A terrific day in Paradise

This was as enjoyable of a round as I've had in a long, long time. A top-10 experience because of so many factors.

For starters, we played with with director of instruction - David Havens. He was awesome. So helpful, so friendly and a great way to play with course because of his helpful knowledge of the place.

The greens were spectacular. And I don't say that lightly. They were as good as anything I've seen, maybe ever. They were so pure and nearly perfect. You knew you'd always get a true roll.

The layout is great too. You can spray it a little off the tee and get away with it, but the holes are a great collection and the par 3s are particularly memorable. When/if you hit it in the water on the 17th hole (it's a real possibility) make sure you take a look at the sign that's in the pond. Classic.

Take some time to enjoy the views of the ocean. You can see if from almost everywhere on the course.

Quite a treat

I've lived in Orlando for over 20 years and had never heard of this place, but was so pleasantly surprised by how fun of a track it was.

It was closed for 6 months to re-sod, restore greens and bunkers to original designs, etc. We had the pleasure of playing just before it re-opened to the public.

I liked it a lot. Fun to play, a good smattering of holes, especially the par 3s and it was a great laid-back atmosphere. It was only an hour from my house and I'll absolutely play there again. Soon.

A beautiful fall day on the links

Took a nice stroll down from Orlando with some buddies to see the newly re-sodded Wanamaker Course and new member facilities (locker room, restaurant, etc.).

It was a terrific day and a good time was had by all. The course was in great shape and the greens were as good as anything I've played in this state all year.

While I enjoyed the whole layout, I was particularly fond of the par 3s and the variation of shots/clubs you could hit into each - you could hit anything from a 7-iron to a 3-wood.

Next time down I'll plan to have more time and take a look at the other two courses on the property.

A neat experience

A colleague and I went out on a Monday afternoon and got paired with two longtime local members, a father-son duo. Nervous for the first hole or two (language barrier, do they like Americans playing their course, etc.) we didn't know what to expect.

It turned out to be a fabulous round of golf. They couldn't have been nicer and it really was a great experience. The golf course was about what you would expect. It was solid, in decent shape and was a shortish, cute layout.

You don't necessarily go to Germany for a golf trip, but if you happen to be in the area, take some time to go out and play a few holes.

A top-three golf experience

Full disclosure, it was a top golf experience simply because it was just me and my 8-year-old son alone for 4 hours. It was delightful. He played well, I played well and we just had a fantastic time.

This is a top-notch facility with a great clubhouse and three solid golf courses. We played Robber's Row, which I'd recommend. The course was in great shape and the routing was way better than I was expecting. There was good variety on holes and the par 3s were all really good. I've played many courses on HHI and had not played at Port Royal before. Am glad I got the chance to spend some time there.

A delightful morning...

Had the pleasure of playing here with my young son while on vacation and I was pleasantly surprised. I've vacationed on HHI for the past seven years and like to play two different courses each year.

The place exceeded my expectations. It was in great shape and the greens were nice and smooth. There was great variation of the holes, especially the par 3s and the staff could not possibly have been more friendly and helpful. Overall a really solid golf experience.

Quaint and awesome

Another course that I'd heard plenty about but never had the opportunity to play. I knew it hosted the Walker Cup and the Curtis Cup, so it had to be good. It was.

The locals are so fun and hospitable and the starter is a hoot. The best thing I can think of to say about Nairn is that it's a place I could play everyday and never get bored. Many other courses in Scotland are spectacular but you wouldn't necessarily want to play them every day if you had the choice. No so with Nairn.

It's a fun walk, has a neat variety of holes and it as terrific overall atmosphere. Highly recommended.

My favorite course in Scotland

I played here five years ago in absolutely horrendous wind and rain. It was a miserable day, but when I left, I still knew it was one of my favorite courses in the world.

After playing there this time in really good conditions, nothing happened to change my mind. It's simply fantastic and, to me, it's the top of the class in Scotland. And I've played many of the great ones there

The views, the layout, the greens, the town...everything about the place is first class. It's a hike to get up there from many of the bigger towns down south, but if you ever have a chance to play here, make it happen. You won't be disappointed.

Don't overlook Royal Dornoch's beautiful neighbor

I played here five years ago and forgot how beautiful it is. That day was gray and windy and it was really a survival test. I didn't have time to take it all in.

This time, although windy and a little rainy, it was clear, which gave me a whole new appreciation for how great the course and the views are. The par 3s are terrific and it's a great walk.

The staff is great and the food is some of the best you'll find in the area. When in that area everyone wants to play Royal Dornoch (and rightfully so), but Skibo is only four miles away. Make it a priority.

Such a treat

Had been to Scotland several times and had heard great things about Cruden Bay so I was very much looking forward to this round. It did not disappoint.

We were guided around the course by a club member, who was a great host and extremely helpful with pointing out some of the course quirks.

I found the place charming and loved many of the features. The views on the water are spectacular and it's fun to play. The dogleg left par-3 was different than anything I'd seen before, but if you hit a good shot you're rewarded. Nothing wrong with that.

This will continue to stay on my list of places to play each time I return to the area. Good times.

A new Scottish option

The place is beautiful, and some will understandably give it five stars instead of four stars, but it was ridiculously difficult. Too difficult for me.

Our group had two good players and two mediocre players and, on this windy day, we looked for at least one ball on every single hole. It got tiresome after awhile.

But it's big and massive, just what you think a Trump course would be. The par 3s are fantastic and there are many memorable holes, but I feel like it was designed to be hard just for the sake of it. It'll be a blast for single-digit handicappers, but not so much for anyone in double digits.

