green and Pro V1's to hit on the range.

The clubhouse is gorgeous. The locker room has anything you could need pre- or post round. Fully stocked pro shop with plenty to choose from for anyone. Full bar and restaurant with very good food at more than a reasonable price. The staff here is more than accommodating all the way around.

This course being a part of the Dormie Network does make it private but give them a call and ask about playing. Ballyhack is worth the effort to play in my humble opinion. Plus inquire about the cottages they have on property for a stay and play feel.

Poor Value

First time playing at Fort Belvoir and I expected more from this military course. Being active duty I have played many military courses throughout the country and this ranks in the bottom half for me.

The layout has been chopped up sometime in the last few years I was informed. It now plays to a par 70 and less than 5900 yards from the Gold tees which is now the tips here. Many of the holes are straight with little character. More than a handful of short par 4's with elevated greens to make them a little more challenging.

The course conditions left something to be desired for sure. Tee boxes were thin on grass and rock hard. Fairways were dried out and hard. Most were in good shape as far as not being thin on grass. The rough was thick in some places but nothing extreme. The greens were in good shape for the most part. They are a little slow but that is due to having to let the Bent Grass grow a bit longer due to the heat this time of the year. Now if other golfers would just fix their ball marks on the greens things would be even better. There are a few holes that are under some work which causes some other issues. The highlight of the conditions are the bunkers. The sand is new and it is not thin. I would know as I found myself in my fair share of bunkers throughout the round.

The practice facility is OK. Downhill driving range all off of mats. Two different practice putting greens that are in OK condition. The pro shop is nicely stocked with any thing you may need at the course. They did have a beverage cart out during the round.

The value is poor whether you are paying the civilian rate or the military rate here. There are courses in Virginia that are the same price and much, much nicer in every aspect. I am hesitant to recommend this course right now but there are signs of some money being put into the course so maybe give it some time before you play here.

In my Virginia Top 5!

Ford's Colony is what a golf experience should be. From the bag drop all the way through the end of the round the staff was amazing. The starter for our round was David and he was so very helpful and pleasant to talk with. The bag drop gentleman were very accommodating as my playing partner was running a little behind so they drove him out to meet up with me on the first hole.

The course design uses the natural landscape so well from the elevation changes to the water on the course. There is plenty of water to be had here as well. Either you carry water off the tee or coming into the greens. The houses do not encroach on the layout in any way at all. As others have mentioned make sure to pay attention to the yardages on the course map they provide you to ensure you are in the right spot. The scorecard provides for the ability to play to the appropriate yardage for your game as there is a mix of 7 different tee box combinations with their blended yardages here. I really appreciate when courses offer this to meet everyone's game.

The course conditions were top notch for early July. The tee boxes, fairways and rough were in excellent shape. The greens were accepting of approach shots and were rolling true and smooth. The Bent Grass was a little on the longer side because of the summer heat so the speed was a little slow but consistent throughout. The bunkers were edged well. The sand was consistent depth and texture throughout the course.

The practice facility is extensive here. Multiple practice greens for putting and chipping. The driving range plays downhill and there are mats as well as grass available to hit off of. There is decent bunker practice facility here as well.

The food in the clubhouse was a little pricey for me but it was delicious. There was a well stocked beverage cart out on the course during the round. The pro shop is good size with plenty of merchandise to choose from for sure.

As my title states this is in the Top 5 courses I have personally played throughout Virginia. I highly recommend this course if you are in or near the Williamsburg area

Very Nice Greens

Kiskiack is an all around solid golf course. Booked through GolfNow with no issues. I can see where pace of play is an issue here as others have stated. Teed off at 718 as the fourth group out and the foursome in front of us easily fell over a hole behind within the first 3 holes. That caused a large wait and backup behind us. Teeing of this early should not push a round of golf passed the 4.5 hour mark but it did on this day. Never saw a Marshall come out to try and control this issue.

They have a complete practice area with grass driving range and covered mats for the winter. There is a large practice putting green.

The course was in solid shape from tee to green. There were very few spots in the fairways that were still suffering some winter kill. No issues with the tee boxes. The greens were running smooth, true and they were receptive to approach shots. Only issues with the greens are other golfers not fixing their ball marks but it is that way almost everywhere these days. There are four sets of tee boxes on the scorecard but they do offer a mixed set of blue/white tees to have something a little closer to 6,000 yards.

The course layout is not overly long but it is somewhat challenging. I played the Black Tees and it suited my game well. The Par 4's and 5's are not long but they use the natural slopes of the land, water and bunkering to force you to hit the appropriate shots throughout. The par 3's are very fair, either playing uphill/downhill or over water on the 11th from the Gold and Black Tees. I liked the mix of dog leg left and right throughout. Really enjoyed the 18th hole. Par 5 uphill that the tee shot is either all carry over water or play out safely to the right of the water. Truly a risk/reward decision hole.

