None yet that have closed in Portland, Oregon.... however one of the city commissioners is proposing 5 city owned course be closed and use the property to build homeless living. We the golfers are totally up in arms!!! These are our green spaces and outdoor recreational areas that some many people use! I think it's time for something like this is put to the vote of the people!!! So tired of Govt. telling us what we can and cannot do!!! Help!
Being a very close friend of the son of one of the owners of Heather Glen, i have consistently played that course since it opened. The increasingly disappearance of the nation's middle class and expanding retirement population are the two(imo) main reasons to be noted here. However, with the very popular Glen Dornoch across the street(hywy 17) and also their other beautiful Shaftsbury Glen off Rte 22=905, the future looks very prosperous.
In Massachusetts, we just lost a wonderful "hidden gem," Glen Ellen CC in Millis MA. It was an 18 hole course, but the green structures were absolutely exceptional!!! It was a great track, reasonably priced, and a lot of fun. Toll Brothers bought the land & bye bye golf course. Very sad day.
Dunroamin Country Club in hardwick closing November 2018 always had great memories going there with my grandfather and playing good little 9 hole track and ledges golf club in s Hadley mass another one
Crooked Creek, Fuquay-Varina, NC closed...sad! A nice course where I had my only hole-in-one enroute to a 78 that day...and now that hole is nothing but shoulder-high weeds and "plans" for a park and other "development".
I think this is the first of many to come. I bet 3,000 courses in USA go under in the next 5-7 years. Golf is not factoring in almost a generation of "influencer vacuum" , this will begin to hit in 2-3 years time. The people that didnt take up golf in the past decade won't teach their kids, nephews or anyone for that matter. You watch! Golf is totally irrelevent with the kids today.
I think we have to get the youth in our country interested in a game that is time consuming, expensive and difficult. There are too many other things that our younger generation are busy with: smart phones, Ipads, laptop computers, violent computer games, etc. We have to get them off the couch and out on a golf course and teach them how to play this wonderful game that we love so much. Clubs have to provide programs at reasonable costs and encourage local schools to have youngsters come out and use their facilities. You just don't see that many youngsters at golf clubs these days.
The tornadoes didn't hit the golf course, at Twin Lakes in Texas. Only some of the tree farm around it. The Decker family was tired of messing with it and decided to go a different direction and turned it into a cattle ranch. More money with less staff and upkeep!
Salt Creek Golf Course in Chula Vista CA, is closing on 3/18/18. A great public Links style course. Very sad day indeed.
Davis Monthan Air Force Golf course is closing 30 April 2018, used in BAT 21 film.
