Wife's Happy, I'm Happy

When my wife and I play together I usually wait until sometime during the closing holes to ask her how she likes the course. Today she surprised me, despite a less than stellar round, by saying she liked Cypresswood because the forward tee boxes made her feel like she could compete. This is something she doesn't get from other courses where the average female golfer struggles to achieve par on the 4's and 5's.

Other than a few soggy spots in the fairways the course itself was in decent shape - greens were fast, rough was not a factor (never lost a ball), bunkers held soft sand, but tee boxes could use some TLC.

Pace of play was affected by it being a beautiful Sunday afternoon and back to back twosomes following a foursome. But we still finished in just under 4 hours.

We will be back.

Course Has Seen Its Best Days

I agree with the other reviewers - this course has seen better days and seems to be going the way of other "older" courses that lack the funding to give playing facilitiies the proper care to keep golfers coming back.

We did have fun, though, and caution others not to expect much in the way of manicured tees, fairways, greens and cartpaths.

The clubhouse, however, was bustling with activity in the middle of a Thursday as women's groups were finishing their rounds and heading for the dining factility.

Another thing we noticed was the attention youth were getting. As we were finishing our round there seemed to be a high school tournament in its early states with lots of parents in attendance. Good for the game and for the course. I wish them both good luck!

Cart & Paths Bring Rating Down

We loved everything about this course enough to give it 5 stars except the dangerously wobbly cart and the cracks in the paths, which we consider part of "Course Conditions." And by the time we finished there was no one around to explain these to.

Hilly Parts Cause Downward Scoring

This is a great diverse track with wide and narrow fairways, flat and rolling greens, left and right doglegs, creeks and ponds, short and deep rough. One rarity - there are only 3 tee boxes and they are designated as 1, 2 & 3.

Conditions were ideal, from weather, staff and tee boxes to fairways and greens. There is an occasional need for caution as a few front fairways run side by side .

Pace of play was slow. We were a twosome following a single following a threesome. Why the threesome wouldn't let the single play through was a mystery. Several tee shots required a 5 to 10 minute wait as we tried to make out whether the single in front of us was in play.

We made the turn with a decent first time score until 3 hilly holes on the back 9 brought in blind fairway shots, forced carries over creeks to uphill greens and sloping pin placements. Boom went the scorecard.

Ducks, geese, birds and rabbits were the only wildlife seen until our long cartpath ride from the 17th green to the 18th tee crossed paths with a doe and her two fawns (see photo).

While the course is challenging we enjoyed our day and hope to play MOKH again soon.

It's All Good

From tee boxes to greens everyhting was in top condition. Similar to many British courses (as seen on TV) this one has you face the wind on half the holes and be helped by it on the other half.

We were paired with a local who was more than happy to share all the nuiances of the course. It was like we had our own caddie steering us around the few quirks the course has to offer.

We highly recommend and plan to play again later in the week.

Slow & Squishy

Course obviously has a drainage problem as we had to endure "cartpath only" throughout the entire 18 holes. And even then we had to be careful where we stepped as mindfields of squishy ground would block the pathway to our ball. All of this, along with strong winds, led to pace of play of over 5 hours.

One plus were the greens - most were in excellent shape except 18 which had numerous fungal patches near the fringes.

The reason I'm recommending this to friends is the GolfNow price and the hope that one day the course will dry out enough to encourage normal play and cart usage.

Getting Better

We play here quite frequently and the new ownership and management have made some definite improvements to the grounds around the clubhouse giving it a classier look. However, the restaurant and bar are temporarily closed - no mixed drinks or sandwiches, other than hot dogs. The pro shop still sells drinks and snacks.

Some fairways are receiving some much needed sodding but the rest of the course is in great shape with some of the best greens in the area. The only reason it doesn't get 5 stars is the cart paths. While they've filled in a few holes with a concrete mixture over the winter there's still a long way to go to get all of them into passable shape.

The new management has also lowered the rates to attract more daytime business so give it a try some afternoon. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Classic Layout With Lots Of Character

This is not what we've come to expect from most Florida courses that are flat with lots of water and narrow fairways. Rocky Bayou features hills, valleys, generous fairways, short rough, ample greens and few water hazards.

Our threesome was joined by a fourth who knew the course and steered us through doglegs and blind downhill shots to water hazards.

Drives ran forever on well-mowed fairways, greens were fast and undulating, bunkers were not a nuiance, well placed oaks and pines disguised the surrounding subdivisions, and the staff was friendly and helpful,

Everything worked so well that if we lived in the area we would want to be members. We will definitely be back!

If Only...

Having never played here before we were expecting a "resort" feel as the name "Bluewater Bay Resort" on their website would imply. Back in the day this was probably a cool 3x9-hole layout. Today it's down to 2x9, and only the second half is receiving the normal TLC a course deserves.

You get the feeling it's on its last legs as most of the facilities have not been updated. We joined up with a local couple who helped us navigate the meandering cart paths through dense neighborhoods. While the first 9 fairways and greens showed their age the second 9 looked newer and well kept.

Compared to current local pricing this was not worth more than the $30 GolfNow Hot Deal we got.

The Good, The Bad and The Rough

The Good - this is my favorite course within a half-hour of home. It's well managed with excellent staffing, pristine sloping fairways, beautiful scenery and homes, and mostly well-manicured greens (more on that later). The enlarged and improved restaurant even make it a desired destination for non-golfers.

