Plum Creek Golf Club
Played On 07/20/2016Poor Management & Conditions
This course has really declined. The pace of play has become terrible. Today, I played two and a half hours to cover 9 holes. There was an extremely slow foursome in front of us and they would not allow us to play through. When we made the turn with the chance to jump ahead, we found several additional foursomes had decided to start from the the 10th hole! This is the big problem. There is no on-course marshal and there are several "frequent" players who ignore all the rules. They drive carts all over the place tearing up the course, have no respect for other players, and no respect for the staff.
In addition, the condition of the course continues to get worse. The greens are terrible landmines of ball marks.
Management tries to maximize the number of players on the course and this does not help the pace or the conditions.
I bought a membership at the course this year but I won't be back next year.
Pebble Brook Golf Club - South Course
Played On 05/15/2015Bunkers Under Repair
This is a nice course and one I play frequently. It is relatively open, so if you scatter off the tee you will have a good opportunity to find your ball and get it to the green without too much of a penalty. The ability to work the ball is helpful on a few holes.
The bunkers on the North course are currently being repaired or rebuilt. I talked with a couple of employees in the club house and they said the effort is to flatten the bunkers out since it is difficult to maintain them in the current configuration. This makes many bunkers unplayable for the time being and it will likely take a good year before they are back in good shape.
The Trophy Club
Played On 08/24/2014A good Midwest Links style course
Trophy Club is one of my frequently visited courses. It offers a good challenge, a good pace, and the course is almost always in really good condition. There is a quality mix of risk/reward shots and the course challenges you to think about how you want to play the holes. For Indiana, there are good elevation changes and the water comes into play on several holes. Some great rates are available through golf now. The different tee options actually make the course play a little different which is nice. The course is at least 5 strokes tougher with a 10 mph wind. At 15 mph, it can become a monster. The greens are fast a roll true.
The only issues I have are that the bunkers are hit and miss on maintenance (a Midwest public course problem!). The carts are gas and noisy. Food and beverage on the course are only available during peak times. The traffic noise from I-65 also ruins the ambiance on some holes.
Still, one of my favorite courses for the money in Indianapolis. Comparable to Purgatory.
The Fort Golf Resort
Played On 6/23/2013Very Good Indianapolis Course
This is one of the best designed courses in Indiana. Tee to green the course is in great shape. The greens were average on the day we played and need some attention. There were many unrepaired ball marks and signs of use.
Winding Ridge Golf Club
Played On 5/26/2013Poor condition
The course looks nice from a distance, but closer examination reveals a host of issues. The fairways have large areas of dead spots as do the greens. The flags were positioned to reduce the impact of the dead spots in the green, but this is a poor solution. The water hazards are sometimes oddly placed, like holes 6 and 7, and poorly marked. There are large power lines clouding the views on the front 9.
My cart stopped functioning properly on the 3rd hole and the staff was rather indifferent. I managed to nurse it through the from 9 and then change carts at the turn.
The rough is spotty and there was a load of grass clippings to deal with.
If you are looking to play nine, the back is a much better play than the front.
