Alta Sierra Country Club
Played On 02/26/2024Bumpy clumpy shaggy fairways
I give 3 stars due to the fairway conditions & no food / beverage in the morning (off-course amenities) both of which equates to the “value for the money” selection. Honestly, maybe 1/2 to 25% less greens fee would have been applicable. I understand the rain we've had this winter, but I want to return sometime this summer to see if conditions change. Maybe the greens fee would fit then. Most of the fairways are not just extremely bumpy (soil conditions for the area?), but a lot of grass clumps everywhere. Other fairways were shaggy & apparently not cut when the opportunity arises (in between the rain?). There were only a few really bad soggy spots I noticed though. Using the cart, I was trying to stay on the path to avoid bouncing all day in the fairways, but a lot of paths are cracking like tree stumps are pushing up, so I still bounced (!). I just took it easy. The conditions allowed a lift & clean, but the clumps require moving the ball anyway or most of the time you're going to chop at the ball. The greens were well taken care of for the conditions though. Very consistent. The bunkers weren’t too bad considering the weather & most had enough sand but rain filled some too. Greenskeeper staff were out & friendly during my play. That's cool. I admire what they can do with what they have available under these conditions. The snack bar / restaurant wasn't open until I made my turn & got a cold sandwich (forgot her name but she was wonderful). I expected to grab a granola or something early from the pro shop to start my round but they do not have anything in there. Nice shop, but no snacks. Eric was there & he was very courteous & professional to me. I like the layout. Enjoyed the elevation changes. Again, I want to see how different the course plays in the summer. Not sure this is actually a Country Club anymore though. This is a lot, but hope it helps.

Played On 01/11/2024Not informed of cart path only
Yes, in the big picture w/ a "HotDeal", value for the money was excellent. Course is above & beyond, kudos to the greenskeeper & staff. But... I'm not happy with the fact there was no indication nor any information or verbal communication for that matter regarding cart path only. This is a real nusance. On occasion I would have to carry my bag not knowing which of a few clubs necessary depending on the lie, etc. of what I cannot see on the other side of the fairway or the rough. Especially when I was the longest or most accurate player in the group, I'm waiting on them before I can proceed. Then, off to my ball with a number of clubs (or my bag) & I'm in the rush mode. I need to be sure I have the right club for the lie & the shot necessary. Not different from riding or walking directly to your ball. Same principle. So not good. Please advertise cart path only conditions. Please! I wouldn't have gone there in this situation. Lesson learned, got a "HotDeal", I will call the course 1st.

Played On 10/10/2023Good value using Hot Deal (only)
First off, I'll mention the overall facility & staff are wonderful. But if I played w/out the Hot Deal (about 1/2 off or so) I would be disappointed for 3 things. To begin with, I couldn't temporally replace the rubber tee on the driving range matts. The matt must be glued in. The rubber tee was about 2 1/2 inches high. I wanted to use my own which allows me to place a normal size tee in as I wish to practice my shots. Maybe I couldn't step forward into the grass since no one was. Wasn't going to be the guy to be squawked at. Next, the fairways. Loaded w/ crabgrass & over watered. The other, although told they were doing fine were the greens after 3 weeks ago having been punched. They will be great in a couple more weeks, but they still need some time. Should have been told they still have punch holes that catch your ball in the row and holds it there. Real bummer. I'll be back, must be a deal though (because of the fairways) but much longer after the punch or surely before. Hope this helps!
Teal Bend Golf Club
Played On 12/03/2017Great course, nice challenge, but fairways need work, practice tees on the grass need to be moved
Love this course. Nice challenge, good length, fast greens. But the fairways a bit dry with patches of grass. Need some work on this real bad. Practice facilities are awesome from grass tees, large undulating green, bunkers w/ balls everywhere to use. But the practice tees were so worn out, dry & full of divots, we joked on the course how we surely know how to hit this shot because of the fairway conditions. Anyway, will return again another time of year to compare.
Rancho Solano Golf Course
Played On 10/09/2017Great course, good challenge
Love this course. Layout, nice greens, most fairways smooth cut. Greens were a bit soft & not running too fast. Undulation is awesome. Expected a bit firmer & faster. Nice pro shop staff & selections. Range is a bit short in length and uphill. A bit odd in my opinion. Being a holiday, I would expect parings to be full. We had a 2-some behind us (Hhhmmm!). Will return, compare conditions another time of year.
Micke Grove Golf Links
Played On 07/30/2017As expected
Didn't expect much more than a public course with a lot of use would offer. The staff in the pro shop were great. Very customer oriented. But more below on this. The range was a bit dry and worn out. Time to move the hitting area, but most of the balls were pretty good. I like the layout here offering some good challenging holes. So, making the turn we went from 9 directly to 10 and found that a lot of players must of hung out eating & drinking inside because there was no one but one group on 1 when the 2 of us Tee'd off, and now a 4-some we didn't recognize on 10. Also, there was a single following us on the front nine w/ people up his rear. He finally joined us on 10, and then on 11 another single caught up! So finally on a Saturday we had a 4-some. This should have been organized in the 1st place on a busy day by the pro shop. My only real gripe even though they were "nice" in there, they should be able to manage play. Also, not sure if there was even a marshall on course or not. But it wouldn't matter if there are singles & 2-somes bunched up anyway. A lot of details, so hope it helps you!

Alister MacKenzie at Haggin Oaks Golf Course
Played On 07/11/2015Great course conditions
The course was in great condition probably due to the recent Senior US Open played locally at Del Paso County Club. It shows if they want to make the course nice they can. It's been a couple years having played there and I've never seen the conditions so nice in the past. I look forward to playing again soon in case they begin to neglect it. In my experience in the past it was usually in fair condition at best. I really hope they keep up the recent good work!
River Oaks Golf Club
Played On 02/12/2015Terrible tee boxes and fairways, thick greens
I like the course layout here. You need to hit it long off the tee, and it has a few challenging holes. But the conditions have always been at best fair. Especially the fairways. Doesn't matter if it's been raining or there is a dry spell, the fairways are least to be desired. As for the staff, very friendly and accommodating. I will be back to play again because I like the challenge it provides. Great practice facilities with grass tees, bunkers, putting and chipping areas.
Cypress Lakes Golf Course
Played On 01/19/2015Nice hidden challenge
Great reception from the pro shop. Quite damp on the course due to early morning fog and the moisture also restricted the range to matts. The rough was a bit thick but even all around. The fairways were slightly hairy but for the most part, fairly nice lies. Winter seems to provide the nicest fairway grass here. The greens were very true and rolled well. Love this course and look forward to my next return.
