A little drive but worth it!!!

I had golfed this course a few years ago with my golf partner. Recently had the desire(with a good price on golfnow) to make the 45 minute drive west to the Chelsea mi area. Played it two Saturdays in row.First with another couple and the next with my brother, This is a NICE course. The layout is fair and challenging from the white or blue tees and then there are the black for the young big hitters. The weather both Saturdays was perfect. The staff was friendly and cordial. The first week we played right at 4 hours..not bad.The second Saturday it was 4.5 hours. The course does not set a pace of play standard time..Our early pm tee time was just after an outing so we heard. We thought that would allow for a FAST pace with only a few groups out before us at 1...There was no ranger to monitor...but it did seem at least 1 foursome and maybe 2 in front set a bit of a slower pace than what one might expect.,,this seemed to be due to a rather slow pre shot routine by SOME of those we could see in front of us. All in all the nice weather mitigated some of this additional time.My only slight on this facility are the sand traps...they were a little below average in that with a little time and new fresh sand it would be that much more enjoyable. It was and is worth the drive from metro Detroit area to experience a good course in farm country

OUTSTANDING!!!!!!!!!!!!

Last stop on a 4 day golf trip with my wife thru PA/Ohio...Got a hot deal on golfnow for an 1pm tee time on a tuesday. We got there way early and enjoyed the ambience of a 1st class clubhouse along with a bag of warm up balls. The range was empty and we felt we had the place to ourselves. The starter indicated we could go whenever we were ready instead of waiting till 1..THANK YOU!! The weather was a chamber of commerce day!! sunny..light breeze...temps in low 80's..it does not get any better!!..We had a 4 some in front of us but they played at a good pace and we never had much of a wait on any of the holes...the scenery proved to be a nice distraction(nice rolling hills of SE ohio). The course will accommodate ALL skill levels...as a senior I played the whites and found them to match well to my skill level. This course is top shelf as conditions from tee to green (inc sand traps) was stellar!!!Great fairways and pristine greens made for a day that I wish I could replicate more often..Overall a first class operation including great food and beer that we decided to partake in so that we would not have to leave!!..If you are in the Zanesville area this is a Must do ...just wish it was not a 4 hour drive from my home in Michigan

Excellent course!!

Played this course on an early saturday morning golf now deal. It was the first time for me and my golf partner. We arrived about 45 minutes early and the starter said we would be paired up with another twosome. After a few minutes putting he asked if we wanted to play as a twosome and go a bit early since they had a few "gaps" in the tee times.Off we went...the pace of play on the card is 4:30 I believe...we ended up finishing at right about 4 hours...GREAT!! The greens were reasonably fast and challenging to putt on...some of the traps could use a little love and new sand since there was a bit of stones/pebbles in alot of them. Not the worst I have seen but not the best either...probably about average in condition. There is a bit of rolling topography to the course which adds to the enjoyment of this course... We enjoyed the experience and hope to play there again soon!! Keep up the good work and the welcoming attitudes

NICE COURSE!!!

Early Spring golf in Michigan is always a gamble ..on this day it there was a 1 to 2 club wind hat had to be taken into account. I have played this course in several outings over the years so I was a bit familiar with the layout. We played west to east since it is a course with 3 nine hole courses. The guys in the clubhouse and the starter were very cordial and friendly. The conditions were excellent!! the greens were FAST and rolled well. Even though it has been a bit wet this season...I was amazed that balls that hit the green on the fly did not leave any kind of ball mark. The greens were hard and fast but somehow the shots at this time did not just bounce off. Also the traps had NICE sand and were great to hit out of on the periodic errant shot.Hope they continue to keep ths course in this kind of condition as I hope to golf there again

GREAT COURSE ......TERRIBLE PACE!!

Got a great hot deal on golf now and we Played as a 3 some mid day on a nice fall Saturday. We then were matched up with a single to make a fourth...nice guy and we enjoyed the new company... ....started pretty much on time however 3 foursomes were stacked up and were starting on the 1st hole which is a par 5 so some space started to open or so we thought. It was pretty much a start and stop day...all the rest of the afternoon for 18 holes....turned out we finished about 6:20..Almost 5.5 hours!!! have played in golf outings that got done quicker!!!....course pace of play is 4:30..so it was a LONG afternoon to say the least. The ranger riding around said the SLOW play was a result of a few foursomes a few holes ahead of us that was causing the slow down and that was near hole 6 or 7...so it seems like he was unable to light a fire under them to move things along faster... The saving grace was that the weather was nice and the course was in great shape...greens rolled fast and true even though you could still see some healing from fairly recent aeration....Would recommend...just hope that golfers in front of you keep moving at least at the course minimum pace of play

NICE COURSE!!!!