There was a decent selection on the beverage cart of snacks and drinks. The clubhouse food was tasty and fairly priced. The pro shop had a good variety of items if you needed anything or wanted a memento. No GPS on the carts but they have yardage books in the pro shop. I used the GPS on my phone to see landing areas with no issues.
I recommend this course if you are in the Williamsburg, VA area. I would rate it currently at 4.75 out of 5 stars overall.

Near Perfect Greens

Despite the two reviews before mine the course and staff were awesome. The only issues I noticed in the course conditions were a handful of thin tee boxes. The fairways, waste areas, (there are no sand traps here by local rule they are waste areas) and what rough there is are all in good shape and fair. The greens are near perfect right now. They are rolling true, smooth and on the faster side. This is consistent with all the others time I have played here. For a more in depth review you can read my June 2017 review. The staff have always been top notch every time I have been here. I truly love the more natural feel to the course with the native grasses, the pine straw and again the waste areas in place of rough and bunkers. The food is delicious and I didn't feel it was overpriced for what you get. I have walked this course with a caddie, which I highly recommend, and used a cart. Either way you should give this historic Donald Ross design a play. This is still one of my favorite places in the Pinehurst/Southern Pines area.

Best Value In The Are

Legacy is in my top 3 courses to play in the Sandhills of North Carolina. The experience you get for the money is by far the best value I have found within the Aberdeen/Pinehurst/Southern Pines area. The greens are in amazing shape right now. Your approach shots will hold and your putts will roll true and smooth. Fairways and rough are in good shape and have no real issues. Only course condition issues I noticed were on more than a handful of the tee boxes where the grass is thin and the boxes are rock hard. Legacy has made some small changes since the last time I reviewed this by shrinking a few of the bunkers on the course. Not an issue just something I noticed. The sand in the bunkers is some of the best I have played lately. The staff here is amazing and they will do more than you expect while on the property. There is a full practice area with grass range, good size bunker and chipping area and two large size practice greens. The layout here is phenomenal with the use of the natural landscape and water. You will find some shorter par 5's that are challenging because of the greens. The par 3's here are a great collection of shorter holes all with some kind of hazard to avoid. Great mix of par 4's that force you to hit to a certain spot off the tee to get the proper approach to the green. The 18th hole is my favorite finishing hole in the area. The approach is almost all carry over water. The food is very reasonably priced and tasty. Treat yourself while golfing in this area and play Legacy. In my humble opinion you will not regret it.

Winter Damage Evident

Second time playing this course and the biggest difference is the clear damage to many of the fairways, bunkers and almost all of the skirt areas around the green. The area has seen a lot of rain lately so it was cart path only. The course layout and the green complexes throughout the 18 holes make this course a solid track. Greens are in good shape despite all the rain lately. This course is currently not worth the 65.00 they charge on weekends due to the conditions of many of the fairways and nearly all the areas around the greens. Hopefully when things dry out the fairways and areas around the greens heal up. There is a complete practice area with grass range, bunker area and good size practice green. I do recommend this course just not for the current price they charge.

Still Worth the Drive

This is my second review of Mattoponi Springs and the course is in 5 Star shape right now. Despite all the spring rain we have had in the area the grounds crew has done a phenomenal job keeping things beyond just playable. The greens are rolling true and at a good speed. Tee boxes, fairways and rough are all in great shape. I really like the variety of holes here from short par 3's to some longer par 4's. The elevation change here is used well. All the greens are multi tiered in some form or fashion. Nothing too crazy but definitely adds character. There is only a few holes where water comes in to play. Forced carries throughout the course. The 9th and the 18th holes are great holes that play downhill with forced carries coming into the greens. Practice area is still solid with grass range, large practice green and bunker facility. This course is worth the drive for me at over an hour so if you are in the Richmond or even Fredericksburg area make the drive and check out this course. In my opinion you will not be disappointed.

Full of Forced Carries

First time playing Highlands and I really enjoyed it. Value for the money cannot be beat for a course that was just recently open to public play. Layout has two distinct Nines. The front is shorter than the back by a few hundred yards. Also on the front you have three Par 5's and three Par 3's. The back nine is your more traditional Par 36 layout. The front nine also features the majority of the forced carries you find on the course. Definitely play with someone familiar with the course or use a GPS to know the distances to the proper landing zone. There are five sets of tee boxes to match your game. The font nine features a Blue/Black mixed set of tees. The tee boxes are filling in nicely from the winter. The day I played there had not been much rain lately so the fairways were running out well. The Bermuda in the fairways was not totally filled in yet but give it a week and it will be great. The rough was fine for Spring golf. The greens were completely healed up from the aeration earlier in the spring. They were cut and rolled so they were running true and consistent. The only issue I noticed was some of the skirts around the green did not survive the winter. The course is well aware of this as they are cutting out the dead grass and laying new sod down. The practice facility here is nice and has everything you could need. Grass driving range, full chipping and bunker area and the practice green is large and accommodating to multiple golfers. The staff was very friendly throughout the round. Best way to make a tee time is to use their website. The Reserve restaurant is delicious to say the least. The food and service are 5 star all the way around. If you golf in the Richmond area I have yet to find an all around better value than here.

