Tried again... still a NO

This course had destroyed fairways a few years ago and have been rebuilding since. I decided to give it another shot b/c I was golfing with a friend who never wants to pay more than about $30 for a round. Upon arriving there was no starter, and we were not paired. A dad and 7 year old son played in front of us, and 2 woman in front of them, and another boyfriend and girlfriend in front of them as the boyfriend gave "golf lessons" on the course. The greens are actually solid throughout but the fairways are VERY spotty. The course doesn't drain, so if it's been wet it will be swampy on a number of holes with slope that flows to the middle of the fairway. They need to cut back probably 50-100 trees on the course, and rather than moving limbs and debris they simply move them into piles ALL OVER THE COURSE, which makes the course look overgrown and a bit junky. The course is full of weekend hackers and folks trying to learn the game, that won't allow you to play through and don't understand pretty basic golf etiquette. If you're just learning the game, or don't play and just want to get drunk and hack it around, then the course is just fine. The beverage person inside the clubhouse told us about her massive headcold and how she's been sick for a week as she filled out water, this is during a pandemic, mind you. If you're someone who wants to improve your game, and play with good pace and conditions, do not go to this course. Spend up, go to a course with better pace of play and conditions. It's frustrating to sit around and wait for bad golfers to hit 9 shots on a par 4, if that kind of golf bothers you, don't come to this course. The Layout is solid and the greens are above average that keeps me from giving the course 1 star.

Great Jack Design

Any chance you can play a Nicklaus designed course you're in for a treat. So many courses built in the 90s value distance and being really long. This course is much more about ball placement and iron accuracy. Many par 3s are very challenging and for many par 4s you can have success leaving the driver in the bag. The greens can be challenging and roll fairly true. The best public greens go to Gateway but these are very solid. You wind through some houses along the way but the back 9 is much more wooded. If you're feeling it you can score well, if you're pulling or slicing your driver it can be a long day. Staff is great and I think overall the pace is fairly solid. I have to think more on this course than many others that I play and I think that adds a great element to the game. The course wont blow you away but it's a very solid choice considering the price. I'll play this over Tapawingo and for at least $20 less per round.

Unique Golf Experience

The loop track is like nothing I've played before. It's a throwback concept, no formal tee boxes, simply flags in the ground. The front 9 you're shooting at one color of flag and the back nine it's a different color. We had no issue finding the next hole, or anything like that. It's not your finely manicured course like you'll see at a resort or even Forest Dunes across the street. The fairways are giant, and there isn't much for rough at all, so for us it was extremely playable, you don't lose balls, and you don't get stuck in gnarly rough. The challenge starts as you approach greens. You cannot attack greens, instead you need to roll balls onto the green and there are a ton of undulation in and around the greens, it was extremely challenging to decide what to play. However the point is that you can take on each hole in a different manner. I loved it, and it's a beautiful place. I will say that after hitting several great second shots that rolled off the back of greens I was ready to play a track where I could be aggressive in attacking greens. I got a bit bored and frustrated having to hit 10-15 yards short on every hole, but it's a challenge for your mind. I also played Forest Dunes after my round and would probably advise most golfers to play both, and I likely would have played Forest Dunes first b/c I liked it better and thought it was a prettier course. Most of all it's how golf was originally played and it's cool to take on that throwback. They now allow carts so it's much more manageable.

Forest Dunes is magical

A friend and I traveled to MI for a quick golf trip. We selected Forest Dunes and Arcadia Bluffs as our 2 targets. The drive from Traverse City wasn't too bad, the place is in the middle of no where in the Huron Forest. The staff was amazing, the clubhouse was fantastic. The pro shop was great, it was first class all the way. They have a number of tees to play from so it's not overwhelming for those that just want to have a good time. The course wasn't full when we were there so pace was fantastic. Wonderful conditions, lots of sand, and a ton of waste bunkers on the back 9. This is a course that you would dream to play on a weekly basis. If I live d in the area i would 100% be a member. If you're planning a trip, this is a slam dunk with Forest Dunes, the Loop and the new par 3 course you can really have a blast out there.