This was a 3rd course we played on a couples trip to the Kalamazoo area. The weather was perfect...We were warmly greeted by the course staff and told we could start a bit earlier than our scheduled tee time. Who would have thought the kalamazoo area had some decent elevation changes and therefore made for some interesting golf holes. We followed several groups of senior gentlemen. Pace of play was decent and think we finished in a little over 4 hours. The course was in great shape with just some recent "clumping" from mowed grass in some areas.Greens were good and rolled true..medium speed...not super fast but I would consider typical for most public courses. The rough was cut a bit higher and offered a challenge from time to time to find a ball that was only a few feet off the fairway...Would be a nice "visual" course to play when the colors change in the fall..though the falling leaves would make finding golf balls even harder...A must play if you ever find yourself in the Kalamazoo area

EXCELLENT COURSE!!

Played this course on a sunday afternoon with a good HOT DEAL on Golfnow. We were in the area (kalamazoo,Mi) for a 3 day golf vacation with another couple. Have stayed and played the other gull lake courses (at other times) and was always impressed with the overall course conditions of their other courses. This time was no different...perfect weather and think we played it in a little more than 4 hours..not bad for a weekend in afternoon in the middle of the day. This course is a challenge as it is NARROW!! Greens were in good shape and cut for a moderate speed...not lighting quick...but were also not shaggy slow.... they were nice to putt on. Rough was cut a little high..not a major issue other than finding a ball at times was tough unless you were right on top of it...not a negative..just an observation.Sand traps were decent...only remember being in one all day so not so bad from that perspective. Hope to play this course again when in that area of the state...clubhouse assistants were very pleasant andmade us feel like they appreciated our choosing to play the course

WORTH THE TRIP

Very Nice course overall. Warmup range included a bunker area to practice those shots for those so inclined.Starter kept things rolling right on schedule so play for a Saturday was slightly better than the recommended time, Greens seemed to be pretty scarred...mostly from those who can't seem to properly repair their ballmarks bit the greens seemed quick and rolled true..would play again and hope to again yet this season

SO MUCH POTENTIAL

The front 9 is wide open and fairly flat...the back 9 is the opposite..narrower and much more hilly. There are a number of blind shots on the back. The overall conditons a bit less than than one would hope for, The fairways and rough are a bit weedy with not much difference between the two.Greens were nice and challenging to putt,,,quite a few were a bit like a "turtleback" in shape and a guy in the clubhouse said try and stay below the hole and those words were spot on as some greens one could not stop the ball anywhere near the hole due to the slope.I believe a hospital owns this property and uses some of the revenue to help their research efforts.I am sure the conditions are a result of minimum effort since my opinion would be that less weeds and differing grass heights would necessitate more time and attention...(ie. money) so that would detract from the funds going to research..So with a golfnow price the course is a good value,,just don't set your expectations to high

mountain golf at its best

The day we played this course it had rained several days prior and the day we had a tee time. Got a good price on golfnow and the rain had actually stopped a few hours before our tee time. The skies were grey and looked threatening so the course had a cart path only policy for that day. We only had a group of 8 or so guys start in front of us but they were nice enough to let me and my wife play through so that we were not on their heels the whole round. Once we got going it was UNBELIEVEABLE!! Not a flat spot on this course. If you like elevation you will love this course!! My wife loved the elevated tees but hated the long walks UP the fairways due to the cart path only stipulation..turned out it was a good amount of steps according to her fitbit. The course was fair and was a bit challenging (hard to find a flat spot on any fairway)especially playing it for the first time. Greens were quick and rolled true and was a treat to play...drove 4 hours from Michigan and I will say it rivals some of the nice courses northern Michigan has to offer(less the dated facilities). Sand traps could use a little love(noticeable stones and small gravel..rough was deep but not overly excessive) and the club house facilities were also a bit long in the tooth. But since it is a State of ohio facility and state budgets these days it is not hard to understand.Hope to play here again in the not to distant future

Great old track

Got a great HOT DEAL for 8 AM on a Saturday. Frost on the greens delayed golf for about an hour.As a 3 some we were 2nd off the tee.The starting 4 some set a blazing pace.We saw them either driving away from a hole OR they were gone when we reached the tee box. As a 3 some and one being my wife we played 18 in 3 hours. We were loading up the car at noon even after starting at 9...AMAZING for Saturday golf...Friendly staff and the greens were perfect... bit on the faster side when compared with a municipal Livonia course the night before that were SLOOOOOW. Wish golf could be played that fast all the time..hope to get back out to Chemung a lot nore though out this season

Hidden Gem

First time play for me and my wife. Great Fall weather complimented by friendly accommodating staff. We were allowed to play almost an hour before our scheduled tee time(due to a open afternoon tee time schedule...lucky us!!)..We were able to play the front none in about 1hr45min..back nine we caught a 4 some that slowed us down slightly. We still finished our 18 hole round in 3hr40min..under the pace set at the course of 2:05 per nine.As a senior I played from the blue tees but I could see that the golds/black could offer a good challenge to the younger generation.... Course had been aerated recently so the greens were a bit bumpy but were healing.... it is that time of the season. Some of the nicest sandtraps I have seen this season...fine white sand. Was not in any of them surprisingly...just observed while walking toward the greens.Great rate thru golfnow for a Saturday afternoon. Hope to play here again soon

Off the beaten path but worth it!!!!

