The Valley at Eastport Golf Club
Played On 09/03/2015Nice course to work out your short game kinks
Played as last tee time of mid morning group of times. Course plays short for those who drive the ball well but accuracy is key to scoring well on this course. If pace of play had been better would have earned a bit higher rating. Staff was generally friendly with some covering multiple positions. Wife really enjoyed the course since she had much shorter course to deal with.
Marlton Golf Club
Played On 08/02/2015Back after a number of years and sad things have slipped a bit
Arranged a 9 AM tee time at Hot Deal price which goes a LONG way in helping hold up overall rating. Course was basically wide open which allowed for a sub 3 hr round which was also a BIG plus.
Played here several years back and found the course in much better overall shape back then vs. this round. A majority of the tee boxes need attention as well as almost all of the greens. My #1 pet peeve and indicator of how well a course is doing is checking green conditions for unfixed ball marks. At courses that are sliding downward, you usually find a lack of caring by players in fixing their ball marks and on the course today, the amount of ones I personally fixed other than my own was APPALLING! Have NEVER seen so many MASSIVE ball marks in all my years of playing. (Come on folks, 10 seconds worth of effort goes a a long way) Despite ball damages, greens were still fast but rolls were an absolute potshot.
Fairways were in decent shape for the most part with some weeds evident. What makes me sad is that the overall course layout and changes in elevation make this course visually attractive and challenging.
LAST NOTE: Was told course was under 90 degree cart rule when we signed in but witnessed players who teed off before us blatantly disregarding this rule. Saw some tracks that actually rolled all the way up to the fringe of the putting green in some places. (The joys of morning dew providing evidence...) Once again, a lack of respect by the players speaks volumes. Marshals/Rangers to enforce rules???
Magnolia/Dogwood at Brunswick Plantation & Golf Links
Played On 07/23/2015Great Course at a great price
Played on short notice on Hot Deal...Have played several other courses in area with mixed emotions but REALLY liked this one. Course had just enough challenge to keep me fully engaged while not being overly abusive to my wife who joined me on the round.
Course layout was very nice with good conditions on both of the nine hole layouts we got to play that day. (Magnolia & Dogwood)
Nice 19th hole bar/grill area although we didn't get to enjoy it after round due to other commitments.
Will definitely return later this year with friends coming in from out of state.
Brierwood Golf Club
Played On 07/02/2015Return to Brierwood after a long hiatuis
Arrived to play at 3 PM at a GREAT rate but needed help regarding overall booking. Beth quickly provided a rain check for pre-paid player that had come down ill. (BIG KUDOS...was really happy to see customer service not just "Sorry...too bad" that has happened before to me) I'll definitely return to use and will bring friends!
Jumped into cart and started my round and was immediately pleased by the overall condition of the course. While some tee boxes need a bit of work, this is where you TEE the ball up so didn't faze me much. Had played the day before at a different local course that had substantially WORSE conditions (tee boxes, fairways & greens).
While the course is not the most difficult to play, it does provide the average golfer the ability to PLAY, not worry about "what's over the next knoll that I didn't realize would kill my score" you get sometimes at a course you've never played.
Endured a couple of heavy showers the front nine but still played side in just under 1.25 hrs. Course layout made nice loop back through development with homes set back away from the fairways, not crowding right up into line of play like other courses I've played in the area.
Back nine is a bit more scenic, with some nice water views on a number of holes. Finished round in just under 2:45 hrs.
After round, went to renovated clubhouse area where I had a couple brews with some patrons who have been coming to Brierwood for a number of years. Since it was mid-week, grill had closed by time I got in but no big deal. They explained how the course had recently been bought by investors who had done a lot to bring the facility back to "life". Enjoyed getting a bigger picture view from a locals perspective.
Will gladly come back to play this course again. Would be a perfect place to bring a newer player or significant other who'd just like to play some golf without a lot of drama.
Hope to see Beth and her staff again soon!
NIce settings/staff but much else to be desired
Got great rate on GolfNow and check-in went smoothly. Spoke with RJ in pro-shop at length and enjoyed the interaction she provided us. Also had a really good chat with the starter who gave us a few pointers for the first couple of holes.
Overall the course provides a LOT of challenges and risk/rewards to the golfer. However, a couple of glaring items marred our experience.
1. Course layout is less than ideal. While I could understand wanting to maximize challenges and views, the meandering through the development was tiring.
2. Course/green conditions were less than great. Lots of patchy spots in the fairways, bare tee boxes etc. Greens were "interesting"...most were fairly small in size and despite my best efforts to leave a ball mark to repair, I had no luck. (Despite having a myriad of towering wedge shots into the middle of the greens from approx 100 yds)
3. No food/beverages except at main clubhouse. Thought building near 10th green was a snack bar but just bathrooms. Didn't have a food/beverage cart on the course. Was relieved to find some old peanut butter crackers in my bag...we were starving before finishing.
18th is a great ending hole with a picturesque finish but wouldn't convince me to hurry back right at this point.
White Plains Golf Course
Played On 05/29/2015Has improved over the spring
Had previously played here about a month prior and front 9 conditions were abysmal. Only came back due to crazy cheap deal from Golf Now for 18 w/cart. Was pleasantly pleased to find the course in MUCH better shape than last visit. Know that some of their past regular players have bolted due to the inclusion of soccer golf being added to front 9 but didn't encounter one out on course this day. Greens were in good shape. Will be back particularily if I can get one of those great prices again because course is closest option for me and work can be unrelenting at times.
Lake Presidential Golf Club
Played On 05/25/2015Bring your "A" game...or else!
Very lush course set-up but you better eat your breakfast before you play or this course could each your lunch. Challenging from the even the white tee boxes, this course will make you work for every par. 18th tee box over the lake can intimidate even a seasoned golfer who doesn't consistently drive 250+.
Wish that they had had more food available at the turn without having to go into the club house.
Was a lot of fun to play but also could hurt your handicap/ego pretty quickly ha-ha.
The Rockland Farm Course at Shenandoah Valley
Played On 05/16/2015Great Price, Nice course
Jumped on great price deal for impromptu round of golf with wife. $28 for both rounds with cart!! Even if we had only gotten in 9 holes, this was a killer deal. Course was in good condition though rough was REALLY deep at some junctures on the course to the point where we found a slew of balls just a few feet out of the fairways. Seems to be a locals course based on clientele. Was disappointed though in the snack bar as service was pretty slow.
Highly advocate getting in on the special rates since it's almost impossible to play for less anywhere in the VA/WV/MD/ areas.
Thanks for the review! We're glad you enjoyed the course and we hope to see you back soon!
