So-so

Incredible layout, difficult course. Staff is all very friendly and accommodating. Conditions were very disappointing, greens had innumerable ball marks and interfered with putts, fairways had rough spots. Took around 6 hours to play 18 and I nearly missed my flight out of Phoenix. I was between playing at Troon and TPC Stadium and several people recommended Troon. I expected better overall. Conditions might be better later in the year?

Pickelt11,
Thanks for playing Troon North. Sorry Troon North didn't meet all your expectations. We did have a busy day and our rounds were behind our normal pace of 4:24. We were monitoring pace all the day. GPS lets us know that no rounds were over 5 hours. Our Pinnacle course has had his share of play with one course closed this summer and the long hot summer has taken a toll, but hope to have you out again for another try.

Nice layout

I learned to play on this course and have seen it go through several owners/managers. The course has very interesting hole layouts and unique designs. Very fun play. Greens were the best they have been in years. The new management has put real money and effort into improving the course. Bunkers still need attention. It's an inexpensive round and if you pay full price they give you drinks and/or lunch. Much better course for layout and conditions than Clear Creek or County Place.

Worth the drive

Beautiful course. Fantastic layout. Greens are flawless and a little quick. Fairways are pristine. Rough is very tough to play out of, a little spongy, which made chipping a fun challenge. Would have liked to see a better course map / hole layout guide as there are some semi-blind shots I would have played differently had I known where I was headed. Staff was friendly. Played in a relaxed 4 hours on Sunday morning. Equivalent in quality to Black Horse (when Black Horse is at it's best). Drove from downtown Houston and will be back again, well worth the 1hr drive.

Fairways are dry. Greens are average-- a little slow and bumpy but reasonably receptive. Fairways and rough are indistinguishable and a little hard and bare. Tee boxes need some attention. None of the tee boxes face the fairway or green which is a little annoying. Bunkers have pebbles if they are not bare. Course layout isn't too exciting and is very flat. Overall average municipal course. Wouldn't bring friends to play but for a cheap weekday round is ok.

Long drive

Got a very good deal on GolfNow for a Saturday round. Was a long drive from downtown. The course was nicer than I expected after driving through the town on Crosby on the way in. I really liked their new carts with the ball and club washer on the side. They had lots of greens under repair, you could play onto every green but at least half the greens had large areas covered in sand. Sand traps have pebbles in the sand. Fairways and tee boxes have healthy grass (but different grass species on different holes). Fairways needed to be blown, had lots of leaves. Layout was interesting except the ~5 holes which were narrow with houses. Played the back tees and it didn't feel like 6900 yards-- the par 4's are all short, most of the distance is on par 3's and 5's. Shot under par without much difficulty. Overall it looks like they're putting some good effort into repairing greens and course conditions as a whole. The course is comparable to Country Place (prior to renovation) or Clear Creek. Would play again for this cheap (<$20 on a Saturday) if not for the drive, will probably play elsewhere instead.

Much improved

Played this course prior to renovations and was very disappointed. Decided to give it a shot after they redid the course (sp. green complexes) and was pleasantly surprised. Greens are now playable, albeit quite hard (as are nearly all new greens), but reasonably quick. It is difficult to score below par since even spun wedges have a good hop on the firm greens, and while they are quick they are not mown perfectly smooth and have some inconsistency. The fairways are very nice, you can take good divots even in the hot dry summer. Rough is very sticky but not too thick. Course layout is reasonably interesting with some good variation and forced layups. Only complaint is the tree next to the 13th tee box needs to be trimmed, it blocks the entire fairway from view from the back tees (have to hit 40yd slice drive).
Staff inside is pleasant and accommodating. Weekday afternoon round took 2:15.
I had no intention of playing this course again until they redid everything, but now I will be back for $20 weekday or $30 weekend round.
Still not the nicest course in the area, but I will be back for a casual round.

First time

First experience at El Dorado. There was some minor confusion with Pro Shop about GolfNow tee time, but it was quickly sorted out after calling GolfNow help desk. Starter and inside staff were all very friendly. There were a number of groups on the course today, all very friendly and let others play through when slow. Cart service >5 times in my 3 hour round.
Course layout is moderately challenging, mostly due to narrow landing areas on fairways. Especially enjoyed some of the forced layups, particularly #17 -- very fun hole. Minimal forced carries. Rough was a little thin (Winter conditions), fairways were in excellent shape for this time of year. Greens were above-average size, well protected, rolled 9-10, smooth, ball rolled straight. I did not notice the weeds on the greens to which other reviewers referred. One of the greens had ~15sq ft sandy under repair, but not significant on the large green. Holes cut very crisply, no lip-ins allowed. Plenty of bathrooms and water fountains.
El Dorado is by no means a PGA-tour quality course as the GolfNow description attests (i.e. GCOH), but is well above what is expected from an average public course. Layout comparable to Cinco Ranch but green speed and roll superior. All aspects better than nearby Pearland golf courses. Added to my list of courses to play again.
Recommendations for improvement: in dire need of proper range balls. Posting distances to water/hazard on forced lay-ups would be very helpful.

Thank you for the detail Pickelt11. Our grounds crew and Super have had their work cut out for them this year. Regarding the possibility of hosting a pro event, we believe that with the extra rest and care that comes with a PGA/LPGA event, that El Dorado could be a true test for pros with the rough up and the fairways a little narrower.