Took a detour off the I-75 beaten path on a trip up to Petosky and it was worth the hour diversion.Played the course on a weds in July on a golfnow hot deal for 35.00.It was well worth that for a course that was in excellent condition.Thought there would be more holes with "elevation"...there were some...just not as many as I had hoped for such as some of the courses in Gaylord have...not a negative by any stretch. The course from tee to green was immaculate.Pace of play was just under 4 hrs on a perfect july afternoon...traps were better than most but not primo...some small rocks/pebbles..just a minor annoyance more than anything,,still give it 5 stars in spite of the sand conditions. If your are in northern Michigan and can get a hotdeal price you will not be dissapointed

Pristine course

WOW...First time golfing this course....nice well maintained Oakland county course.Friendly staff and cordial ranger who kept a good eye on the pace of play.He allowed us to start a little early while a prior 4 some waited for some of their group to show up.Once we got underway played as a 3 some and only had a few holes waiting on the group in front. We did the 18 in 4 hours and the course time on the card is 4.5 hours.Deer/turkey/and the usual rabbits and squirrels were noted during out round. This is a course we will play more in the future for sure.Overall the course from practice areas and tee to green including bunkers were excellent

GREAT COURSE!!!!

This is a 1st class course with topography that is unique to this part of Michigan. Course feels like it up in Gaylord with a great layout. Since some holes are roped off (no carts) the walk to your ball can be a bit of a hike(tip....keep your ball on these holes to an area closer to the cart path...lol...good luck)...course offers all abilities a challenge...try it..you'll like it

Great Track!!! other than SLOOOOOW play!!!

First time playing this course on a late sat afternoon tee time.Nice club house and attractive setting in the Ann Arbor area.Playing this course is like throwing darts...small greens so this is a shot makers course from ANY tee...and the tips are some 6900 yards so this course can accommodate all skill levels.Seems like there was an outing of some sort earlier in the day that MAY have slowed things down for most of the day...we started at 4pm and did not finish till 9...so 5 hours was a bit long(course recommends 4.5 hrs) but the weather was ideal so it was not quite as annoying. The sand traps on this course were exceptional...nice fine white sand with hardly a pebble/stone...compared with others in around here these were tour quality!! Only in 2 of them but they were fun to blast out of...Hope to do this one again with a bit faster play in the 4- 4.5 hour range...an Arthur Hills course that does not disappoint!!

GREAT POTENTIAL!!!!!!!!!!

Played this on a tues as the last day of a 3 day early May golf trip with my wife and another couple.Things looked so promising starting out off #1.. Driving up a sign said the #1 public course in KY..(MAYBE A FEW YEARS AGO) .I would have given this course a 5 star rating EXCEPT the bunkers were so evergrown with weeds/pebbles/stones that we played it as if no bunkers existed.I was only in a couple during the round but looking at them all we could do is shake our heads in disbelief....spend a liitle time and money on these things and the course is FANTASTIC!! Some really nice elevation changes and challenging holes/shots.....PLEASE FIX the bunkers to the same caliber as the rest of the course...Also a few porta potties could also help (especially for females when nature calls) A diamond in the rough in my opinion

WOW!!!! not a flat spot on this course

Played this on a Monday with a hot deal from golf now and could not be more pleased!! Course was in great shape...bunkers could use a little love but not awfull...Set around some beautiful Kentucky hills with some just as amazing residential homes. The only negative I could give this place is that the outhouses (when mother nature calls) we pretty rank. Extra balls would be a good idea since the first cut of rough and then the "real rough" just seems to swallow the balls and finding them is somewhat of a challenge...but worth the time out in this beautiful area of KY...Hope to get down there again from Michigan soon even with a 5 + hour drive...you wont be disappointed

Great track!!! A must do if you are around Dayton

Played this on a Sunday(noon) on the way down to Lexington KY as part of a 3 day golf trip with my golf partner and our wives. The weather was excellent and the course was in great condition(including the bunkers)Always tough playing a course for the first time, however, it probably wont be my last. Bring extra balls as even good shots that are just off the fairway "seem " to just disappear at times until you are right on top of them..Great way to break up a 5 hour car ride