Wet Day at Arcadia

A buddy and I traveled to MI to play Arcadia and Forest Dunes. The play really is special, it's beautiful and picturesque. The clubhouse is nice, but I didn't think the bar area is anything super special, so I'm not giving a 5 star for the amenities, b/c the clubhouse was beautiful but not captivating. The pro shop was fine but they need to get someone a bit younger or with better style to work on their shirts and hats, most were extremely lame and SUPER expensive. The logo isn't good, just doesn't look good on a shirt or clothing item. I was disappointed b/c I couldn't force myself to buy even a hat that I thought was stylish. The course itself is fantastic... great challenges, excellent conditions, the views, oh the views. The sad part for us was that it rained by hole 7 and we played in really cold and wet conditions through the back 9. It was difficult to fully appreciate the place b/c we were, well... wet and cold. That obviously has some bearing on my opinion of the place. The only layout fault was that multiple par 3's were the same length from the white tees, 160 yards. We paid $215 to play here and didn't have an option due to location to stop our round, although the pro shop offered us 18 holes the following 2 days but we couldn't swing it. I would play here again but at the $215 price tag it made me wonder how many great courses were around with similar topography that are MUCH better values, we passed about 10 courses on the way there. I would likely play some of the other courses in the area before spending big on this one, but if you haven't played it you should do it for the experience.

One of the best

Quite frankly I don't play Gateway more often b/c the prices can be pretty steep and most of my buddies aren't interested in paying $70+ to play a round. I've only played the course twice and loved it both times. The greens were in incredible shape. The fairways looked good, a lot of people don't know that you need to fill the bent grass divots with sand but conditions were amazing for December. Certainly a bit of the links feel, I love the native grasses and marshes throughout. If you're driving the ball well you can score pretty well on the course. Reminded me a bit of some courses in Carolina with some marshes and some controlled landing zones. The par 3's, I personally felt played tough, there is from my understanding always wind at Gateway and the angles of the par 3's made it a bit tricky but that's fun. As far as public courses in the metro this is in my top 4.

Great Round at Spencer T

Spencer T is really a nice course. It's not terribly difficult but has some nice challenges and rewards you for keeping the ball on the fairway. Many sloping fairways and greens demand some placement with irons which I really like and many places where if you miss, the ball is running down a deep, dark hill that you don't want to mess with. The pace of play was excellent, I was thrilled with that. We finished 18 right at 4 hours and we didn't rush at all. My complaint is with the greens. There were some that were pretty beat up, people not fixing their ball marks, which over time becomes a big problem. Also some spots where the greens were lost, and crab grass invaded. I'm not picky but it's the only reason I'm not rating the course as excellent. Excellent is hard to be, but the greens need to be true. I didn't think the greens rolled consistently around the course which had us guessing throughout the round. Overall, it's an excellent course. To me it's a $30-$35 course, I got a hot deal for $21 so that made it solid. I wouldn't pay $50-$60 to play here, to me it's not to the level of other courses in the metro that are charging those rates. It's worth playing but if I'm spending $50 I'm heading to Annbriar.

Solid Course, Terrible Pace

I played with a 4 some on Saturday. It was an amazing day so I knew it would be slow. I was anticipating a 5 hour round. After the front 9 we were locked in at 3 hours. We waited essentially every time we needed to hit a ball. The group behind us left and just skipped multiple holes. I've played Normandie a dozen or so times. I don't think you'll find more challenging greens for a public course and the conditions are very good for the amount of traffic. The issue is that there is a lack of public courses that are worth your time in STL, so courses like Normandie get a lot of attention. I also think it's fairly challenging and there are a ton of trees to hit which can make high handicap golfers even slower. I haven't been able to put my finger on what makes this course so slow but it's consistent. The guys in the group ahead of us said they only play the course when they have to due to poor pace of play. This didn't ruin my day at all but something needs to be done to speed up pace. Either don't book the course with so many tee times or keep a Marshall on the course or don't book so many tee times and stagger things so golfers are tee'd off on 2 before someone starts on one. Other courses figure this out, I play all of them but for some reason Normandie can't. I also think due to the hills and slope there are a numbers of blind drives or blind second shots on both the front and back 9. There needs to be a red light/green light board at the top of the hills that golfers flip for the next group when they move on to their 3rd shots. Driving to the top of the hill and coming back down to the tee box to make sure you aren't going to hit someone is silly and further slows things down.

Links in the Country

I'm always impressed when I play Acorns. I think the greens are always in great shape. They aren't challenging greens but they roll really well. The course has a mix of everything. But it's a bit of a links course, where you can run balls up to the hole and it's a bit of a shot makers course. It's very short from the white tees, under 6k yards so it's one that if you usually play from the white tees like myself you really need to play from the blues, otherwise you'll be using driver, wedge for the entire round. Pace of play has been excellent every time I've played. The only issue is the distance from STL otherwise I'd play this course all the time.