One of the Richmond areas top courses

Lake Chesdin is one the areas top courses I have played. The staff here is very friendly and accommodating. The club house is very nice with a well stocked pro shop. The practice facility has everything you need from grass driving range, to bunker practice area, to a very large practice green. The practice green was exactly how the greens on the course were so no surprises when you got out there. There are four sets of tee boxes so you will have something to match your game. The tee boxes are in good shape overall right now. Only a few have some bare spots from the winter. The fairways are greening up nicely and the Bermuda grass is filling in well. The bunkers are nice with consistent depth throughout the course. The greens are top notch in the Richmond area. They have fully recovered from the aeration and winter. They were rolling true, smooth and consistent. There were only a few spots where the skirts around the greens either needed work or just haven't grown in yet this spring. There is a good mix of holes on this course to say the least. Definitely not a course you can just rip driver every hole and I really like that. The layout is nice and not overly challenging. The carts are really nice with plenty of room for your things as well as two USB ports to charge your stuff while playing. This course is not 100% private as you can book tee times through GolfNow. I highly recommend this course if you want to play something very nice in the Richmond, VA area.

Steel of a Deal

Well let me start with the best part of this course, the greens. They are 99.9% healed up from the maintenance performed about a month ago. You can hardly tell where the holes were punched and the greens were rolling true and smooth. The fairways are greening up nicely now that the weather has turned warmer. There are more than a handful of tee boxes that are near bare here though. That and the skirts around many greens are in need of work. Four sets of tee boxes to match any game. The two sides are distinct to each other. The front nine has more elevation change and very little in the way of hazards. It also has three Par 5's and three Par 3's. Two of the three Par 3's are over 200 yards from the blues. The back nine is much more park like with water hazards and flat. There are some longer and more difficult Par 4's on the back nine. This course is on the easier side for walking if you like to walk as I do. Pace of play was excellent but it was a Tuesday at 1230 when I teed off. I could see where pace of play may be an issue when the course gets busy. The value here I feel cannot be beat for the total experience you get. The staff is very friendly and helpful. There is a good size practice green. The range is more than adequate and has grass to hit off of. There is a new clubhouse with bar/restaurant. The pro shop is nicely stocked with anything you could need. The food was good and a great value like the golf. Definitely one of the all around nicer municipal courses out there.

Trending Upward

Played The Gauntlet on back to back days (one practice round and one stroke play tournament round) after a few days of considerable amount of rain in the area. Play was cart path only on both days. The course is under new management as of February from what the staff told me. You can see where they are trying to make improvements on the course. That being said I like the course layout. If you do not know about P.B. Dye and his style of doglegs, blind tee shots and forced carries then I can see how you might not like this course your first time around. The front nine is definitely more unique than the back nine. The course is on the tighter side of things throughout. The greens range from small to multi tiered and large. The greens have recently been punched which was a downer because it did affect the roll of the ball. Also the staff did not mention this when I made my tee time for Friday morning. The fairways were filling in nicely from the winter and were nicely groomed considering all the rain. There are more than a few places that are "Ground Under Repair" throughout the course so again you can see where improvements are being made. Now the bunkers are a whole different issue all by themselves. The staff does know this and they are slowly addressing the situation. If you like your clubs I recommend taking free relief from the bunkers as you see fit. Enough tee boxes to match your game but they need to do some serious work on them. They are very bare in spots and full of weeds. Pace of play was fine both days. Walking is allowed here. I gave the staff 5 out of 5 (despite not telling me about the greens) because they are very friendly and working on the issues currently facing the course. The food was good and the pricing was fair. The pro shop is small and there is not a lot of merchandise. I rated the value 2 out of 5 due to the current overall conditions and being charged almost $50.00. Currently there are courses that are in much better condition near here that charge the same rate if not less. Due to the effort of the staff and new management here I gave it overall 4 out of 5. I will play it again later this year to see if things are still trending upward and update my review.

