Always in great shape

I play this course about once or twice a year generally, sometimes a little more and I've never played it when it wasn't in spectacular condition no matter what the season as far as the course itself the only negative criticism I could mention would be a lot of the collar areas around the greens need some work but in the grand scheme of things that's a pretty minor detail if that's the only flaw you could find in course conditions staff like always is super friendly even to nonmembers and personally that's the way it should be as every guest is a potential member and other private clubs in the area without mentioning any names that are in Johnson City could take note of that the course is very fair and not too long or too difficult for any number of skill levels and has a good variety of holes some shot making holes some reachable par fives things like that you won't be disappointed in the course itself at all but don't expect any type of pro shop amenities that you will find at a typical golf club although I'm sure it is coming at some point but the course itself is always in super condition they do a fantastic job there even in the off-season when golf courses generally can be a little rough around the edges

hills

probably the hilliest course I've ever played lots of elevation changes but it was fair…had very few side hill lies but lots of uphill and downhill lies Like most courses of this type you probably need to play it a second time because there's a lot more room and fairways and landing areas are a lot wider than you think from most tees course was in great condition… The greens were really near perfect. Might be the prettiest course and setting I've played in a while if ever great scenic views especially on the backside. Played on a Monday and was hardly anyone else on the course I imagine it's much busier on the weekends. And how can you not love that logo? Ha ha

fun course kings north

really enjoyed the course layout. Not super tight really anywhere but still plenty of danger if you hit it way off-line. several holes had more than one option as far as how to play it whether you wanted to take a driver up over a corner around some trees or lay up on the dog leg to around 100 yards or try to reach a par five in two but if you chose wrong on any of those scenarios you were penalized but also rewarded if it worked out. The course was in excellent condition. And I booked as a single on GolfNow with a threesome and the bag attendant immediately told me since I booked as a single he was going to give me my own cart he said you paid your money as a single you shouldn't be stuck riding with who knows what. That was a change from most courses but I will also say the three guys I played with couldn't have been more enjoyable to play with. in fact if I had been playing another day and they had been I wouldn't have minded playing another round with them at all. Starter very friendly the guys in the pro shop very friendly. it may seem expensive but relative to everything else down there it's really not

First time playing in several years

I had only played here once about 10 years ago. Some of the more notable changes that I noticed under the new management: the course conditions were excellent greens were pretty slow by most golfers standards but they were in perfect condition the traps were in excellent condition and all looked like they had been raked and maintained to start the day the tea boxes just simply needed to be mowed but other than that no complaints there and one of the biggest changes was it's no longer cartpath only which I'm sure improves pace of play my biggest complaint and this may be a GolfNow issue moreso than this course is I booked as a single with a twosome Saturday morning and got over there to find that the twosome decided to move their teetime to the next day which told me they were probably locals who just saw someone else had booked with them and they didn't want to play with someone.. I have run into this many times this summer in different places including my own local area and golf courses do not pair up or enforce teetime pairings and you might have singles and twosomes all over the place out there amongst threesomes and foursomes. Personally I think the golf courses are losing money by doing this and I know speaking from my own local area, the courses have gotten so packed they are leaving so much money on the table by having 10 teetimes tied up with 18 people. nonetheless I went off as a single and luckily it was early enough there were only about three big groups in front of me all who let me go through but the staff is very friendly and the course is in excellent condition and much better than the one time I played at 10 years ago I would definitely recommend and I loved the layout as it has some very forgiving holes but also has some tight harbortown type of holes where you have to hit good shots to play well

First time in a few years

I have not played this course in probably six or seven years, definitely not since the ownership change but it is a fun course to play.. lots of cool interesting holes and not a lot of real "stupid "holes that you generally find at least a couple of on every public golf course nothing really to complain about other than the pace of play has always been pretty slow down here and I think it's just because the golf course can be difficult for the average hacker it's not really anything that the course does or doesn't do and not really anything they could do about it and to be clear it was about a four hour and 20 minute round for a foursome which isn't terrible timewise it was just a bit of a slow pace for me personally but course was in good shape and staff was friendly I live about an hour and 15 minutes from this golf course and I wouldn't mind driving that to play it

great course but...