Cold Day, great experience

I was one of 3 golfers on the course. It was pretty cold and fairly windy. I bundle up and it doesn't bother me nearly as much as slow pace of play on a warm day. This is a solid track, with a variety of challenges throughout. I didn't think the greens were in great shape. They had some crabgrass and I didn't think the ball was rolling very consistently but we've had horrendous weather so that's a factor. It's an easy drive from STL and is absolutely a course I would visit again. The prices are typically pretty high, I caught an amazing hot deal so we'll wait for that to come back.

Great Course, Overbooked

I really like this course but this time around it was just completely overbooked. It wasn't an especially great day but it was nice enough to get the golfers out. Every hole was completely jammed with 4-somes, no one was letting anyone play through. I was playing alone and typically everyone allows me to play through, not a single offer so after sitting for a very long time. I decided to skip a couple of holes until I saw any kind of clearing. That took me through the entire front 9 after playing the 1st two holes. By the time I made the turn I was able to play through a 4 some and then had green grass in front of me. None of the tee boxes were marked at all, so you essentially had no idea where to tee off. I'm hoping this isn't the norm for the warm months, because I've only played here in the winter if it is I won't be able to make the drive to Alton to enjoy it. Overall, the course layout is great, it's challenging but not discouraging. Again, I like the course but if this is normal I'll be heading elsewhere.

Great Track

Really a great course, I enjoyed the layout quite a bit. I think the consistency in a greens was really special. You don't often have them rolling the same speed throughout a round, but the greens were great. The park where the course is located is really nice, no houses, no cars, just you and the golf course. Not a ton of hazards throughout the course, but from what I've heard it's usually windy. It's typically a pretty decently expensive course so I won't play here often but I'd love to.

Short Course

Someone described this course as a shot makers course. In a sense I will agree but in reality I think it's just a short course that is not only short hole to hole it's also very compact. It's 18 holes that feel squeezed together. You can almost put your drivers away on this course. There are a lot of hills that create challenges but if you hit a slope with a driver or hybrid your ball is running for miles. You can hit a lot of nice balls and they won't be anywhere near the fairway. I think this is probably a really good hole for older people who may not have as much distance as they use to have, and who like to position short iron shots. It's not expensive which is great and there are a couple of really challenging holes on this course. One with an elevated green that is extremely difficult. If you want to work on your short irons this is your course. Many holes will be driver or hybrid to wedge, almost all holes. Not the course for me.

Amazing

This was my first time and won't be my last time to this course. The weather wasn't good, it was cold, windy, and wet. It didn't bother me at all. The course layout is fantastic, staff was great everything exceeded my expectations. I really enjoyed the wide fairways, that invite a long drive and put you in great position for a 2nd iron shot. I played from the whites, it looks like the course is MUCH more difficult from the blues as the drives are much longer and more challenging. I loved the course. I got a hot deal which is the only reason I played here. At the normal price I can't afford to play here which is a shame. But I'll recommend it to anyone with richer blood than mine! I loved it, one of the better golf experiences that I've had.

First time at the Woodlands

My brother n law and I played on Sunday afternoon at the Woodlands for the first time. We're from STL so Alton is a bit of trek for us but we decided because it was a hot deal and I was willing to drive that we might as well check out a new course. For us city boys this was out in the sticks, but it's really a fun course. The front 9 in my opinion was easier than the back. Not a lot of water and the fairways are fairly wide open so if you shank a drive you can more than likely still play the ball. The back 9 has a creek that runs through several of the holes so you have to deal with that which demands more accuracy off the tee and will iron shots. The greens were rolling slow but they were in good shape. Pace of play is pretty much my pet peeve, I can't deal with standing around for 5 minutes between each shot, that's a quick way to blow a round. The course was wide open, we played at our pace and enjoyed the heck out of it. I left a lot of shots on the course, I'll be back to try to reduce my score now that I have a feel for the place.

Great Layout, very challenging

I was extremely impressed with the course layout. I thought it was extremely clever and pretty difficult. You have to be accurate off the tee, if you're not it's likely a penalty stroke as many fairways are lined with trees or water. The greens have some nice slope as well, so putting was a challenge. I'm only in my second season of golf so I'm not a great golfer, so for me it was a challenge. I had a great deal from Golf Now so I played for $20 bucks, which is an incredible value. I wouldn't have been as happy if I paid $40 for the round. I was disappointed with the Tee boxes, the grass was terrible, they were messy and just didn't look good at all. The fairway grass was poor as well, but it's winter so i expected that. I was surprised to see the grass torn up on some greens. To really judge the course I'll need to come back in the summer. I think it's a great course design and one that all golfers in the area should at least check out. I'll be back to try to improve my score.
