Union Hills Golf & Country Club
Played On 05/31/2017Got what we paid for.
We have played this course a few times. When you arrive there is a cart with your name on it waiting by the parking lot. Nice touch. The gentleman in the pro shop shop does not give you the warm fuzzies but he's efficient if not friendly. Nice driving
range and very affordable. The course is basic with a few interesting holes. The front nine was in decent shape for this time
of year. The back nine was very dry with a lot of brown. Actually had to hit several shots from hardpan on the fairways. Since
this is the transitional season it's kind of what we expected. Greens were fine. What we didn't expect was the incredibly slow
pace of play. When we tee'd off (8:00 AM) there was no one in front of us. We played six holes in just under an hour and
figured we'd be playing at a nice relaxing pace. Then on the 7th hole we caught a threesome with a foursome in front of them. Everything changed. Our three hour round turned into four and a half hours of endless waiting. We're not good players
when the pace is slow. We get frustrated, rush our shots, and lose interest. Towards the end all we wanted to do was get off
the course. There actually was a Ranger but all he did was drove by a couple of times and apologized for the slow pace and
told us to be sure and stay hydrated. Oh well, we got a great Hot Deal from Golfnow so we'll just hope for a better experience next time. It's still a good course for the money.
Sun City Country Club
Played On 02/22/2017Great Time
Played this course a couple of other times but it is in much better condition now. Didn't know it was a shotgun start when we booked it but I guess it didn't matter. Paired up with a couple of Canucks and had a great time. Staff was very friendly and to top everything off I played better than normal. Can't way to go back!
Pueblo El Mirage Golf Club
Played On 11/12/2013OK but could have been better.
We had heard about thiscourse for a while so we thought we'd give it a try. Since overseeding is done, most courses rates have gone up but the GolfNow special was pretty reasonable.
The Pro Shop staff was cordial and said we could tee off when we were done hitting practice balls. On the range I talked to a foursome who said their tee time was after ours. When we were ready to play the starter sent them out ahead of the two of us.. I was annoyed because we are fast players but I didn't say anything, just stewed as we waited on nearly every shot. The course was pleasantly in pretty good shape. The grass was plush and well groomed. The greens were a little slow but you have to adjust (that's golf). The bunkers had more dirt than sand and water came into play on many shots. All in all not a bad course. The foursome they put in front of us played at a very respectable pace and after a few holes they hardly held us up. We finished the front nine in under two hours and since there was no one behind us, we stopped for a bathroom break. Big mistake! When we got to the tenth tee there was a single walker just in front of us. He walked slowly, he froze over every shot for what seemed like an eternity. He always left his bag in FRONT of the green and then took his time fussing with his clubs before he walked (seemed like crawled) to the next hole. After several holes of us waiting on EVERY shot I finally asked him how he got ahead of us? "The pro shop sent him out, he said". He apparently didn't know any better or simply didn't care that we were obviously much faster players. He never offered to let us play through. We finished in four hours fifteen minutes. It could have been 3 1/2 if the Pro Shop had extended us the courtesy normally given to a group making the turn. We can't complain at all about the course, just the way we were treated.
Arizona Traditions Golf Club
Played On 8/15/2013Always enjoyable
We have played this course many times and never had a bad
experience. Considering the time of year the conditions were
very good. The greens were very slow but we adjusted to them.
Plenty of cold water on the course which is a must when it's 110.
It's hard to believe this is the sister course of Great Eagle which
is the worst conditioned course in the Valley. When the price is
right, you can't go wrong at the Tradition.
Wigwam Resort - Blue Course
Played On 8/7/2013What a great experience!
We normally play public daily fee courses (to be honest) which
are on the less expensive side. Playing Wigwam at a discounted
rate was a wonderful experience. We arrived a little late because of road construction and the staff said "no problem" hit
as many practice balls as you and just tee off when you're ready. Everyone (employees) we encountered greeted us in a
super friendly manner and made us feel they appreciated our
patronage. The course was well maintained and relatively easy
which is just the way we like it. The pace of play was fine and the beverage cart girls came around several times. All in all one
or our favorite rounds of the summer!
Great Eagle Golf Club
Played On 6/11/2013What's happened to this course?
We have been playing Great Eagle for three years, mostly because it's close to our home. Although it's never been pristine, it's condition has at least been proportionate to it's relatively modest green fees. All that has changed. When we played yesterday we were hugely disappointed. Great Eagle, quite simply, is in the poorest condition of any course I have EVER played! There is no grass on this course. No grass on the fairways, no grass in the roughs, no grass on the greens.
I can't tell you how many times I drove the ball in the fairway and had to hit my second shot from hardpan. Same thing on the greens. I managed to sink a 30' putt (pure luck) that changed direction 8 times! I don't know if this course is going out of business but it doesn't appear that they have ANY interest is course maintenance. Too bad, we previously enjoyed playing there but for now it's a frustrating waste of money ( at any price).
Oakcreek Country Club
Played On 10/15/2012A great day in Oak Creek!
Played at noon on a monday. This has so far been our best golfing experience since we moved to Arizona. The Club was easy to find following a less than 2-hour drive from Phoenix. The staff was super helpful and friendly. We arrived early so we hit range balls and when I asked "how much" they said "don't worry about it, hit as many as you want". The carts were the nicest I've ever driven (electric) including coolers filled with ice.
The range balls were new and washed and the range hitting area (grass) was large and well maintained. When I asked about the coure rules they said "be responsible with your cart and have a good time" How refreshing! The course was in great
condition and fairly challenging (from the blue tees). Almost every hole was a dogleg with strategically placed bunkers. The landing areas were generous but if you missed, the rough was
thick and deep. The bunkers had all been groomed and the sand was soft and playable. Our only problem came at the refreshment window after our front nine. We stopped to get a quick snack but the lone worker was completely overwhelmed and after waiting several minutes we had to leave empty handed. To their credit, they sent a girl out in a cart to find us and she brought us some food and beverages. Our 4-hour round was completely enjoyable (buoyed by my two birdies) and we can't wait to play this course again.
