Eagle Vines Golf Club
Played On 03/28/2021Better than most
Eagle Vines has evolved over the years and these days tends towards one of the courses in better condition.
Today’s round saw pretty good conditions but some of the fairways (the older ones) are firm and fast... even some hardpan
the bunkers have nice sand and greens had been punched and sanded so they were slow and unpredictable
Lake Chabot Golf Course - The 18 Hole Course
Played On 11/19/2017Nestled in the Oakland Hills
Lake Chabot golf course has been around for quite some time and they are working to upgrade and improve the course.
New is the driving range. They are currently working on improved course irrigation.
The course itself finds trees on every hole and nary a flat hole to be found. Getting used to the lies takes some experience and there are some forced carries.
There are also some stunning views so if the weather is clear, as it typically is, you should have views of the San Francisco Bay.
The challenges can slow the pace of play so be ready to either ask to play through less experienced players or get ready to wait.
Deer Ridge Golf Club
Played On 10/29/2017Sliding downhill
I have been playing this course for 12-14 years and the last year the course has not improved. Yes, there is sand in the bunkers but some fairways - notably #10 - are awful! The greens are good. The announced consolidation with Shadow Lakes to one 18-hole track could be good but with no on course cart service, and who knows what the practice facility will be - or not... hard to get excited about going here.
Hiddenbrooke Golf Club
Played On 09/15/2017This Arnold Palmer design has seen better days
Rumor has it the owner asked for a bare bones management contract. So there is not real sand in the bunkers, fairways have bald spots and the restaurant closes at 5:00.
The course has plenty of challenge and the layout provides something for everyone. I play this course a few times each year and the past few years have not seen improvement in course conditions.
On a sunny Friday, the course had few backups and played smoothly as long as you can find a tee box not under repair.
I have enjoyed this course for the past 15 years but this is the worst condition I have seen it.
Recommended if you can live with less then perfect conditions for the rates charged.
Eagle Vines Golf Club
Played On 12/28/2016Winter at Eagle Vines
Eagle Vines offers challenging golf any time but as wintry conditions prevail, opposite winds than normal change the way one plays the course which was designed with normal breezes off the Bay.
Many greens have differing levels and that makes putting more important. Most fairways are generous but creeks and trees can easily take balls from you.
There is an island green and it is one of the largest greens on the course. Still, it's fun to figure out what club does the job.
Eagle Vines is generally more forgiving than its neighbor track and for my dollar a better value.
The Ridge Golf Course & Events Center
Played On 07/07/2015Foothills Gem
The Ridge was a treat!
Lovely course nestled in Auburn with great conditions and challenging golf holes.
Given the drought and other courses conditions, this course is well worth the drive.
Wow SandyDad, thank you for taking the time to give us a stellar review! We love to hear that we are worth the drive. Feel free to encourage your friends to make the drive! Hope to see you soon!
Skywest Golf Course
Played On 05/25/2015Long Drives needed to score well
SkyWest golf course in Hayward is one of several dotting the edges of San Francisco Bay. It is mostly flat but has lots of distance as 6400 yards from the white tees tells one.
The course does not seem to suffer from the drought as in most cases the fairways and rough are lush. Greens were also, making putting a true adventure... Bumpy and soft, which is fine for landing shots on the greens but not easy to putt.
The range is poor and can only be used for seeing it you have a swing that delivers the shot shapes desired.
It is an easy walk and a fairly pretty course. - No views of the nearby Bay. Next to the Hayward Airport, you will have aviation noise mostly on the back nine.
With so many choices in the Bay Area, this one is easy to overlook... By accident or by choice.
Shoreline Golf Links at Mountain View
Played On 05/03/2015Golfing in the Land Of Google
Nestled between Google & the San Francisco Bay sits the Shoreline Golf Links and it boasts the Bay Area standards, winds and water. Like other courses dotting the shores of the Bay, this track feels the winds easily and uses water to keep the golfers honest.
Straight shots are rewarded though the greens can get tricky. Playing the winds becomes a necessary skill to score well here.
Wildhorse Golf Course
Played On 04/08/2015A Davis Wetlands adventure
Wildhorse Golf Club in Davis is nestled in some natural wetlands and has burrowing owl habitat within the course boundaries. Those features can be treats or challenges.
Hit the ball straight and stay out of the hazards and this course can be fairly straightforward and fun.
Some forces carries across wetlands add to the difficulty and staying away from numerous lakes requires planning one's shots and executing - just like any round.
We found this a fun course and a good mid-week rate. It is busy so getting done under 4 hours will be a trick.
Mare Island Golf Club
Played On 04/05/2015Spring Golf at Mare Island
Mare Island's golf course, like so many Northern CA courses, is fighting to stay green and be an attractive playable track. Brown fairways with some hard pan areas are not unusual. The greens are well taken care of but the bunkers mostly lack decent sand.
We played in early April and got all kinds of weather... Sunny, rainy and windy as well as calm...
With only one par 5 and 3 par 3s, the par 70 is somewhat misleading as the par 4s have plenty of challenge and the newer side of the course has larger undulating greens.
Great views of the San Francisco Bay abound but you need to keep your head in the game and be prepared for various weather conditions.
Well said, I concur.
Hiddenbrooke Golf Club
Played On 03/15/2015Hidden in Vallejo
Hiddenbrooke golf course in the hills east of Vallejo sits in a valley between the coastal influences and the warmer weather of the Sacramento valley. As such it is prone to windy conditions. By wary and bring layers.
