About

There is nothing I enjoy more than discovering an out of the way course for an early morning round.

I have been playing Thendara for almost 20 years during visits to Old Forge to stay with family friends. I assumed that most golfers in the Adirondacks know about the course but realized it had no reviews on Golf Advisor. I can't recommend the course enough. It is always in spectacular condition and boasts two completely distinct 9's which are each challenging in their own right. The front 9 is a Donald Ross design that is fairly open but with very tough greens. The contours on holes 1, 7, and 9 are diabolical and a 2 putt is victory. The back 9 meanders through the woods with views of the Moose River and requires more accuracy off the tee. The pro, Rich Chapman, always has a smile on his face and the staff is welcoming. I have played 3 other course in the Central Adirondacks and Thendara clearly stands out as the top place to play.

Well worth a play.

I had the opportunity yesterday to play Tanglewood Manor for the first time and it was a terrific experience. A member of the family who owns the course greeted me in the pro shop and welcomed me to tee off early. The course has a wonderful parkland style feel with a good amount of elevation change. With a slope of 122 from the back tees it is quite open and there is no tricky or quirky holes. It was in superb condition especially for this early in the year with the greens and surrounding areas well manicured. The greens are large which can lead to tough 40 plus foot putts. #18 is by far the toughest hole at 549 yards uphill. Take the hour to drive from Philly or Baltimore for a pleasant round at a good value. Bonus: I am a scorecard nerd and it is an old school, small card with a simple layout and no advertising that is worth keeping.

Potomac ridge

I have played here once before and did not have high expectations but it was a good deal on Golfnow for about $20 and close to work. The pro seemed genuinely annoyed I had used Golfnow and said it was a "trade" time and he got no $ for it. He literally watched his watch to make sure I teed off exactly at my tee time even though there was 6 cars in the lot and nobody on the first couple of holes. I was pleasantly surprised with the greens on the front but they absolutely soaked the greens on the back to the point that there was basically casual water on the greens.
