Crooked Cat at Orange County National
Played On 04/28/2017Excellence
My son and I had the opportunity to play Crooked Cat at Orange County National as the finale of a great week of golf in Florida. OCN and Crooked Cat did not disappoint. We had the perfect day, Sunny 90 with light winds. The course was in phenominal shape which has become my normal expectation of the OCN courses. Greens were smooth, quick, and true. We are both single digit players and played the Orange Championship Tees at 6900+ with a 134 slope and it provided an excellent challenge. I played almost every club in the bag. The practice area is second to none and an avid golfer could easily spend many hours just in the practice facilities. I highly recommend this property and both the Crooked Cat and Panther Lake courses. They have never disappointed on many trips over the years. My only comment as an FYI is it does take about 30 minutes longer to play than most other Florida courses we have played. It runs about 4:15 to 4:30.
Reunion Resort - Nicklaus Course
Played On 04/25/2017Great Design
We rented a house in Reunion the past week and wanted to take advantage of playing this Private facility with the guest pass included with our rental. The course design was excellent, to be expected from Nicklaus. We played it at a 135 slope. Nicklaus is a low handicap player course. Greens are very small and there is many elevation changes. Even if you are a scratch player your carry distance must be precise and executed very well in order to score well on this track. You really need to have your A Game in tact. Greens were excellent rolling at about 11 and smooth and true. Fairways were in good shape. There didn't seem to be much grass in the rough compared to all of the other courses we played in the past week. That being said with the windy hot conditions and small elevated greens this track was all we could handle without thick rough. Practice facilities were good with a chipping green, putting green, and driving range. there is no Restaurant or clubhouse just a plastic dome facility which I assume is a temporary plan. It was a treat to play this track once but it really was not good value for the money. Great layout but overpriced, beauty of a private facility.
Southern Dunes Golf & Country Club
Played On 04/23/2017A Challenging Florida Gem
My son and I had the opportunity to play this exceptional challenging facility twice over the last week on the 23rd and again on the 27th. It has quickly become and absolute favourite. The value for the money is exceptional. The course is a fantastic challenging layout. We played it from the Blue tees at 6800+ and a 134 slope. The greens were perfect; smooth, quick, and true. The entire course was in phenomenal shape. Pace of play was excellent at 3:45. The practice facility is adequate with a chipping green with sand bunker, a putting green, and a small driving range. Okay for a quick warmup. Staff were exceptionally friendly. This course may seem a bit out of the way but we were staying in the Reunion Championsgate area and it was a mere 20 minute drive. Treat yourself this is one of the absolute best courses you will play in the Orlando area and at an exceptional rate.
ChampionsGate Golf Club - International
Played On 04/23/2017New Greens not matured yet Hard as rock
I have played this course many times in the past and have always enjoyed it. It is a great layout. The issue this time came down to one major disappointment, they just put in new greens and they are hard as rock which you will not find in any marketing description for the course. We were greeted by the starter who told us straight out that the greens will not hold and that the collars are like Velcro meaning if you try to bounce one in to try and hit the collar to deaden it you are out of luck, it stays on the collar. I will give them marks for their honesty but if I would have never booked to play there if I had known that. I am a 4 hdcp and have some game. I can't imagine a mid or high handicap player garnering any enjoyment until these greens mature. With all of the great golf options available in Orlando I would pass on this course until 2018.
Panther Lake at Orange County National
Played On 02/23/2017OCN Never Disappoints
Panter Lake and Crooked Cat never disappoint when it comes to a solid test of golf. I have played both courses on previous golf trips but it had been a few years and I was happy to be back. The Panther Lake course was in excellent condition and the staff were very friendly and helpful. The wind came up as a small storm front rumbled through on our back nine which made a very challenging test even more so in 25+ mile an hour winds. Pace of play was a bit slow at a bit over 4.5 hours but overall it was a great experience. Come early to this facility and you will not be disappointed. It has one of the nicest practice facilities in North America.
Waldorf Astoria Golf Club
Played On 02/22/2017Outstanding Greens / Great Layout / Exceptional Service
This course and facility are in a word exceptional. The Staff from Valet to Pro Shop to Cart Prep were very friendly and accommodating. The course was in excellent condition and provided a very challenging test. The greens at the Waldorf are the best greens I have ever played, and to put that in perspective I am a 5 hdcp and have had played over a 1000 rounds at courses throughout North America and Ireland. The greens were quick and true and a complete pleasure to play on. I did not see the ball so much as wobble once throughout the round, not a bump anywhere. I highly recommend this course. It is not cheap but absolutely worth every penny.
I absolutely will give the course another opportunity when I return in 2018. I like the course design and it is a first class facility. I booked my round on Golf Now and I did not see any of your communication attempts mentioned on there. Happy to give the course another play. Thank you for the reply to my review.
