A Gem Far Away From Home

Look, we all know Florence is far away from Phoenix. Heck, I live in Gilbert and it's a major haul to get down there.

But...this course is worth it. Always in great condition, never a bad lie in the fairways, tee boxes in great shape. actual rough rarely seen in Maricopa or Pinal County, and greens fast and true. Only ding are the bunkers, which could use some more sand in many of them.

Fairways are wide and forgiving, but the Bermuda grass really holds up your ball, so it plays a lot longer than the listed yardage. I was playing from the whites (about 6200 yards) and I'd guess the course played closer to 6600 yards without the roll out I usually get on my drives.

Great facilities, huge grass driving range with balls provided, great putting green. Electric carts with coolers provided.

Honestly, though, the best part about Poston Butte is the customer service. Even for a Troon facility, PB is second to none in staff friendliness, a helpful attitude and just creating a great golf experience. It's so rare to be able to say that without reservation in this town, but I've never had less than a 5 star experience from any staff member.

Good course for Summer

My second time playing RR. Facilities are excellent: an 18 station green driving range and multiple putting greens, clubhouse top notch. Employees all friendly and helpful, even to those who do not live in the community.

Carts are gas powered and were probably the fastest carts I've had in Phoenix. No cooler provided, so glad I brought my own. There are two ice machine on the course so keeping drinks cool not a problem.

Course conditions: Tee boxes level and green, though some might be considered a little too lush. Fairways overall are in good condition, though some (like the first fairway) have some major roped off areas where turf is under repair. Fairways are wide and generous, which is important because the Bermuda grass will grab your club and twist it in the rough. Greens were moderately paced and a bit bumpy; I had a few putts get pushed to the left as the ball approached the cup. The one bunker I was in had good thick sand in it and was very playable.

Overall, a moderately difficult course but an enjoyable track. Will definitely play here again.

Meat and potatoes

Purchased the Back 9 and Breakfast for $30. Arrived at 7 AM for 7:26 Tee Time, after I checked in, the gal in the pro shop said I was good to go.

AZ Golf Resort is a generally flat course with essentially similar holes. If you stay on the fairway, you'll have a flat lie. There is some mounding in the rough areas as well as around the greens.

Tee boxes in good shape, fairways had good lies though there were a number of muddy, overwatered spots that you should play as "casual water." Fairway bunkers are poor: there is no sand in them, just lightly compacted dirt. Bunkers around the greens were somewhat better. Greens ran true and were about 9.5 on the Stimpmeter.

Staff was excellent, including those in the dining area. During thw inter, this is one of the main HQ's for snowbirds, so e prepared for 5 hour rounds. In the summer, course can be wide open and played in under 2.5 hours.

Nice Executive Course

With Greenfield Lakes looking more like an episode of GoT after the dragons got ahold of it, Sunland Village is a very nice, close by alternative for those looking to play a shorter course in the east Valley. Lots of water scattered throughout the course, trees line many fairways making it imperative to keep it in the fairway on the "longer" holes.

Entire course is green, even in the dead of summer. Tee boxes in good shape, greens were true and well conditioned, bunkers needed a bit more sand to make them more playable. Staff was courteous and friendly even to someone who doesn't live in the Sunland Village complex, which is sometimes an issue at other courses.

Very nice course to practice your mid and short irons. Also has an all grass driving range and practice putting green. PoP was about 2.75 hours.

Nice little track

Was 2nd group out on a sunny Sunday morning. No practice area available in the morning, so went out cold. Course consists of 3 9-hole tracks, with between 1-3 Par 5s per 9 and 3 Par 3s.

Tee boxes were in good (not great) shape, some tapering in certain areas but no real issues of which to speak. Fairways and rough are green with a few areas needing more coverage but this mostly a green course throughout. Because of that, there is quite a bit of puddling along the cart paths, but not too bad in the fairways. Greenside bunkers in terrific shape, plenty of soft sand from which to hit, one fairway bunker I was in had some standing water and mud in it.

Greens were moderately fast, and had more break than most public courses, which was a nice change of pace. Some bumps, some ball marks, but overall ran true.

Excellent customer service throughout. 3.5 hour PoP, could have been faster but the ability of the three players I was with were the only thing that kept us from a 3 hour round.

Good Course, Dreadful PoP

Don't get out to the west side much, but scheduled an 11am tee time here as I had business in the area. Pleasantly surprised to find out range balls are included in the price, and the range was in great shape.

Course was in solid shape. Most tee boxes in good condition, fairways mostly covered in grass with some bare areas in landing zones. Greens were a little bumpy, appeared to have been aerated a few weeks ago and still showing signs on certain holes. Both greenside bunkers I was in were in tremendous condition--plenty of soft sand from which to hit.

Course is fairly standard, which some generous landing areas on many holes. I played from the Silver (middle) tees, which seemed about right for a mid-handicapper who hits the ball in the 220-230 range. No water holes on the front nine; water only really comes into play on the back nine on a few holes where you really have to mishit to find it.

