Has that Caddyshack 2 Vibe and it works

Old country club made public. Fairways, greens and sand traps in good to great shape. Layout is decent with good finishing hole stay left. Number of doglegs. We teed off at 6:46 am but all the staff was helpful and friendly. Now the Caddyshack 2 vibe. Driving range on the short side, but had barrels and other colorful targeting areas. Unfortunately due to concert the next day it was unavailable. There is food/drink truck after certain time starts pumping out the music. You also get drink cart providing free rum shots once each 9. It all works for them and not taking themselves to seriously. If in the area play the course. It's fun place t be and ownership shows different style that Rodney Dangerfield would love. They did advertise blue tooth speakers on the carts and perhaps misunderstanding but did not have one. Go have fund and don't take it seriously you will have some fun.

Old Course Making Comeback at GREAT VALUE

It has been 10 plus years since I played Marywood. Course conditions had deteriorated . Friend said making comeback give it chance. We did. This is old style country club course requires some shot making. It starts as brute in the first 5 holes. Par 5 good shot may hit the water on the right, then 455 brute of pa4, #4 uphill 210 par 3 and then down log par 4 dog leg right. Greens have considerable slope as result green pace is slower. If it wasn't balls would roll back to your feet. Still some work to do on sand traps but coming along. I would play again.

Great Value - tough course

The course plays like links style course. Really important to understand your target lines. GPS would really help the golfer who has not played here before, and you can download the course yardage book to your phone (highly recommended). One of the few courses the fairways were like a sponge. Greens were in excellent shape and when you hit the green the ball stops. Don't plan on hitting in front of the green and the ball rolls on. I'm pretty good putter but I sure struggled on the greens. They run true but have subtle breaks. Best recommendation hit it close and let your playing partners give you gimme.

Hidden Gem

Played this course before number of years ago. First time back. Course was in great shape. Greens ran true. Rollout was amazing. You'd think short of the hole and ball kept running out. Makes chipping a premium. Open to start narrows at times. $44 Sunday morning in June is and excellent deal. Didn't use amenities. But certainly could have used a beer cart. Fortunately not hot more for my golf game.

Bucket list course

My rate was discounted based on stay and play at Lakewood Shores ( play all 4 great value) and during the week. As kid I have vacationed in this area for number of years. I can tell you I never knew there was this kind of evaluation change. This rivals anything you will find on the west side of state. You have the ability to score and get in trouble. It is not exceptionally long. We played gold/white combination and it was all the course we wanted to play at slope around 132 (gold 135/white 127). I can highly recommend playing this course. Excellent GPS units on the carts that yardages were spot one. Tested few with my scope with no difference ended up putting scope back in the bag.

One true links courses in Michigan

Just as matter of prospective I have played in Ireland and Arcadia so now links style course. The course was good condition and has true links style bunkers. We played in light wind which I can say I was thankful. We played the following day at different course with 15 to 30 mph winds. This course would have been a beast in those winds. A couple of issues on the layout. Holes 2 and 17 and 11 and 14 are played as double green. 2nd hole is par three and points you more to the 17 flag which may slow groups down playing 2 and people on are the 17th. The 14th green pushes you way from flag and as result you could find yourself shooting over people on the 11th. One hole the Gold/Blue tees are right next to the green (not that many were playing those tees). In my opinion these items could slow down play. The website has the yardages for traps which was not on our carts. So either out for end of season or no longer printed. Not sure which but you need these for the course to understand where these little pot bunkers (stroke takers) are located. Overall I would play the course and make things a bit easier with the layout. Accommodations were good with adjoining rooms for your groups and wee links play is right behind accommodations so if bet needs to be settled opportunity to play it off.

Nice course - hard rain previous day hurt course

Conflicted about the course. We had a,hard rain hours before playing as result the course was very wet (cart paths were mud puddle to mud puddle. We received excellent stay and play rate (2 nights stay/3 courses $109 fall rate). The course makes it feel tight so it helps to be shot maker. If your sprayer it may not be much fun. This is not to say its tight, just feels that way. The greens have considerable undulation. Putts of 4 to 5 feet you likely only have one break to deal with any longer usually double breaks. My biggest beef is more maintenance and upkeep. Cups were worn out and flags were listing to the side (small investment to correct). The cars had no windshields and we had little rain couple of times (fortunately could drive through trees for protection). Overall I would play this again, but the mgmt needs to make some small investments to improve the course.

