South/East at Arrowhead Golf Club
Played On 10/17/2020Fast difficult greens
Great layout that demands good course management and accuracy. Fast, sloped greens that require concentration and deft touch. Excellent conditions all around. $78 with cart is a bargain for a course of this quality, but normal rates may be higher.
Heritage Bluffs Public Golf Club
Played On 09/05/2020Beautiful parkland course
A bit further out in the exburbs but worth the drive. Great layout in a roomy, wooded setting with a nice variety of hole designs. Some elevation changes as well, which keeps things even more interesting. There were some brown patches in some of the fairways, but it's been pretty dry lately. Good conditions overall. Pace of play was slow because it was a perfect weekend day, but also because of golfers lacking etiquette. Golfers in my group hit multiple tee shots on just about every hole and even on approach shots. And yet, we weren't pressed from behind, so the whole course was on a slow pace.
George W Dunne National Golf Course
Played On 08/29/2020Great course in need of $ for upkeep
Still one off the best layouts in the area, but overall conditions are slowly slipping. Each time I’ve played here over the past several years has been slightly worse than the previous. Bunkers need upkeep. Several bald spots and potholes on many fairways. There was an outright excavation going on in the middle of a fairway. Collars around many greens have crabgrass issues, but the greens themselves were fine. An outing ahead of us made for a 5+ hour round and there was no marshall to keep things moving. There once were 4 groups on a par 5 hole. It’d be a shame if this great track deteriorates further.
The Preserve at Oak Meadows
Played On 06/06/2020Excellent course in excellent shape
Great layout, challenging for avg golfers like me but lots of fun. A course where you can appreciate the thinking and strategy behind the hole designs. Conditions were near-private club quality. Lots of nature areas, marshes and the meandering Salk Creek. Gave a lower score on amenities only because the clubhouse is under construction. Hopefully the price won’t go up too much once that’s completed. A great, great option in the western burbs.
Bear Slide Golf Club
Played On 06/29/2019Excellent Course, Great Value
Great layout, fun to play, excellent condition and superior value for the money. Front 9 is links-style and back 9 is parkland. Nice to have some elevation changes in the middle of flat Indiana. Subtle yet challenging greens in just about perfect condition. It's a pure golf place - it's in the middle of nowhere and the clubhouse and facilities aren't much to talk about (although the staff was great). It really does deserve its very high ranking on golfadvisor.
Downers Grove Golf Club
Played On 06/21/2019Best 9-holer around
I've played a good number of 9-hole courses in DuPage/Cook area, and this is the best. It's in excellent condition and is quite lovely. Given its old origins, some holes feel like they belong to an earlier era, like the 2 back-to-back short par 4s with sharp right-to-left doglegs, but one you've figured them out, you look forward to playing them the next time. $36 for 9 holes isn't a bargain, but fair enough so that you want to go back again and again.
The second right to left dogleg is not from an earlier era! It was built in 1992 and is stupid target golf that doesn't even fit in with the rest of the golf course. Course is always in good shape but nothing if anything except for a couple of hole routings is historic. Also way too expensive even for residents. 3 stars
Calumet Country Club
Played On 09/29/2018Interesting place - would play again.
A private club that was hemmed in by the expressway some decades ago. This led to reconstructions of several holes, and I was told 12 remain the original Donald Ross design. Still a wonderful place to play, and the only thing I didn't like was I-80 that was hard by several holes. Teeing off from either 1 or 10, you do get that private club feel. Conditions were generally excellent, unless you stray too far from the primary rough, and the rough was lush and rightly penal. A couple of greens were patchy. In general, the greens were fast and a few were very challenging - the type of greens where you have to know which part to hit to. Overall, you can tell that this club has seen better times, but if you go just for golf, there's something wonderful about this place.
Wedgewood Golf Course
Played On 10/08/2017Solid course in good condition but unremarkable
A pretty solid course in good condition overall, especially the greens. A very pleasant place to play, even if unremarkable. Generally pretty flat, except for a few holes.
Burnham Woods Golf Course
Played On 09/09/2017Dry dusty muni
A park district course that is a poor distant cousin of George Dunne. Dry dusty barely maintained fairways. Greens did appear to be watered though and were decent. No rangers to speak of. Hit a wall on the 11th tee where there were 4 groups on the same hole and it was slow going the rest of the round. Bare bones facilities. Cheap but you get what you pay for.
Coyote Run Golf Course
Played On 07/24/20176 ladies in 4 carts on one hole
This is a great course and one of the best values for the money. I consistently enjoy my experience here. On this one occasion, however, there was a group of 6 ladies riding 4 carts playing best ball together, who wouldn't let smaller groups play through. Playing as a single, I was waiting at the blue tee and watched each of them tee off, then they rode off even though they clearly saw me standing there. The green was open the whole time. I and another group ahead of me each skipped a holes. This was my only disappointing experience at Coyote Run. The ranger really needed to manage things better on this occasion.