The course itself is a great track. I love the course but on this particular day we left with a really bad taste in our mouth almost to the point of not being sure if we will return or not. mostly centered around the pace of play and specifically one group which is why I'm reluctant to be really negative about the course but it would be nice to see a Ranger at least drive around the course once or twice throughout the day just to check on things but you don't see this at many courses at all anymore I realize that. we caught three women on about hole number seven with nobody in front of them anywhere in sight and they never once offered to let us go through and I'm talking about it being so slow we hit our approach shots into the greens after they had pulled away, we finished that hole, pulled to the next tee box, teed our balls up and they had still not teed off on that hole. I do regret that we did not call into the clubhouse but I've never liked doing that. and they clearly knew and saw we were behind them waiting as they turned around and looked at us a couple of times from their Teebox. and I can't tell you how they played as far as whether they were any good or not if they were slow because of bad play but I can tell you they were still taking time to fish balls out of the creeks and ponds and things like that knowing we were waiting behind them with nobody in front of them. as I said I love the course but we drove almost 2 hours to play this course and it was just a really frustrating day. I got the impression they were members or regulars there but I can't say that for sure but again simply having someone just ride the course a couple of times would have been nice where we could've said hey can you speed them up or have them let us go through aside from that it's a great course but you do have to hit it well off the tee if you drive it well on the course you can play well and score well but if you're a little erratic with the driver you can post some high numbers

Overall one of the best ive played

This was a really fun course to play for so many reasons. The course conditions were excellent, i couldnt find one thing negative to say about the conditions of the course. Fairways, and greens and bunkers all were in pristine conditions. (Ive not played any better greens all year). the fairway bunkers are placed to make you think about where to hit the ball or whether to be aggressive but they're not terribly penalizing... however greenside bunkers are a bear. some very steep bunkers, while being very narrow means you can find yourself having to get a bunker shot straight up very quickly. The layout is a fun one, in that it gives you alot of options. Seems like a course that a bomber or someone that plots around could each hold their own on. Lots of water on the course and bunkers are strategically placed, to make it a shot makers course, knowing where to hit it, but at the same time many of these same holes offer opportunity to be aggressive if you so choose and be rewarded (but also punished if you dont succeed). I put alot of stock in how many options a course gives you, as far as reachable par 5s as well as long ones, or some short risk/reward par 4s, as well as ones where youre grateful just to make par, for example. Along with course conditions, i think those are some things that make it a "fun" course. Id read alot of reviews that mentioned how nice the people/members were, and wondered how you could tell about the membership, but i will say, i came upon two fivesomes in front of me, while playing as a single (the others who had booked same tt with me on golfnow, apparently got there early and went on themselves) and each group was extremely friendly as they let me play through. I know most people cringe at 5somes, but if its their club and their policy is to allow it, i dont feel i can complain. The next foursome in front of those groups allowed me through quickly also, and even invited me back to play scat game the next weekend. Some courses/pro shops treat you differently if you book through golfnow, i guess because they're not getting as much money from you, but the pro shop guys were as friendly and accommodating as anywhere id been in such cases. Just a really nice experience with this place.

nice course

if you are in this area it's a nice course to play. it's a fun course to play for the average golfer. one thing I loved about the course was there are some challenging holes but some reachable par 5s also for example. I guess you would say it's a good mix of holes. as far as the conditions the course was in pretty good shape and the greens were excellent. there's not much I could complain about as far as the course conditions. I myself was traveling from a little over two hours away to play and though I really like the course I wouldn't say that it's a course worth traveling that far for but if you're in the area it's definitely worth playing and I would play again if I were there. as far as anything else around the golf course I really had no contact with anyone at the course besides the guy in the pro shop who while he wasn't rude he wasn't the least bit friendly I'm not even sure he spoke to us other than to give us the amount that we owed I don't think there was a how you doing or thanks or anything like that. but again no one there was rude or bothersome I just wouldn't call them overly friendly. but again the course itself was a fun course to play and a fair course in that if you play well and hit good shots you can score well on it but if you don't hit good shots you can pay for it

nice course

Wintertime golf, so not much to go on. The course is pretty well maintained as far as the basics go...(tee boxes, fairways, greens...greens were in very good shape, rolled very true... lots of undulation, so i would guess in warm weather they could really cut them and roll them to make them brutal to putt on, but they werent terribly fast this weekend). The course isnt long, and its a little tight in spots, but really believe the greens could be this courses biggest defense. Its a little pricey at the normal rate, but occasionally you can get a really good deal on golfnow. We played for 20 bucks apiece, which is a steal. Sometimes, you can find it for 30, which its worth. The 50 bucks...ughhh, id have a hard time paying.

Average course, nothing special, poor staff

We were driving from a couple of hours away so my review will be slanted slightly based on that. The course, wasnt bad, but nothing special, not worth making a special trip for. The front nine had alot of gimmicky holes as some mountain courses will have. Not enough room to really put some holes, so they squeeze them in with blind shots and such. Some of the greens were rediculous. Im not talking about undulation, but just greens with complete outright hills or banks in them. They were in good shape, just not sure what purpose those greens/designs served. The back nine was more of a regular golf course, and yes had a couple nice holes with really nice views of the mountains. However my biggest complaint would be the staff. I play alot of golf in a lot of places and so you see a little of everything, but the two working in the proshop were about as cold and unfriendly, unwelcoming as anywhere ive played. If youre in the area and get a good deal on golfnow, and just havent played it, go for it. But i wouldnt pay the regular price or make a special trip for it. The course conditions were ok, no real complaints about fairways, or greens or bunkers or such. Just had a lot of silly holes, and very unfriendly staff.