Biggest issue was pace of play. Seriously, how is possible that on a 100* day in June that it still takes over 4.5 hours to complete a round? Really need some rangers out here to move things along.

No Frills

Painted Mountain is a good, no frills golf course. I play here when I want to have a good round. I'm a 14 handicap but usually golf in the 75-80 range here.

Except for the first hole (long par 5), course plays fairly short. Tee boxes in good shape, fairways are still green in most places, and greens yesterday were firm but moderately fast, Little real rough to speak of, just sparse grass/weeds or hard pan if you stray from the fairways. Bunkers appear to have good sand in them, but I wasn't in any so I can't give first hand account.

There is no driving range here (odd given that this a John Jacobs Training Academy location), so just a couple of putting greens to get warmed up and off you go. The only real water hazard is your first shot on Hole #1; other than that you really need to stray for water to come into play on two of the Par 3s and then #18.

Gas powered carts, no GPS, cart paths can be rather bumpy in places, so those with back issues watch your driving. In the summertime, bring your own ice chest; in the winter, bring a lot of patience because this course is FILLED with snowbirds. I'd guess 60% of the homes surrounding PM are empty right now.

PM is very reasonably priced off season. Not a bad course for practicing mid-range irons and your short game. Longer hitters can amuse themselves with trying to drive 3-4 of the shorter Par 4s.

Always Fun

Scottsdale Silverado is a nice change from the resort courses and super-expensive courses in north Scottsdale. Staff was universally pleasant to deal with, from check-in to the pro shop to the cart girl and course marshal.

The course itself is usually green, with a few forced carries but nothing extreme. Gold tees are the longest,, measuring out at 6313 yards, but most golfers play the whites, which measures at 5,734 yards.

Tee boxes are in good shape, though showing wear on most of the Par 3's (of which there are six). Two of the three Par 5's are reachable in 2 by decent golfers. Bunkers by the greens are in good shape, while fairway bunkers seemed a bit packed. Greens rolled at moderate speed, and held good shots into them. A few bumps here and there, but generally rolling true. Fairways had a few areas with light coverage, but mostly green and rewarding to a good shot.

The biggest trouble for golfers are trees, especially on the right side of most holes. Errant shots can force some interesting recovery choices. Water really only comes into play on #18, their signature Par 3 finishing hole. Short and/or left will get wet.

Only negative is pace of play. Even at this time of year, with snowbirds mostly gone, our threesome got around in nearly 4.5 hours. While we waited to play on each hole, the biggest jam up occurred at #13, a Par 3 that had two groups waiting to play when we pulled up.

Highly recommended for most golfers. Long hitters might find the course too easy, but I've always enjoyed my rounds here.

Nice Layout, Could Use Some Help

First time I played CW this year. I usually play it 5-6/year, as I enjoy the layout, elevation changes and overall course structure. Excellent customer service in clubhouse and starters/cart girl.

The biggest challenge is that it's still early April after a pretty substantial rainy season and the course is already as dry as it usually is in July/August. CW would never, even in its best days, be described as lush, but normally a good drive would find a good lie in short green grass. Now, even a solid drive in the middle of a fairway has a chance had a fairly hardpan lie. This helps distance on drives, but wreaks havoc on second shots into the green.

Tee boxes needed work, especially #1 and #17, which doesn't look like any sod has been replaced in at least three years and could conceivably be confused with a bunker, there's so much sand (I played from Blues). Greens were also quite sandy, but still fairly smooth and held lines well. Bunkers (I was in 4) had limited sand (1" or so) and a lot of rocks and pebbles. Very challenging from which to hit.

Overall, the layout is enjoyable, the staff is excellent, but the course need to splurge on a little water to make it more playable.

Worth the Drive

As I live in Gilbert, I usually play courses on that side of town. It's always worth the drive to come out to GCU and play here, though.

Great amenities: grass driving range, putting greens, practice chipping area, large golf shop and restaurant. Great GPS on the carts, giving you all the distances you need, not just for the green (front, center back), but to carry various obstacles such as fairway bunkers and lakes. Didn't need my rangefinder once.

Course is in very good shape. Tee boxes are in good to very good condition, with some divots but nothing major. Fairways are in good shape, some bare/thin spots but mostly a whole lotta green. Rough ranges from dormant Bermuda to very thick and long green grass if stray too far away. Bunkers can be very intimidating, often very deep, but they are well conditioned and have great, tour quality sand in them.

Green are very fast, running about 12+ on the Stimpmeter, according to one of the staffers. I believe it. A Small tap from your putter and ball will roll 20+ feet, often with a double break in the putt. But balls roll true, and the green holds a good shot into it. I never had a ball run through the green once, though my playing partners who hit with less arc on their shots certainly did.

Only complaint was te pace of play. By changing the setup of the front nine and back, hole #2 now causes a traffic jam from which there is little recovery. GCU is over 6,700 from the black tees, and is far too long for the volume of players playing from their. It would be nice to have marshal to move the players along and have them hit from age-appropriate and skill-appropriate tee locations, like the Black/White combo or just the Whites.

This is my fourth time playing GCU since the conversion, and it certainly won't be the last.
