Arcadia Bluffs Getaways recap
This summer Golf Advisor Getaway attendees had the unique opportunity to experience not only a brand new golf course, but be joined by the architect. Our golf course architecture expert Bradley S. Klein invited Dana Fry, architect of the new South Course at Arcadia Bluffs in Northern Michigan.
Attendees on this three-day trip kicked things off with an arrival-day round at The Kingsley Club, a private club near Traverse City. Architect Mike DeVries, who designed the course and lives in the area, even came by to play with attendees.
But the main event was a two-night, two-round stay-and-play at Arcadia Bluffs. Now that the new South Course has been added, it is a true 36-hole golf resort. It was great to see all that has been happening here. In recent years, Arcadia has added a lodge above the clubhouse and they've since built more rooms and cottages for golf groups. The two 18s at Arcadia, the Bluffs and South, couldn't be more different from both an aesthetic and playability perspective. The setting of the Bluffs is one of the most dramatic in the world, while the South course paid homage to Seth Raynor and Chicago Golf Club on an inland, gently rolling property. The variety led to some wonderful critiques and dialogue amongst our participants. One evening, Klein gave an architecture lecture on recent hot-button topics in golf, including the Saturday setup fiasco at Shinnecock Hills during the US Open.
There may be no better sunset vantage point of Lake Michigan than the 19th hole here, complete with floor-to-ceiling windows in the restaurant and rocking chairs overlooking the course and lake. President and COO of Arcadia Bluffs Bill Shriver was on hand at every moment - one of the hardest working execs in the north to be sure! - making sure our group was attended to, and he even provided unique insight on the club's history.
