Best of 2016: Top 20 golf courses in Wisconsin

2017 is a huge year for golf in Wisconsin, as the U.S. Open comes to Erin Hills and Sand Valley officially opens.

But before we turn the page, let's look back at the many great courses, from around Milwaukee and Madison to the Wisconsin Dells and Kohler that received strong ratings from Golf Advisor reviewers. These destinations are well represented with some of the top names in golf course architecture, from Jack Nicklaus and Pete Dye to Robert Trent Jones Jr. The top resorts in Wisconsin are among the best in the country, but that just tells part of the story. Local golfers are a fanatic bunch, and they've enjoyed some excellent local haunts for their regular games.

To compile our state lists, we used a similar method to that of our our national Top 50 ranking . A course's score is based on their overall (50%) rating and subcategory average (50%). Reviews are weighted based on how prolific that reviewer is on Golf Advisor, and a course receives a bump in their rating if their score is better than that reviewer's average score.
