Decent but gone down hill

The course is a nice design with a nice balance of challenge and forgiveness. Unfortunately, the condition has slipped since I first played it 5 or 6 years ago.

Tee boxes are fine, fairways are ok but the greens are in great shape. Greens complexes are well designed and can be tricky. They roll fantastic!

What needs work? Fairways are sparse for this time of year. Everything past the first cut has been neglected. The carts are dated and the oaths need a complete overhaul. Lots of rough transitions from the path to grass. It would be easy to put up some temporary fence (ropes) to keep traffic from wearing these areas out. On top of that, they are eroded from runoff.

Completely playable and fun. They just need to spend a little money and time getting things in better shape.

First grass course in AZ!

I’m a nerd. Had to play it when I read that it was the first grass course in AZ. I definitely recommend it but manage your expectations. The facilities are minimal, including the practice area. It is an open, tree lined course with plenty of sand and a little water. It was well maintained and definitely a value.

Good course but very sandy greens. Always a solid choice.

Quite a gem!

Let me start with the boring stuff. The amenities were average. The clubhouse offers a pro shop, restaurant, etc. but nothing special. Practice area is minimal with a small driving range (irons only), thin grass and a small chipping area.

Now for the goods! The layout is a total gem, discreetly meandering through a nice neighborhood. You never feel crowder by houses. It has some of the best elevation changes I have seen this close to Phoenix. This creates some unique, if not tricked up, holes and all the challenges that go with them.

The condition was solid. There is plenty of grass from tee to green. One negative was the sand on the greens. However, I played with course regulars and they assured me this was unusual and that the greens are generally very nice.

All-in-all a great course that I would recommend playing!

Could be fantastic

The course layout is great. A little bit of everything and course knowledge helps. Greens complexes are sweet and can be tricky.

Unfortunately, like any muni, it is run on a slim budget. The cart paths are terrible and not much in the way of amenities. Grass is fair throughout but has some sketchy areas. So close but yet so far from being top notch.

Bottom line... it’s a great value golf course with lots of potential. I recommend playing it but it’s not likely to become your go-to course.

Solid Course

Pretty straight forward layout. Condition was good from tee to green. Sand traps could use some refreshing but nothing too bad.

Nice course but SLOW!

From tee to green the conditions were good. Well maintained and a fun layout. Plenty of challenge from the blue tees at about 6,500 yds.

I only have two negative comments. First was the slow play. They booked over 270 players which caused a 6 hour round. This was very frustrating. Secondly, the sand traps were basically dirt and rocks. Thankfully, I only had to deal with the sand( or lack of) twice but my playing partners were frustrated all day.

A last resort

This was the o Ly course that had an opening for a threesome at the specific time we needed. I now know why.

Like all the other reviews... thin grass, greens like molasses, etc.

My real complaint is that they should have indicated the course conditions in advance. There is no way I would have paid $100 to play a course like this!!

Decent course, decent shape... It's just not the best in the area.

Pace of play was great and I saw a lot of kids in the practice area. It seems like a good place for families. I am sure it is popular with all the residences in the area.

The greens are in good but not great shape. The tee boxes are in need of improvement. Several were un-even and were struggling to grow grass. The weather has been too good for that! Cutting some trees may help but...

The fairways are also in decent shape but have a few rough areas.

The layout is fine but it is a true neighborhood golf course. I definitely would not walk. It is pretty tight for high handicappers but not overwhelmingly difficult either.

Great course for the money!

I was shocked! I had played South Hampton about two years ago in a scramble and found it to be boring. I took relatives that were in town for the holidays and chose S. Hampton for the relative openness of the course.

I cannot get over of the condition. From tee to green it was very well maintained!!!!!!!

The pace of play was a bit slow due to the frost delay and a slow group in front of us. The "Course Advisor" spoke to them and they picked up the pace.

It is an open layout but does have enough challenges to entertain a low-handicap golfer.

It was perfect for the occasion!!!!