excellent condition

This was our first time playing the river course (had played the highlands previously). First of all the course was in excellent condition, as far as all the basics go (tee boxes, fairways), but the greens had just been punched two days prior to our playing it, so its hard to comment much on those, but i got the impression they were kept in as pristine condition as the rest of the course. I was actually surprised by how much fun the course was to play. I thought it was just pretty flat, back and forth, but it had a lot of subtle details about it that made it interesting. about 13 or 14 of the holes were fairly flat along the river basin, but then for a nice change of pace there were 4 or 5 holes on the backside that went up into the ridges on the backside of the course. Back to the greens, i suspect the greens are the true defense of this course, when they're playing under normal conditions that is. Alot of bunkers guard alot of greens and fairways as well. On the course map, it looks as though water could be a real issue, but while there is lots of water winding throughout the course, its really not a super important issue in most cases with the exceptions of a couple of holes. I would call the course very fair for an average golfer, though again, id suspsect the greens could run up some high scores, but rough isnt brutal, fairways are wide enough. It was just a really nice course to play. As far as the price, the price we got on golfnow was well worth it and then some. Im not sure what the normal price is to play it

Wonderful experience

I rated this course only average value for the money, simply because I think its a little pricey if youre paying the regular rate. However, you can get many good teetimes on golfnow.com, and for those prices, id rate it a good value for the money. We got an extremely good rate, on a hotdeal, so for us it was excellent. Just wanted to clarify the reasons behind the rating.

As far as the course, we played the Highlands course, which on the scorecard seems like a gimmicky/mickey mouse course, as it is extremely short, even from the tips. But we were told by the staff there, (very friendly by the way, the outdoor staff anyway, starter, attendants loading bags, etc.) not to let the yardage fool you. My initial reaction was they were just trying to talk their course up. They were very sincere, we found out. And as you played it, you werent thinking, this is a short hole, or this is all this hole is?? Its very deceiving, and its a shotmakers course. Greens were in good shape, and they were fair, (meaning, the playibility of them, you had to putt well on them, but they werent so difficult that they would ruin your day).

It was a fun course to play, but you had to play it well, regardless of the length of it. My two biggest reccomendations would be, spring for a course book, if youre not playing with someone very familiar with the course (so many doglegs and holes that required placement in a landing area, not knowing the course, made that really difficult, even with a gps). And book teetime somewhere like golfnow where you can get a more affordable rate.

Always a good experience

We play this course maybe 3 or 4 times a year. Weve never had a bad experience here, in any way shape or form. Its always kept in very good condition. Its got really nice facilities, if thats important to you (range, multiple putting greens, bunker practice area) The course has some really nice features and nice, interesting, unique holes, especially the front 9, where the river comes into play several times. It seems to be well run, in the sense that, the staff is friendly but for the most part you dont see or deal with them much. And thats not a bad thing, they get you off on time for your scheduled tee time, and then you generally never deal with them much beyond that. Pace of play, if its an issue, usually is an issue for everyone so its really NOT an issue....its gonna take about everyone longer to play because its a pretty challenging course..... When the greens are mowed, they can be lightning quick, but the last couple of times i played there, they werent quite as fast. Could just be luck of whatever day you happen to be there.

One thing that i did really like, the course pro, saw my girlfriend and i playing, and he was just out riding around the course, and he stopped and asked if he could help her with a couple of things, just a short 3 or 4 minute mini-lesson, because he noticed something she was doing in her swing. And at first, i thought it was because she is absolutely gorgeous, (and it might have something to do with it) , but i noticed he was out riding around, talking to people throughout the day. I just thought that was a cool thing to do. Ive never seen a pro, outside of the clubhouse, at the courses we play locally, unless they were being paid for a lesson. But she is a beginner, and that was just a nice, cool thing of him to do, i thought. And he really helped her.

Im a tough reviewer on price reviewing because where we play, there are tons of golf courses, pretty nice ones, and they're really priced very afforadably, so im kind of spoiled like that. But even if you have to pay full/regular price at this course, id still say its worth it. If you get a discounted rate on golfnow, thats just a bonus.

And for the area its in, or close to, its very easy to get to.

nice course, but overprriced

as far as playing conditions and playibility for a wide range of skill levels, id rate it very good... has some challenges to it, but with a number of tee box options, can be shortened for golfers of lower skill level. it was very well maintained, though its hard to say much about the greens one way or another since they had just been aerified.

the outside staff were very friendly, helpful, while the one inside staff member acted as if i should have been thanking him for my paying them an outrageous price to play the course.

it was a nice course, a fun course to play but ive played courses just as nice and well maintained for much less, so i cant get overly excited about it. i would play the course again but not at the prices they normally charge.
