Ardencote Golf
Played On 06/18/2022This course is seriously neglected.
There are too many problems with this course to mention all of them here. However, I did play seven holes after which I gave up and walked in. The holes obviously hadn’t been cut recently so putting was a joke. The course layout is very poor with trees overhanging fairways (a tree surgeon is definitely needed here).
The course was obviously built on the cheap and general maintenance is very lacking. I don’t think a golf architect was consulted before this course was built.
Oxford Golf Club
Played On 06/12/2022First unlucky round this year
Normally this course is a great treat, however on Sunday it was anything but.
The pace of play was good for the first three holes, then ground to a halt. By the forth hole there were three groups waiting to tee off! This went on for the next five holes when a foursome that had ploughed through the players behind me told me to stand aside as they ‘were coming through’, claiming they were in a match play competition. I explained that going through would make things even slower for rest of us, to which they responded by telling me they were coming through whether I liked it or not. I just continued playing and ignored them as they were being unreasonable. On the eleventh hole a golf course employee arrived in a buggy to try to sort things out as this so called match play foursome we’re creating quite a scene, someone had obviously phoned the pro shop. The pro shop employee told me to let them through as matches took priority. After they had gone through the pace of play became intolerable taking forty-five minutes to play two more holes, I then picked up and walked back to the pro shop to complain. Unfortunately, it was closed.
Will you please refund my green fee as my whole day was ruined by these rude and selfish members.
Drayton Park Golf Club - Drayton Park Course
Played On 06/05/2021This course has some eccentric hole layouts.
I enjoyed playing with the two other ‘Fire sale’ golfers, mainly because one of them knew the course layout, it would have been very difficult to go from some of the greens to tees otherwise. The course is lacking in golf furniture, ie: benches for us oldies, there was only one on the whole course!
We had a beer afterwards and tried to order a meal, unfortunately all they had on offer was a filled bap which wasn’t sufficient.
Other than my comments above, we all had a pleasant afternoon.

Played On 01/28/2017Very balanced course layout.
I arrived half an hour early and due to an important Oxford football fixture, the course was pretty empty.
Having been designed in 1922, the trees have matured and encourage some forethought on fairway placements from tee to green, so relatively challenging first time round.
A well rounded course which considering it is the end of January, played very well.
The club house is adequate, however I have played inferior courses around the UK with much plusher facilities, maybe a wealthy benefactor would be welcome.

Played On 12/27/2016This course has mature trees now which are a challenge.
The course is in great condition for this time of year.
Thetford Golf Club
Played On 11/02/2016Golden Oldies
I joined Thetford in 1978, since then a compulsory purchase order of some of the front nine holes to build a by-pass forced new holes to be built into Thetford forest, which have been a success.
Twenty years ago we moved to the Kent coast and rarely play Thetford now, however I played today while visiting family. The autumn weather hasn't affected the greens, fairways or tees yet and we also spotted the odd pheasant and deer on the course today.
The only problem was the slow play which could be improved if it was marshalled properly, however, it was overall an enjoyable day, followed up by a pint in the pleasant club bar.
Southampton City - 18-hole Course
Played On 10/28/2016Wasted potential
On arrival, the course looked pleasant enough, however the greens were so slow that even a child could putt on them. The fairways were so cloddy that it was hard to get an even contact on the ball without a muddy divot. Obviously, the green keeper lacks the experience/training required to work on a golf course.
The clubhouse is architecturally pleasant, built in 1935, however the original Crittal windows were very evident and the whole premises are very run down, obviously in need of a major upgrade. The toilets are particularly unpleasant and smelly.
Judging by the popularity of the venue, it is sad that this council run golf course isn't ploughing money back into this facility which has huge potential.