Beautiful Course

Played Potomac Shores on back to back days in above average winds. For early spring the course is in good not great shape. I could not give the course an Excellent rating like so many others due to the condition of the sand traps and having more than a handful of greens that have some turf issues. Really enjoyed playing off Bent grass fairways. Disappointed to hear that they will be replacing the Bent with Bermuda this summer but totally understand why they are doing this. I really enjoyed the challenging elevation changes throughout the course. Three of the Par 3 holes are some of the more challenging holes on the course. The Par 5 holes are set up to get some strokes back if you give up a few on the Par 3's I mentioned. Truly a course that you can score low on if you pick the appropriate club off the tee. Now they know the sand trap issues they have as they mentioned it when I said something at the end of the round. There is sand so be thankful of that but some of the traps do not drain well and ALL the traps need the be filtered of the rocks present in them. Some of the rocks were fist sized. For the price that should not be the case. As for the turf issues on some of the greens. Clearly the mowers get too close on some of the undulation in the greens. Along with that many of the edges near the first cut were showing signs of stress. Just not something you expect to see for the price nor for a Nicklaus Signature course. They have brand new carts so no issues there. The practice facility is nice. Grass on the driving range with a good size chipping and putting area. The putting green next to the clubhouse is attached to the 18th green which was pretty cool to see. Clubhouse is beautiful with fully stocked pro shop, great locker rooms and the restaurant has some tasty food. The staff is phenomenal. Form the bag drop to check in to the maintenance staff back to the bag drop again everyone was extremely friendly, professional and very helpful.

Top notch customer service!!

I wrote a full review for my round played here April 02, 2018. I wanted to highlight how the staff fixed a booking problem and took care of my group. When I finished my round here on the 2nd of April I booked a tee time for Friday the 6th for around 10 am. Arrived Friday at 9 to check in and there was no reservation. The young man in the pro shop Monday afternoon booked us for Friday the 13th on accident. The pro shop guys talked with the starter and they were able to get my group out. We were squeezed into a gap in play from early in the morning and then paired with a local member for the back 9 which was playing as the front. I cannot stress enough how the entire staff went above and beyond to accommodate my group. As I said in an earlier review this course is the gem of Vegas. I stress to all my friends headed to Vegas for golf to play here. Best value I played in the five days of golf and the best all around course conditions for my week in Vegas which consisted of TPC Las Vegas, Stallion Mountain and Aliante.

Absolute Gem

Let me start by saying that Spring Creek is not completely private yet. That being said if you are thinking of playing here just do it and do not wait any longer. Despite the greens being punched a week earlier the course was still awesome. I understand that courses have to do maintenance. Plus they let us know when we made the tee time so no harm, no foul. The layout is amazing and the conditions are pristine. This course has some of the most well maintained bunkers I have ever seen. The Bent grass fairways are always a joy to play off of, much better than Bermuda. With 5 sets of tee boxes there is a distance and difficulty to fit your game. I am really looking forward to going back in a few weeks when the greens heal up because you can tell that the greens roll true and the slopes are consistent throughout the course. The entire staff at Spring Creek is top notch. The starter John was an absolute pleasure to chat with before we headed out. Kevin Haney the pro is a top notch professional. We talked about the course and golf for a good 15 minutes before I went to the range. After I was done he took time to talk with me about the round and to make sure I will be back when the greens heal up. In today's fast paced world it is hard to find customer service like that anywhere. The maintenance staff on the course was courteous and friendly. This may sound funny but the carts were some of the most comfortable I have ever ridden in. They have GPS on them to help out throughout the round. They have a full practice facility with separate putting and chipping greens. They have grass as well as multiple types of artificial turf to hit off of on the range. The Tavern on the Green is a great 19th hole and spot to get a bite at the turn. I have played what is considered some of the best public courses in America from privately to publicly owned. From Kapalua Plantation, King Kamehameha Country Club, Pinehurst, Circling Raven, Coeur d'Alene Resort, to Gold Mountain both Cascade and Olympic courses in my "hometown" of Bremerton, WA and Spring Creek ranks easily with those courses all the way around. I highly recommend calling Kevin and his staff to get out and play here.

North Las Vegas Gem!!

After reading such good reviews of Aliante I booked a team time for my foursome through GolfNow. When we checked in it was explained to us that Thursday mornings are their usual men's club tee times. Their was only two men's club groups that day so the starter sent them first as we were assured they would not hold up our play. Well let's just say that we did not see them after the first hole and we played in under 4 hours ourselves. The value through GolfNow was exceptional for this course. It was $10 cheaper than the place we played the day before and much, much nicer. All that being said the course was in great shape to say the least. Good layout with some challenges worked in the design when needed. A couple very short Par 3's and reachable Par 5's in two. The greens held approach shots and rolled true on the putt. The starter told us that whatever break we read in the greens to cut it in half and he was right. The fairways rolled out a lot compared to the other courses I played that week. Nice practice facility for putting, chipping and grass on the driving range. Beverage cart was out and well stocked. If you don't mind venturing to North Las Vegas put Aliante on your list because it will be worth it.
