If You Love Golf, This Is Your Heaven

I've had this course on my bucket list for a few years, and when the opportunity came to play it, I was excited. My expectations were through the roof, so my biggest fear is that those expectations would not be met.
Well, I should have not worried about that. It EXCEEDED my lofty expectations.
From the professionalism and friendliness at the bag drop, to the ProV1's at the driving range, to the perfectly maintained course, and to no holes feeling like I had already played it, this place was amazing.
If you are looking for a place to take your buddies to for a trip, this would be a great place to go.

Fun Little Track

Needed 10 more points to get my next GolfNow reward, and figured I'd look for a good deal yesterday. It was raining, but I knew it would be over soon, so I thought I would have to go to a little par 3 course. Imagine my surprise when I saw that they had a hot deal for Alhambra for 10 bucks! I've been meaning to get to this track since it's only 20 minutes away, and had to take advantage!

I got there, and there was NOBODY on the tee box, and it was walk only, but for 10 bucks, I didn't mind one bit since I normally walk anyway.

I had a blast. Didn't know what to expect, since usually courses that are a little short leave a lot to be desired, but this exceeded expectations. The greens were excellent, and in spite of the rain the course was fantastic. I definitely want to get back here when they don't have such a wet course.

This course is a great one for the beginner looking to learn, and for the single handicap looking to improve on their shotmaking.

I'll be back!

The Good, The Bad, The Ugly

The Good

I love the layout. Short par 4's. Long par 4's. Short par 5's. Normal par 5's. Great little par 3's! A little something for everyone, and very forgiving off the tee.

Course conditions in the fairways and rough is always good. The rough is thick, but not penal.

The Bad

It seems they are always doing some form of maintenance on the course. Greens are never really all that good. Man, if the greens were good, this course would be amazing!

The driving range leaves a lot to be desired, but at least today they had enough buckets!

The Ugly

Pace of Play. SOOOOOO slow. Today's round took 5:17. When I paid today, I saw a sign to make sure I carried my receipt with me at all times because they would have a marshall driving around to see when you started in order to make sure pace of play was what it should be. Never saw a marshall, and the pace was horrible.

A simple solution? Change tee times from every 7 minutes to every 9, and while you may lose a few bucks in the short term, you'll gain a lot more in the long term, because I won't go back, and I am sure many others feel the same way.

This course could be great. I hope one day it is.

Potential, but not there yet

This course has potential, but it's not a 4 or 5 star course yet. Once they are able to use recycled water, it will be so much better, but until then, it's gonna struggle to keep the grass it needs to have quality fairways.

I don't know if this is normal, but today, my first time playing, there were a couple dudes with absolutely dreadful course etiquette. Both my wife and I nearly got hit by balls while we were getting ready to tee off. Thankfully we were not hit, but without hearing someone yell "fore" we had no idea it was coming.

The staff was super friendly. The range high quality. The greens superb. I hope that Mr. Ashworth is able to see his vision for this course become a reality.

Thank you so much for your review here, we are happy to hear you loved the course and the greens, happy to hear the staff made your experience that much more enjoyable. Sorry to hear there were some golfers out there that did not consider other players on the course. We will keep an eye out. Come back and see us!

Why the Hate?

I read a lot of reviews on this course, and most were very negative. I was staying at the hotel for Christmas, only had to pay 27 dollars for 18 with a cart at 9am, and I could walk right from my room to the course. Good deal all around.

The whole time I was playing, I kept on thinking, why did so many folks hate this place? I was paired up with a local twosome (Nice to meet you Jason and Colin) and asked if they knew why, because we were all enjoying the place. Apparently, with the drought, this course really struggled, but with the recent rains, it's looking really good.

It's not all good though. As you'll see in many reviews, the warmup leaves A LOT to be desired. The starter is inside now, but the wiring is bad, so you can't actually understand a word that is said from the speakers.

But, after shooting a 10 over par 82, I was happy with my play, and the course, but then they went above and beyond and had someone cleaning your clubs as you putted on 18! Thanks guys, and I'll see you all again when I visit SD again!

Great Course for Beginners

Not the greatest course in the area, but good bang for the buck. I went mid afternoon, and was really lucky to be able to go out on my own and didn't catch the twosome ahead of me until hole 8. I joined up with them for my final two holes, and was done with the 9 holes in a little over an hour. I don't know if pace of play is always this good, but on this day it sure was. It's a fairly short course, and visually it's not pleasing, but interesting setup. I'll have to go out some day to play a full round so that I can see the back nine. Bunkers aren't sand, but a gritty gravel, so you have to know you're gonna hit it thin every time.

Good, not Great

My day did not start off so hot, as I walked in, and the guy at the cash register seemed almost offended that I interrupted whatever he was doing so that I could get my cart and pay for some range balls. Outside, there were two areas with carts, with little separation between the two, so it would have been nice if he had told me where I was supposed to get my cart from. Luckily, someone who had played there before told me that I was in the returned carts, or my cart probably would have ran out of juice.

Once I began to play, though, things went really well. I started off as a single, and played for first 8 holes like that before catching up with a threesome who immediately asked me if I would like to go ahead and join them. I did, and they were a fun group of guys to play with.

The fairways and rough are not bad at this course, but the greens are horrendous. Multiple divots not repaired, which only makes the greens that much tougher to putt on.

It cost me 20 bucks with a cart, so it's a good value, but the course has nothing on Rio Hondo. But if you desire a cheaper muni course, that's quite a bit less difficult, with some still fun holes, you'll enjoy Los Amigos.

Great Bang for the Buck

I always look for the Hot Deal for this course, even though the normal price (51 bucks) is a fantastic price for it. The staff are amazing, and the course is a challenge, but not impossible for mid to high handicappers.

The only negative to this course, and it's probably due to the pricepoint being so perfectly affordable to most everyone, is that it's always got a lot of people on the course. Unfortunately, not enough people believe in the "Tee It Forward" principle, and play the course from the Blue's and probably shouldn't. This slows the play way down. The first time I played it, it took 5:40, and each other time I have played (5 times) it has ranged from 4:30 to 5:10. If they provided course marshalls to speed up play, or let faster groups through, this course would get the Five Star score!

I love the course, though, and will play it once a week for as long as I can play golf!