Front 9 needs renovation, back 9 was an improvement

The front 9 is old style late 60's early 70's course and back 9 appears to be added later. The greens, fairways and tee boxes were in terrible shape. The greens had significant slope when greens weren't mowed as short. This causes putts to roll off the greens. Tee boxes typically back were nearly bare and one had sink hole in the middle. Renovations are expensive but the front 9 is lost cause and needs some significant updating that maintenance can't do. Rebuild greens, enlarge tee boxes, cart paths to keep carts away from the greens. I would stay away from this course or use as your first warm up. Just don't expect too much. Better yet expect nothing at all.

Nice layout can't go wrong playing

Unlike my experience with Cedar River our pace of play was excellent. We did not have anyone within few tee times of us as we managed as 3 some to play the front in little over 2 hours. Took us little longer on the back mainly because we weren't being pushed and not taking our game to seriously.

Most underrated course at Shanty

This course is not the most challenging. But the course conditions were the best and the green speeds were consistent from green to green. They were extremely fast. If you have a day to play and think the Legend or Cedar River I would give Schuss a try.

Loved the course, a bit beat up and pace of play sucked.

The layout of the course I really enjoyed typical resort northern Michigan golf course. Elevation changes, big greens and larger fairways. We played in late August and the course appears to have too many rounds as it is beat up a bit. My biggest compliant PACE OF PLAY. 5.5 hours. We were advised at the beginning of the round we should take 4.5 hours. Apparently not everyone agreed and the Ranger was on a hole making sure you kept up with the group in front of you. There are some holes that require you to wait until you can see the group in front of you has moved to the green. So perhaps a bell to let someone know you cleared (we were hit into 2 times and as clearing the Par 3's group behind would start firing away). If you haven't played need to play at least once. I would advise going during the week and not on the weekend. We are advised by ranger that typical time to play both Cedar and the Legend is 5 to 6 hours. Note tee times are 10 minutes apart so it's not like they throw too many people on the course at the same time.

Its been while since last played, Glad I came back

As my title say last time I played this course was before GPS in your cars had to use on line maps.
I had wanted to come back to play this course for last couple of years. I wasn't disappointed. From the whites not really long. But those greens will test yours skills. The better shot maker who can place ball below the hole will have a great advantage. The course is challenges your belief in yardages. 1st hole from the tee box looks like Par 4. 360 yards par 4 instead.
For the most part we played good paced front 9. Started to slow on the back. Not sure why since the next group in front of us teed off easily 20 minutes earlier. In the end we played a little over 4 hours for group, that one of us seen once and the others have never played.

Just one thing the staff was outstanding and friendly. From the person at the counter to the rangers on the course.

Group Golfer Deal Steal on this course - Bucket list course

As state we did play under group golf coupon for $30, which was a real bargain. The course to me was two different 9's when it comes to difficulty We played the blue tees for 13 to 24 handicap. The opening 9 seemed a bit easier, only 100 yards shorter than the back 9. The back 9 starts out as brute par 4 399 yards, shortest par 5 with an elevated green with sand trap in front you can't see the green or flag and side sloping green if your on the wrong side you will not stop the ball near the hole, Next par 5 with split fairway. These three holes can sink your round. All the greens have more slope than undulation, being in the below the hole is a premium. Staff is very friendly, club pro took the time to go thru the holes where to and not to play. I gave average on the amenities we did not see the beverage cart until we started the 10th hole and only saw it once more on the back 9, after being advertised cart was on the course. Comment was made group of 16 on back were getting extra attention. Fortunately we purchase something to drink and there are many coolers on the course with water. This should not be reflective of the staff, they all treated everyone well. Just a little misstep not taking into consideration those others on the course and perhaps something to avoid in the future by management. Overall this is must play in Michigan and should be on your bucket list golf courses. It was one of mine and I was not disappointed and neither were others in our group.

Parkland course in the north

First time our group has played Gaylord golf club (note no longer country club or semi private). Course is parkland/country club style course. First 6 holes pretty open not overly difficult. Then you enter the wooded part of the course. If you in the area and looking for nice course to play (lacks the vistas of Treetops) when in the north book a time, you won;t be disappointed. We did not eat at the course but it did have decent beer and liquor selection. The only reason I have it 4 stars was little short on staffing in the dining area to get drink at the turn and one green has some issues the course is trying to recover. We played this as part of golf package the rate provided is per the web site.