Omni La Costa Resort & Spa - Legends Course
Played On 03/05/2017Not living up to its famous name
From tee to green the course conditions were fine but all around, the course is quite unkempt, with large bare areas from water log damage. Seems it's deteriorated quite a bit from its heyday. The ranger was quite nice. We were slow and instead of just telling us to to speed up, he raked traps, held the flag, etc. He did his best to be helpful and courteous.
Tierra Rejada Golf Club
Played On 11/19/2016Fun and challenging
Lot of dramatic elevation changes, which made it fun for a golfer from the Chicago area, and several forced carries, which add to the challenge. Several tee boxes cause you to pause and take in the vista before teeing off to the fairway down below. Definitely not a walking course, and I'm not even sure that's allowed. Greens were pretty much pristine and the fairways were in good condition considering the drought.
Odyssey Golf Course
Played On 11/16/2016Quality course with one major flaw
This is a quality golf course with one major flaw - drainage. It's in a low-lying area, there are a lot of water hazards and the course is absolutely flat. When I played, the weather had been dry for a while, so it wasn't an issue, but you could still see bare patches that had been water logged and ruts caused by golf carts. The greens, however, were in good shape and rolled true.
The Meadows Golf Club of Blue Island
Played On 11/13/2016Better than expected, but still average
You drive up to this place and it seems a little dumpy, but I was pleasantly surprised by the course itself. Quite enjoyable. There definitely were problem areas in terms of course condition and I could see how drainage is an issue in several areas, even though it had been several dry autumn days. There were several bare patches in the fairways. The greens were kept in pretty good shape, however. I would recommend this course to a friend, but with a caveat not to expect anything like a posh golf club. Quite the opposite, but still the course itself is pleasant enough to play.
Broken Arrow Golf Club - South/East
Played On 10/23/2016Another excellent facility in SW suburbs
Excellent 27-hole facility in the former cornfields of Lockport, comparable in course quality to Prairie Bluff (which is nearby) and Sanctuary. This course wends its way through a residential development like the Links and Carillon, but is far superior. Got a great deal on Golfnow.
Prairie Bluff Public Golf Club
Played On 10/09/2016Excellent course, superior facilities, great value
A good links layout in very good condition overall. Comparable to Bolingbrook Country Club at less than half the price. Quite similar to Santuary Golf Course in style, condition and value. Clubhouse/bar & grill was also superior. Real menu, real kitchen serving real food, not frozen junk that's deep fried. All in all an excellent value and overall golf experience.
Ruffled Feathers Golf Club
Played On 08/21/2016The worst of Pete Dye
All of the criticism of Pete Dye-designed golf courses over the years - too tricked up, contrived, artificial, quality of play sacrificed for the sake of eye candy - seem to be exemplified by this course. Course just felt silly after a while. Some hole routings are goofy, and at times hazardous - cart paths right into or blindly across line of fire, driving (of the golf kind) across active streets with people driving (of the automotive kind), etc. Course conditions were surprisingly bad. It has been an unusually wet summer but even the greens had severe problems - so bad that we actually had to give a putter relief and move his ball because his line of putt was so badly marred by bare patches. Pace of play was terrible - 10 minute wait on just about every tee. All in all, after a while, it didn't feel like I was playing golf at all.
Puakea Golf Course
Played On 08/04/2016A real gem, even if a little scruffy
This is a top-notch layout, starting from the very first hole with a stream lined with lava rocks snaking along the right side. Highlight is the par 3 6th with the dramatic downhill elevation change. This course has managed to remain homey and low-key, although you're afraid that some developer will come in and make it all resort-y any day now and start charging double the price or more. It would still be worth a visit. It's really an excellent, fun to play and it remains THE golf value on the island. There were some scruffy spots here and there, though. Around a few greens, there were some bare dirt patches, and several greens had that crabgrass-like weed that marred the putting surface, although they stay very flat and remained putt-able.
Kona Country Club
Played On 07/27/2016Top-notch price, but not quite top-notch
Course itself is excellent. Good layout with elevation changes and overall in very good condition. Holes 12-14 in particular are spectacular, hard by the blue Pacific. The normal $180 greens fee is too high, however. Look for discounts on the course's own website. Main complaint was with the rental clubs. Paid $55 and got a mismatched set of only 11 clubs. I was told this was the "going rate" - maybe for a complete set!
George W Dunne National Golf Course
Played On 07/09/2016Excellent course
Really an excellent course with well designed holes, and the conditions were quite good for a course owned and maintained by the Forest Preserve. The classic, un-cramped parkland setting greatly enhanced the experience. Only downside was the pace of play (5+ hours), although that was somewhat understandable given it was a clear, comfortable Saturday.
Thanks for the great review! We hope to see you back at Bear Slide again soon.
