Good round

Nice layout, friendly staff and perfect weather. My personal preference is not to have a practice range that hits ball into the water (two small islands out there, but no indication of distance). I don't need practice hitting into water....I can do that all by myself! Small item, but worth mentioning. The blue flags on the greens were difficult to see, especially in early AM hitting into sun. The blue blended into the foliage behind the green. That's not just my senior eyes but the entire foursome made the same comment.

Update the GolfNow course description!

There's only one course. Driving range doesn't exist. Judging by the weeds covering both, there are not recent developments. Reality is, it's a tired facility. Greens are large and in decent shape, except for the ballmarks that no one repairs. Pace of play was okay. Played here only because I was staying downtown San Diego and wanted something nearby. Given the same circumstances, I would try another course in the future.

Hello, We do have a driving range, a small one, but a driving range. It is irons-only. We are sorry that your experience was not as expected.

They're trying...

What used to be Oakmont has gone through a pre-pandemic shutdown, a pandemic shutdown and an abrupt change of course management companies. This is the first time I have played this course in 2020. Overall conditions are pretty good. Some bumpy greens, but fairways are in good shape. What's not in good shape is the bunkers. Lots of stuff growing in them. The gentleman who I played with agreed that we would treat them as Ground Under Repair. And for some reason all the flags were white (not red, white and blue). Not all the greens are completely visible, so you have to guess on your approach shot as to where the pin is actually located. But they are trying.....I will give them another peek in a few months.

Non-existent round

With most of California shutdown for coronavirus precautions, there have been a few courses opening up using social distancing precautions (no carts, no rakes in the bunkers, etc). I thought I had found one, that I actually like playing and is very walkable.
Booked the tee time (hot deal, no less!) and headed out on Sunday morning. THE COURSE IS SHUTDOWN! Not coronavirus shutdown, but closed for the long haul. Found that out when I arrived to an empty parking lot, empty pro shop (all merchandise gone) and closed restaurant. I knew the course was in the process of being sold, but had also heard it was opening for a day here and there without a regular schedule. It appears the course is being maintained (waiting on the sale??). I guess my question is how were these tee times even posted or available if the course was closed?

I live on this course near the 12th tee. They've been maintaining it (watering and mowing) but until today 5/6/20 it was closed. I walked it today. Pins are in place, tee boxes are ready, and the driving range and practice putting green were operational. You can only book online and payment is only available by credit card. I person to a cart and no more than two bags per cart. No rental clubs and other than restrooms, no food & beverage service. Put it does appear to be operational.

Perfect Ending for a week of golf!

Couldn't choose a better way to finish off our week of golf in the desert. I live in the SF Bay Area and my friend was visiting from Canada. Course was in great shape after overseeding. Pace was pretty fast, even with it being cart path only. We finished in under four hours.

How about some water and basic information?

I was spending the week in Palm Desert with friends visiting from Canada and trying to balance the pricey courses with some less expensive. While the course was in fairly good condition after overseeding and carts were allowed on the fairway, there were a few things that would keep me from recommending the course or returning for another round.
1) No drinking water on the course. None. Not a water jug, fountain...nothing. C'mon guys it's the desert! No ice chest on the carts either. Oh, and no beverage cart.
2) Based on the questions we asked at sign in it should have been obvious we were first time players at this course. Does the gentleman in the Pro Shop (?) fill in any details? No.
3) Sign at the pro shop indicated pin position. I assumed there would be a placard on the cart with pin locations. My error. Stopped at the pro shop on the turn to ask about pin locations and the gentleman who signed us in says, 'oh, you need one of these' and hands me a xeroxed copy of pin locations. Maybe he should provide that at check in?
4) Met the starter. We were early for our tee time, so we said we were going to hit a bucket of balls. He directs us to the range. Head for the range, assuming ball dispenser was there. No. The bucket needs to be purchased at pro shop. Back to the pro shop. Only one size available....large. Now, keep in mind a large bucket is easy to spot. Maybe the starter should have noticed we were missing a bucket of balls when we met him earlier?
My Canadian friend (and his wife) works at a golf course. He mows (retirement job) and his wife is behind the counter at check in. When we related our story to her, even she commented on the lack of info provided by the pro shop and starter. I am in the Palm Desert area at least once each year. No future rounds at Indian Palms.

Five Hours and twenty minutes.....

I play Rancho Solano a lot. One of my favorite courses in the area. But a weekday morning round should not take 5:20 to complete! It was so slow that one of the players in our foursome had to leave before completing the round. As we were teeing off on 18 another group of three drove past, saying they were giving up. I think the problem was the foursome two groups in front of us. As you approach the 16th tee, you can see both 17 and 18 fairways. Both were empty.

What's with the greens?

Eagle Vines is my go to course. Close to my house and great deals for early play. The layout is fun and overall the course is well maintained. However, their greens are in trouble. Don't know if a fungus has hit them or what. Two, maybe three of the greens were in good shape. All others had blotches and were really bumpy. Sure hope they can address the issue and get it back to its normally great shape.

Greens will settle down....

I booked this knowing they had punched the greens last week (thus the $30 round with cart), so no surprises. It's part of golf course maintenance that we will appreciate later in the summer. Because of the punches, nothing really rolled true or got the distance it should have. But the fairways were in great condition, drying out nicely from winter rains and the weather was pretty well perfect. I only gave 3 stars on the pace....they let out 2 groups of five in front of us.