The hilly track offers something for everyone though the uphill, downhill and side hill lies will tax most golfers. The 134 rating from the white tees places in among the most difficult in the bay area for public courses.
We played after a week of aerification, so the greens were awful to putt.
Nonetheless, if you want to play a course that was once an LPGA stop, this is worth a try.
The Bridges Golf Club
Played On 03/11/2015Target golf
I had played this course several years back and found no oone willing to play it with me recently. The Bridges is a target golf course with tee shots needing to hit targets as well as all shats made. Simply stated, if you dont hit the target, you won't score well.
the course was in very good conditons, sporting some fairway bald spots and ground under repair (like most No. CA. courses during the drought).
If you like target golf and want a challenge, The Bridges is a good test of skill
The Metropolitan Golf Links
Played On 02/05/2015February golf treat
The pre storm weather was calm and delightful and we enjoyed good conditions on the links style course.
Keeping the ball in the faurways pays premiums here and on a couple holes, forced acrries are needed to score well.
Lone Tree Golf Course
Played On 02/01/2015Seeing the effect of little raib
Lone Tree golf course is a classic track with moderate hills and difficulty in the good times.
With less rain this winter, the fairways are in a variety of conditions and they are keeping the greens as best they can
Sand in bunkers us spotty
The less than 4 hour pace of play may well be worth the price
Rancho Solano Golf Course
Played On 11/09/2014A Gem in Fairfield
Rancho Solano Golf Course sits nestled in the foothills on the north side of the city and has a country club charm with rates more in line with public courses.
Kemper Sports manages this course (like it's brother Paradise Valley) and does an excellent job keeping the course in great shape. They continue to tweak the traps and conditions as we saw construction on #7.
Greens are in excellent shape and are always remembered as enormous and multi-leveled.
I am a local and have played many other courses throughout Northern California is this drought condition and you will not find many courses in as great a shape as Rancho Solano.
Napa Golf Course at Kennedy Park
Played On 09/12/2014Well worn public course in Napa
I have played the Napa golf course at Kennedy Park many times but this time was the mist disturbing. Newly added GPS devices on the carts did not work and the course was in extremely poor condition.
Because of the drought, it is not unusual to see some brown spots in fairways. There were more than a few. Most marked as Ground Under Repair. In addition, many of the greens were showing bald spots and very very uneven. Putting was more of an adventure that driving the fairways.
A course with lots of water hazards, if you don't find the fairways you can lose a lot of balls.
Maybe we will have a wet winter and this course will recover but right now it is a mess.
Chardonnay Golf Club
Played On 08/31/2014wine country golf challenge
Chardonnay has transitioned from 2 18 hole tracks to a single 18 hole course and works hard to earn golfers dollars.
the GPS system on the carts does not work. Our cart was fine but the GPS never worked.
The actual course offers varying challenges and many of the 5 par threes require forced carries.
The pars fives offer accuracy challenges and many sand bunkers protect greens. The vineyards provide the greatest contest as they can easily eat stray shots.
Tree lined creeks also line many holes making sight lines tough and requiring shot making.
This course is likely best for intermediate to advanced golfers.
the visual beauty here is its strongest trait.
Mountain at Incline Village Golf Resort
Played On 08/03/2014Pretty good for a par 58 course
The Mountain Course at Incline Village is the sister course to the Championship Course in Incline Village. 18 holes which are largely par threes that require shot making all along the way.
The past couple summers, they have offered Family Sunday which allows children to play free with a paid adult and they have 9" holes on every green plus the regulation holes for adults. Various tee boxes allow for golfers of differing degrees of skill to enjoy this gem on the slopes of Mt. Rose, minutes from Lake Tahoe.
Inside the Lake Tahoe Basin and along the north side of the Lake, there are only a few golfing choices. The two Incline Village tracks are very good selections and for the price, it can be argued the Mountain Course is the better value.
If you are in Tahoe and want something different, try this course.
Tilden Park Golf Course
Played On 07/04/2014Berkely Hills gem
Tilden Park is a well kept public course in the hills above Berkeley.
While many Northern California course are drying out during the drought, Tilden Park looks and plays just fine with just a scant few areas showing brown grass (in the rough only).
Up & down hills with some narrow fairways to hit, thus gouts can challenge any golfer.
Roddy Ranch Golf Club
Played On 05/04/2014Hilly Track plays harder when windy
Roddy Ranch works hard for your golf $$$ but fails to impress. The challenging design is made harder by strong winds that often work the steppes of this track on the north side of Mt Diablo as it transitions to the Delta lowlands..
Many of the fairways sport bald or burnt out spots (GUR) and the bankers have pebbles mixed into the "sand" making the play out of then more dicey then a normal bunker.
The 5 hr 20 minute round was not worth it on a Sunday afternoon with winds howling.
Sandydad2,
Thank you for your comment and also choosing RRGC for your golfing needs. We have recently gone through an ownership change and have full control of the property now back in the family as a family run / owned business. While we cant control the wind, we will be making every effort to control the slow play issues and have capital expenditures earmarked for new sand! Thank you again for posting as its comments from our guests that we take seriously and will fix to better your golfing experience.
Roddy Ranch GC
I agree. Played for the first time on the 29th and was extremely dissapointed based on what I've been hearing about the course.
Thank you for visiting us at Eagle Vines Golf Club. We appreciate your 4-star rating and review. We hope you join us for another round soon.
