Worth the drive

Located on the North shore of Lake Marion course is about an hour drive but well worth the trip. Fairway grass was dormant but well cut, rough was dormant and cut just enough to make finding the short grass meaningful. Between loose leave and light brown rough , balls in the rough were sometimes hard to find. Green were in good shape, rolled true and were on the fast side. Staff was very friendly.. Thoroughly enjoyed the round. This is a course that I want to go back to when things are green and growing.

Delivers every trip

Thiss course delivers time after time.. Weather was heavy fog at tee off. Ground was wet with fog/dew but no rain. Literally had to hit ball and then go down line to find ball. Lucky I do not hit it far but usually straight. Fog persisted through first seven holes then good sun. Adds a new challenge. Course was in really good shape. Winter grass has come in nicely on fairways. Greens were in great shape without dead spots or weeds and rolled true. Course was very uncrowded when I started around 9:30 and did get busier later, but I was in front of the crowd . Never caught up with anyone nor was I caught from behind. Judging from observations after round, do not feel pace of play was an issue even later in the day. Overall a beautiful course and, eventually, a beautiful day.

Consistant quality

Played Black Robin and Burn Kill nines this time around. This course actually has one more nine, Oak Forest, which I did not play this trip. That is one of the strongest points,it seems like you always get always different look. The course is usually in good playable condition with nice greens and good fairways. This trip, grass is still dormant in the fairways and they are still soft from recent rains. In the winter the dormant grass does not suck the moisture out of the ground like it does in the summer. Sometime sun alone is insufficient for a fast dry. Overall though the course was in good shape. Staff was, as usual, very friendly and responsive to needs. Course itself has a reasonable level of difficulty for the average golfer. A little of everything, water carries, marsh in the way, and a few bunkers that jump up and bite you and length. I enjoy it. This course is a true municipal course that gives back to the residents through support of programs like First Tee, Drive,Pitch and Putt, PGA Hope for Veterans, High School and College support and various leagues.

Always delivers

Course was in great shape. Unlike some local courses, greens ame through winter in great shape. Just off early summer aeration, about three weeks ago, and coming in nicely. Course is always well maintained. Fairways long and generous. Usually see wildlife, hawks, deer, wading birds and the occasional small gator. Staff is always helpful.

Always delivers

Played Burn Kill and Black Robin 9's. Did not play Oak Forest. One of the strengths of this course is having three nines. Never know which two you will use or in which order. Adds variety. Course was is great shape tee to green. Staff is super. Bar and restaurant are top knotch and full service. As the review title says, this course "always delivers".

Pleasurable experence

This course, which I have played many times , always seems to deliver. The conditions are always good, the greens well maintained and the staff friendly and helpful. Having three 9''s is a bonus as you often get a different look depending on which two you play and in what order. Nearby houses do not impact on play. Nature is always evident. Just an all around good expierence and good value.

Scenic interlude

The course is a pleasant break from the hustle and bustle of Mt Pleasant and Charleston with views of the Charleston harbor approaches, the new bridge and Fort Sumpter. Course is in good shape overall, fairway grass is still dormant, and with no recent rain, roll and bounce are quite noticeable. Greens have winter grass and are in good condition with predictable roll and speed. Wind is often a factor, especially on the holes along the beach. The par three island in the marsh 17th is always a challenge for me. Though the course was busy, our foursome still managed to finish the round in four hours.

Challenging

One of the more challenging courses we have played. Get the yardage book, it's free and almost a necessity. Much water, some really narrow fairways and pine/palmetto jungle. Many fairways have jungle on one side and water on the other. Accuracy a premium over distance. Some fairways have undulations and many feed towards hazards if you push the sides. We lost more balls than usual. If you tend to hit away from the water, the jungle waits. Greens are in good shape and fairly fast with contours. Pace of play was good, especially for a Saturday morning with good weather. Thoroughly enjoyed the round.

nice new gereens and lots of water

Facilities top notch - putting green, chipping area, full size GPS in all golf carts - the only lack is a driving range, although they do have a netted hitting enclosure. The White tees play around 5500 - the blues (which used to be the whites) play a little over 6200. The course was in great shape. Tee boxes in good shape and well placed. Fairways were dry and well kept with good grass and not too demanding rough. Greens were beautiful - brand new this spring. The seams in the new greens have meshed nicely and have the consistency of a quality carpet. Putts are true and predictable. Course has quite a bit of water in-play or near in-play especially on the back nine. Two of the four par threes have forced carries over water - very pretty holes. Lots of wildlife, saw a couple hawks, many wading birds and more than a couple alligators.

Challenging course with well maintained fairways and greens

Enjoyed this course, fairways, tee boxes and greens were in great condition. Staff was freindly. Played during the week early in AM and were not rushed at all. Very comfortable pace. Would have been playing forward but our two playing pardners who were the ones who knew the course were playing from whites. Some houses but the course plays away from them. Very scenic. Course offers some good challenges. A couple par threes with forced carries over waste areas/marsh were particularily memorable. I've put this course on my list as a "must" to play again next time I'm in area.

Good value now and should be better in summer.

Course is well layed out among trees and houses. Adjacent properties are positioned such that they veer away from lines of fire. No pictures on the scorecard, study the picture at each tee or maybe they have a yardage book that I did not get. Plenty of water requiring thoughtfull approaches. Several greens had water adjacent and a couple had front slopes to water. Playing end of January, fairways were mostly brown with litle nap and they were pretty dry. Some fairways had mogul like structure in places resulting in other than a flat lie. Most greens were very good and a few were in reasonable shape with some rough spots. Overall, the greens, like the fairways, had little nap. Some overseeding on greens was apparant. Greens were damp from recent watering. Puts were fast but seemed to roll true. Fairways should lush up once the weather warms. Pretty course overall with quite a few wading birds and turtles in ponds.

Course was in excellent shape, staying in the short grass was well rewarded.

Facility is 27 holes (three nines). We played Oak Forest and Burn Kill (other nine is Black Robin) from whites. Course was in excellent shape, staying in short grass was rewarded as rough was brown, a little knappy and just long enough to hide balls, especially when there were fallen leaves in area. Pace of play was good but we were a afternoon twosome with two's ahead and behind us. Greens, though turning brown were soft, fast and smooth and putted true. The biggest challenge for me was length, with only some water to contend with. Houses were along the course in some areas but are set well back and away from probable miss-hit locations. Overall an excellent course. Will play again.