No Cell phone coverage!

Indian Valley is beautiful. Hills. Remote. West Marin County perfect. But no cell service.! Due to winter rains (thank god!) course was still cart path only. Which would have been fine except for no cell service, which means no yardage readings for me. Probably had 5 or 6 shots where I brought the wrong club(s) and did not go back for the correct ones due to not knowing yardage

Pleasant Surprise

After having lots and lots of rain, I was going into withdrawals....no golf for weeks! Even if the rain let up, the courses weren't in great shape. Fairways were soggy, rough was soggy and not mowed on a regular schedule. And when the grass was cut, there were the usual clumps of dead grass that easily conceals a wayward shot. Well, we had a break in the weather and I know that Rancho drains pretty well, so I took a chance. Bravo to the groundskeepers! Only had three holes that limited cart access, greens were great, fairways great and even the bunkers were in great shape. Keep up the good work!!

Getting better

Troon took over course management several months ago and there are definite signs of improvement. Bunkers (at least the ones I visited) had sand in them, as opposed to previous rounds where it was like hitting off of clay. The rough was actually manageable and not left at U.S. Open depths. Took a chance playing on a holiday, but the pace was good and we (a threesome) were allowed to play through on the turn. Oh, yeah...getting birdie on the 18th always leaves me in a good mood!

Bring your own sand...

Last day of the vacation and I was looking for an early tee time at a course I had not played before. Nice layout. Beautiful surroundings. Enjoyable foursome. But.....avoid the bunkers at all costs!! There is no sand in them! The course is in the middle of the desert and there's no sand. Practice hitting off of wet clay and you might master the bunkers here. One other thing that really put all of us off...the grounds crew was spraying fertilizer right in front of us for about 4 holes on the front 9. He's wearing a haz-mat suit and we are following directly behind him. What's wrong with that picture? Much better courses to play in the area. Only reason this was reasonable price wise was it was a Hot Deal.

Walked

Could have been a five star review......

I haven't played this course in a few years. I like the layout and thought it would be fun to walk the course. How many courses have an elevator to get you to the next hole?? Windy day (white caps on adjacent Stafford Lake) made it a little tougher, but overall good day. My only complaint was they were letting out groups of five (5). We had two five-somes in front of us. Usually when this happens it's the 'locals'. I was just a visitor.

Good value for a Hot Deal

I hadn't played here in about 3 years. And I don't think they have done anything to the bunkers since then. Only reason I played, it seemed like a good deal (Hot Deal), so I got my $15 worth. Since this course is two 9 holers put together, the experience is two different courses. The original dates back to the Roosevelt era (Teddy, not FDR) and the new holes are well....new. Greens are two different eras also. STAY OUT OF THE BUNKERS (unless you like hitting off of clay). On the plus side, staff was friendly and accommodating and I finished the round in great time.

My favorite Napa course

Eagle Vines continues to be my 'go-to' course in Napa. Well maintained and ready to play at any time of the day. I teed off early (6:30), and even with that the greens were ready for play and the bunkers had been groomed already.

Don't they groom the bunkers??

I hadn't played this course in a few years. I remember it as challenging, especially if the wind is picking up. What I didn't count on is the poor conditions of the tee boxes and bunkers. I mean bad. My first clue should have been the practice bunker. It was like hitting out of drying cement. Unfortunately, it was representative of the bunkers out on the course. Many of the bunkers actually had standing water in them. Many of the tee boxes were in pretty bad shape too. Uneven ground and really chewed up (think muni course at the end of summer). When I got home, I went back to look at previous reviews. The first one up echoes my comments; bad bunkers and tee boxes.

Back to Reality

Played here on a vacation trip to Florida (I live in Northern CA). After two rounds at Trump/Doral I needed a round that was only charging double digit green fees! Shula's fit the bill. I booked through GolfNow (who wouldn't?), got the discounted rate and headed over for an early tee time. Weekday round just prior to major 4 day holiday weekend meant the course was empty. Starter got me out early, played the round as a single and finished the round in about 2:45. This was important because thunderstorms, dropping temps and increased wind was forecast for later that morning. I was impressed; the fairways were in good shape, the greens were immaculate and even with the early start all the bunkers I visited had been groomed and fully raked. I mention that because the bunkers at Trump White had not been touched yet by the time I ventured into them the day before. So, overall, better bang for the buck and a whole lot less pretentious. Sorry Donald!

Wait until the irrigation updates are done.

First off, I like Oakmont west. Pleasant course and surroundings. Plus it's a good walking course. However, I didn't realize how extensive the construction was. 17th hole is completely shut down (think Bushwood at the end of Caddyshack after the explosions). The back nine is in pretty bad shape now because of the construction. Our foursome decided we would use our discretion for declaring 'ground under repair' since they course managers couldn't possibly have that many signs. I will stay away until the construction is done and everything has grown back and been groomed.

Not as challenging as the West.

I forgot that Blue Rock will allow five-somes out..usually 'local' members. First 6 holes went at a nice pace and then we hit the wall. I counted at least 3 groups of 5 in front of us. Turned into a 5 hour round.