Pace of play biggest issue

This not normal for Treetops to have slow pace of play. Course easily played in 4 to 4:15 hours. It took 1 hour to play the first three holes and improved some only after we called the resort, in the end we played in 4 hours 40 minutes which caused us to rush to the Masterpiece. If the ranger had not got the group moving likely would have been over 5 hours. We did have late start due to weather was supposed to 15 minute delay was 45 minutes because the group in front of us couldn't decide on teams and get going. I would like to play this course again with better pace of play instead of hit and wait. Note the amount paid is unknown it was part of package.

Quirky course, premium on second shot

This course is unique/quirky. For the most part your driver and stay in bag other than just a few holes. Many dog legs requiring 150 to 180 yard approach shots up hill. The sand traps need redoing removing rocks. Sand racks were extremely lacking in some cases there were none and certainly wasn't waste area. This is also course that playing the first time could be struggle as it is more of shot makers course. The restaurant at the club is excellent and staff was very good. Overall I would still play again and see if second time changes my appreciation for the course.

Driver remains in the bag

This course was in great condition not having rain for 3 to 4 weeks (rained within the last 24 hours from when we played). You can play with three wood or long iron from the tee box all day and still score. The greens are very challenging with the speed and undulation. Perhaps my opinion is bit bullish since the individual in charge is high school alumni. There are few courses that are challenging like this and from top to bottom staff that was very friendly and helpful. If you'er in area play the course. If you have couple of days Grand Haven Golf club and then Hawks Head in South Haven or Ravines in Saugatuck. You will be challenge with three different styles of golf. After golf check out the breweries in Grand Haven, Holland and Saugatuck area. You wont be disappointed and have great golf weekend.

Not your typical Northern Michigan Course

This course layout is unique to Northern Michigan as it has no elevation changes more typical you would see with Treetops or Otsego. But still great layout and can be hard. There have been some improvements, most noticeable was the 9th hole since we last played. The tree and junk that covered up pretty good part of the hole was trimmed back and down. This made this hole much more playable. Greens ran great the only one that was in below average condition was number 13 looks like it had some mold issues attempting to fix. The only other issue if I recall was the 7th hole. Missed the hole to the left and chipped on the green (typically would have stayed on the green) and as it picked up speed rolled off the green and then rolled down to the water. Not sure what can be done about the right side of the green as it is grass bare but shouldn't run off into place out of play for ball that hits the middle of the green for average non professional player. I guess just don't miss left but don't over compensate and miss right either.

Good Course/Needs Maintenance/Rangers lie

First I like playing Premier very challenging course and excellent layout (second the amount is not correct since we paid past part of package). I would say Management needs to review the sand traps and have relined/repaired. They have large stones in them which too me is unacceptable for course of this quality and with how much they do charge. Second we had an encounter with Ranger saying we were 25 minutes off pace (hole 9) and we were 4 holes behind the next group, in addition there were three groups waiting on number 8 the hole we had just previously played.. Some minor protest by us we continued and sped up our play (which wrecked our game for awhile). After review we looked at our approximate start tee time and 4 hour 35 minute of pace of play we were off pace maybe few minutes. If we used the Ranger's time we were perhaps maybe at most 5 minutes off pace. In regards to the 3 groups waiting on the 8th hole that was false as our second group said no one came up on them when they were teeing off (which would be required if groups stacked up). We also waited for our second group on 18 and no one came on the tee why they were on the green or as we added up scores. We also spoke to group that played the Signature around the same time and received the same information word for word. My recommendation is mark your start of the first ball you hit on your scorecard and when you see them getting after you about pace of play you can in whatever politeness you would like to use tell them to leave you alone. If I play this course again and receive the same treatment I will let the Ranger know to leave and stop bothering us (I may consider slowing down). I may not be very kind with my rebuttal the next time approached by Ranger at Treetops with off pace of play if not off pace.

Tale of two nines

This the first time I played The Lakes course since the early 2000's, which at one time was closed for 3 years as I recall. The time I played it what is the 14 th hole was the 1st. The change also resulted in a new club house. The one issue is their is no driving range and the practice putting green is very small with cups that hadn't been moved (but likely due to the smallish nature). Now the tale of two 9 nines. We elected to play from the Blues. The back nine this was fine. The front 9 mistake. This is true for the 4th hole which is all up hill and blind shot to the fair way if you hit it well. Otherwise it's three shot par 5 at that point. The only other hole that was somewhat sketchy was #9 which could be due to the amount of rain. From about 140 yards out no carts and the group was very soft. Overall still nice layout. Just pick your tee wisely and perhaps consider moving up for the front side or at least #4.
