River Hall Country Club
Played On 04/24/2020In SUPERB condition!
Always have liked River Hall’s layout, as Davis Love III did a lot with flat Florida swampland. Rained HARD just before we went out, and it course drains magnificently as always.
Green complexes rolling over 10, and not a bad lie on the property. One of my go-to tracks in SWFL. It should be yours too.
Babcock National
Played On 03/21/2020Already good, BN will be GREAT soon!
My second time at BN, so I’m practically a member. Big, wide track off the tee, but plenty of course even at the 6400-yard second tees. Variety of green complexes is interesting, and lack of trees makes wind judgment interesting. In GOOD shape for a new course, as the greens are still mega firm but also rolling true. A great deal right now for a course that will eventually be Lennar-ed into privacy. Enjoyed it!
Forest Glen Golf & Country Club
Played On 09/28/2016Wow! An absolute GEM!
I don't know where Forest Glen has been my whole life. Beautiful property. Great layout. SUPERB conditions. I judge courses on how many screwy holes there are (doesn't make sense to terrain, too deceptive, etc.) and Forest Glen doesn't have a single messed-up hole. Back is a particular challenge, as a couple driveable par-4s test you if you're driving it well.
Will play again. And again. And again.
Esplanade Golf and Country Club of Naples
Played On 09/07/2016Fine track that will only get better!
Esplanade is a newer course with lots of homes going in, but don't let that deter you -- this is a FINE course! Played it after some strong rains, so it was cart path only and greens were a little slow as a result. But I didn't catch a bad lie all day and conditions were generally superb. Clubhouse is likely 1-2 months away. Will play over and over until season starts!
Tradition Golf Club at Oak Lane
Played On 06/01/2016Wow what a challenging course!
Loved this track. Interesting terrain. Challenging but not unfair layout. No really boring holes. Back 9 plays a good 3-5 shots harder from the tips, with 10-11 and 16-17-18 ready to eat your lunch unless ball-striking and driving distance is on point. Loved the grass range (even with limited-distance balls ...) and drink cart out on a Wednesday afternoon. I'll be back - over and over again.
Wintonbury Hills Golf Course
Played On 09/29/2015Exceptional golf!
I finally found it! A golf course in Ct. that takes full advantage of a great piece of property, offers challenging-yet-fair tests, has quick greens and is affordable!
Wintonbury Hills is a must-play, people. I was struck by its visual beauty and playability. Green complexes are just that -- complex. Playing it over and over again will be fun when I get to see different hole locations.
A real treat.
Southwick Country Club
Played On 08/19/2015High ratings = delusional blind people
Ever seen a movie so awful that you not only walk out of the theater before it is over, you're actually questioning if you even like movies? That was me. These people below obviously either own this joint or are simply too delusional for rational thought. Goat ranchers wouldn't let their goats roam this dump. If you can't grow grass this time of year, just hang up your green thumb. "Fairways" shaggy and approximately 26 different kinds of "grass", greens 2000 sq feet with holes cut one pace on. Consecutive 290-yard par-4s that are shaped like Us. One beat-up Coke machine as the lone source of liquid refreshment. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
The Tradition Golf Club At Wallingford
Played On 07/17/2015LOVE THIS COURSE!
Met the assistant pro in my travels, so I thought I would check it out. Superb conditions - not a blade of grass out of place on a sprawling property. One two quibbles: the range is short and a little unkempt, and the 17th is downright bizarre. 17 plays like 280 from the tips, but is maybe a 260 carry uphill. So you lay up, right? Only the layup zone is barely visible and smaller than the island 12th green to land it on. They actually put a sand bucket out there to aim at, too.
North Ridge Golf Club
Played On 07/15/2015Good course ... Too bad half of it will disappear
I really liked North Ridge, overall. Fairways and greens were in great condition, though the clubhouse is showing its age. A couple of awkward holes - short carries that result in long-iron second shots, a drive that brings one of the new houses VERY much into play, etc.
Blackledge Country Club - Gilead Highlands
Played On 07/01/2015WOW!!!
I played the Highlands course ... And about three holes in, I thought about some of the state park courses I've played in the past that would have only needed like $1M in annual maintenance to be spectacular. Well Blackledge is that place.
I didn't have a bad lie all day. The greens - even with HARD rain earlier that day - rolled smooth and true. The routing is really cool to take advantage of the terrain. A handy old-school yardage book came in handy when I needed to judge a couple carries. This is just golf for golfers. I'll be back, over and over again.
White at Tunxis Country Club
Played On 06/30/2015Quality course, quality value
Tunxis was a very good choice, and a GREAT hot deals value. The Green Course was in strong shape, and the greens rolled true throughout. I'll definitely be back!
Tower Ridge Country Club
Played On 06/27/2015A bit of a goat track
I expected more, based on the reviews. Shaggy all around, and most greens are still VERY beat up from a tough winter - maybe the only course around that is still struggling. Several holes are flat-out dumb -- including a downhill par-3 that plays 244 from the tips and 205 (!!!) from the whites. Entire place is in a general state of disrepair, although the cart girl was nice (cash only) as was the grille at the turn. Pro shop is sparingly stocked.