The Bad - it's not for the faint of heart. After starting on the white tees, we played the greens on the back nine because the course had become longer than our 2-year absence remembered. We had forgotten why it's been home to the Monday Qualifying Round of the Barbasol Open the last 2 times it's been held in the Lexington market. There are more doglegs than straight shots, and then add in fast greens.
By the way, a few of the greens are infected with a type of fungus, and have been for a number of years.

The Rough - again it's been a couple of years since we've played here but were surprised the rough was so near to the well-groomed fairways and so smothering. There didn't seem to be a "second cut" as at most courses. We collectively lost between 6 and 8 balls, several landing just off the fairway but never to be seen again.

For a novice, the course can be frustrating due to its length, slopes, doglegs, blind shots and speedy greens. So, beware. But for most The Good may outweigh The Bad and The Rough to make for at least a pleasant round of golf.

Dampness Not A Deterrent

We played the day after an all-day rain in the area. The course drained well but was still littered with mushy places on the fairways. A few were even cartpath only, which contributed to slow pace of play.

At first glance there seemed to be water hazards everywhere, but the ample fairways helped keep most of them out of play. The varied layout presents some extremely challenging holes along with enough fair ones to make the common player eager to return.

We hope to play here again under dryer conditions because it's a course that was pleasing to our eyes and pocketbook.

Constantly Consistent

We've played here and its companion course, Robber's Row, before and have come to count on friendly service, excellent tee boxes, long rolling fairways, well kept bunkers and fair and fast greens.

This round did not disappoint as the course was in excellent shape even in the winter months.

We will be back.

Pace A Royal Pain

Royal St. Cloud is one of our favorite courses in the Orlando area. Its tee boxes, fairways and greens are always in top shape and this day was no exception.

We’ve played RSC several times and always had a pleasant experience. This one started out that way and ended up a 5 1/2 hour ordeal.

First, due to some type of renovation on the White course everyone was relegated to the Blue/Red circuit and if I had my druthers I’d stay away from Mr. Red - I’ve never had a good round because of the narrow fairways and water boundaries. Don’t get me wrong, it’s very challenging for most golfers, just not my preference.

Second, we were a twosome placed behind a threesome behind another twosome behind another threesome (notice a pattern?). This made for an extremely slow and frustrating round and we and the threesome ahead of us sometimes waited 20 minutes on the tee box or fairway. Oh, and behind us was another threesome who also had to be patient. No one seemed to get upset but the frustration levels were noticeable.

Normally RSC gets 5 stars but this rounds’ pace of play pulled it down. I still recommend this course but you may want to check how busy they are before you schedule the rest of your day.

Mystic Moistless Mystique

This was the first of 3 rounds played here over a 5 day period (the available Hot Deals were irresistable). The weather featured at least 3 afternoons and nights of downpours in the area. But with other area course conditions being less than ideal Mystic Dunes' were surprisingly ideal. I even called the course the morning before one tee off, expecting something like "cart path only," and there were no restrictions.

The undulating fairways are in immaculate condition, featuring what we call the "Florida roll." The greens were faster than we're used to back home.

The staff were cordial and the restaurant had lunch options readily availabe for quick pickup. We were allowed to go out as a twosome which made pace of play a pleasure.

A shout out to starter Pedro who offered to cart me to my car prior to tee off to get something I'd forgotten.

I highly recommend Mystic Dunes, especially if the Hot Deal tee time is still available the day before or day of.

Best Conditions Yet

We've played this course numerous times over the past 5 years, and several times this season and this round featured the best tee boxes, fairways and greens ever. An overnight rain helped.

However, all of that did not help our scores which featured numbers we nomally post. The hilly fairways and small greens are still some the most challenging around.

We hope to get back again before the season is over.

Making a Comeback

We'd read the other reviews but couldn't comprehend the damage done to the area until droving through the neighborhood to get to the course. So many trees had been downed that the course has had to have taken on a whole new look of openness to the members and regulars. To us it just looked inviting.

Fairways are in excellant condition, as are the tee boxes and greens. There is not a lot of rough except were tress have been removed and mulch as been piled up. Plenty of doglegs in either direction make it fun for all kinds of drives. Bunkers are in professional shape with what would have been soft sand except for an overnight rain.

One comment about the greens - we didn't see a single ball mark on any of them, which is a testament to their firmness and TLC. We appreciated that.

The management is to be commended on the condition of the course and the ever changing landscape it's presenting.

We will be back.

New Day, New Way to Play

This is the first course my wife and I played a full 18 together about six years ago and it remains one of our favorites. However, since joining a nearby course we hadn't played it in over a year. And, a few things have changed.

It was always one of the longest (#9 was 520 from the whites). We learned, however, that as of last year all local municipal courses encourage patrons to "choose your tee based off the yardage you hit your typical drive - not by gender or age." So now there are six tee areas ranging from a carry of 275 (#6) to 175 (#3-gray) down to 125 (#1-white). Also, tee to green is now measured in units of 5 (ex., 365, 215, etc.). However, due to COVID-19 issues none of the areas were marked nor the yardage signs revised, so I got out my phone and used the 18Birdies course GPS.

Since my drives carry about 175 and total a little over 200 I decided to use the #3 or gray tee distances. In a lot of cases this moved me near the previously marked forward tees. I found this a more satisfying way to play since I could now make several greens in regulation, something I had frustratingly failed to accomplish on this course through the years.

The course itself was in excellent shape - the greens were firm, super fast and true, and the fairways had been freshly mowed. But because of the virus crisis there hadn't been time to prepare the bunkers so you were encouraged to lay out of them for the time being.

Lakeside is still one our favorites, and with the new local rules regarding tee placement they've made it even better. We are now looking forward to giving the other municipal courses a try.