Home of a European Tour event

Murcar is good, but it's easy to see why it gets lost in the shuffle with so many other great courses in the area. It butts up to Royal Aberdeen, and Trump International and Cruden Bay are both up the coasts.

But give Murcar a look if you're in the area looking for a place to play. The staff is super friendly and the course is a good place to play if you're looking to get your links footing under you. We played it right off the plane and it was a tough afternoon, but it didn't dampen our spirits.

It'll host a European Tour 64-man match play event in late July, hosted by Open champion Paul Lawrie.

A fun afternoon

Had played here about 12 years ago but it was much, much better than I remembered.

For starters, the course was in great shape and the greens were pure. There are eight holes that are recreated from some of the most famous places in golf - including the 12th at Augusta National, the Road Hole at St. Andrews, etc.

Now, the recreated holes are neat and standing on the tee box of each you can tell exactly which hole it mimics, but it does make for an interesting, uneven flow to the routing. That's not a big deal with me, but it may be for others who are more particular.

I liked it. Would play there again any day.

As good of an overall atmosphere as you'll find in Florida...

I had the great thrill of playing alongside the architect, Steve Smyers, and it was on a picture perfect day. To play a beautiful place with the man who knows every inch of the property is an informative, eye-opening experience. And Steve is one of the nicest men you'll ever meet in this great game.

Old Memorial was a treat. The bunkering was fantastic (a Smyers trait) and each hole plays with a different wind direction than the hole before it. The course is very difficult and the greens were lightning quick, which is exactly how the members (most of them single-digit handicappers) prefer to see it.

The clubhouse and the men's grill topped off the day and made the whole experience one of the better ones you'll find anywhere in the country.

Nothing but great things to say about Old Memorial.

I'm a big, big fan

A buddy of mine and I tacked on a day at Old Waverly before heading over to a Florida-Alabama football game. I'm glad we found a way to make it happen.

We played 18 holes, had a late lunch, then went out for another nine holes before dark. This was a fantastic experience and the course was in fabulous shape.

The main takeaway is that this is a place that you could easily play everyday and never get tired of it. It's fairly generous off the tee - you can spray it a little - and is playable around the greens. If you miss one you have several options how to play the shot toward the hole.

I can't say enough great things about the staff and the members. Everyone was so friendly and accommodating and were genuinely thrilled to have us play there. It was Southern hospitality at its finest.

Great, but difficult track

This place is obviously fantastic. If it wasn't, so many touring professionals wouldn't like there like they do. It lives up to its billing in every sense.

But, and there's always a but, it's extremely difficult, especially around the greens. You can't be short of the hole, because there are false fronts. You can't be long because then you'll have an impossible chip or putt back down toward the hole. Your only real option to score is to hit the ball pin-high on every hole, and my game just isn't good enough to accomplish that 18 times. Five or six times, yes...18, no chance.

Still, it's a place that you can't pass up and it never disappoints. Always in immaculate condition.

Really strong track...

I had heard about this course and was excited about the chance to play. I enjoyed the round immensely.

First, the staff could not have been more friendly. They were delightful. Second, the golf course gave me all that I could handle.

I particularly liked the look from the tee boxes on most of the holes. It was pleasing to the eye and seemed like there was plenty of room to drive the golf ball. Now, don't mistake that with meaning that this course is easy, because it is not.

It played long for me and I found myself hitting longer irons into the greens than I had hoped. But the challenge was great and the day was spectacular. If you need to make par on the par-4 18th hole to shoot a good score, good luck. It's a beast.

Totally recommend this place.

One of HHI's best tracks...

Everyone wants to play Harbour Town, and rightfully so, but the Ocean Course at Sea Pines should not be overlooked.

For starters, the newly renovated clubhouse is spectacular. It gives the whole facility a beautiful, stately presence.

The course is a treat too. You have to bring your A-game off the tee as this is a very difficult course if you're struggling with the driver in your hand. It's very intimidating while standing on the tee. But once you find the fairway there seems to be much more room hitting into the greens.

The par-3 15th hole is a treat as it faces toward the beach. Then the closing three holes are all you can handle.

I played with my 7-year-old son on this day and loved that they have a family tee on each whole, which totals about 3,600 yards. This was perfect for him and greatly appreciated.

Would love to go back again and play another round.

Don't overlook Royal Birkdale's beautiful neighbor

This was the fifth round in 3 1/2 days and I could hardly get out of bed. I was tired and my body ached. Glad I found a way to solider on.

Hillside is right next to Royal Birkdale and many locals in these parts consider it a better course. I haven't played Birkdale so I can't officially weigh in, but it'd be hard to imagine it could be better than this beauty.

That par 3s are great, and make you think. The real fun starts on the back nine, which is more beautiful than the front. We played the first 12 holes in relatively benign conditions but the wind started to blow down the stretch. We had our hands full.

I'm a big fan. Pleased that I got my act together. It needs to be near the top of your list if you visit the Southport area.

Beautiful little track that deserves more love

I'll be honest, this was the morning round of a 36-hole day that had nearby Royal Lytham & St. Annes as the afternoon round. So, I don't want to say I was overlooking the round, but I was overlooking the round. That was a mistake.

It was clear from the first hole, that this place is good. It has good variety, makes you think and presents plenty of a challenge.

It's also pretty and picturesque. On this day, the skies were fairly gray, so the browns, golds and greens of the course provided a nice contrast with the skies and gave us plenty of photo opportunities.

I'd play it again in a second.
