Long Island known for Shinnecock and Bethpage has seen multiple courses close, one of the latest victims is The Woodmere Club, which never recovered completely from Super storm Sandy the property was purchased for real estate development and is now rotting while the developer fights for the rights to build in an already overcrowded area. Sadly this has been the fate of numerous courses from one end of Long Island to the other.

I'm 75 years old and was a caddy when I was a teen. Raritan Valley Country Club let us play golf for free on Mondays and I played a few times.

To reduce my costs, I would swim in the courses lake and find golf balls. Some people actually dropped balls in good condition in that lake. Those I would sell.

But I never took the game up as a pasttime. It was just too expensive for me. I believe that many young adults are saddled wiht student loans and they also took a hit during the Great Recession. They are just financially recovering.

Blackhawk Golf Club in Galena,Ohio. This 1964 design of Jack Kidwell was the best public course in Central Ohio. I enjoyed this course from '64 to this fall when I played it for the last time. Was it the most difficult, no. Was it easy, hell no. But when you played it to the best of your ability, you felt satisfied. It will be missed .

Little Rock, Arkansas closed two of its four muni courses this summer. Hindman Park and War Memorial golf courses closed in favor of other more pressing needs of city finances.

I think the growing shift in populations has some effect on course closings. We have a large population leaving their northern States and relocating in the southern areas.

I’ve played hundreds of courses in 10 countries including 21 of GDs top 100 you can play.
Barrego Springs is one of the best golf experiences. The course is great and the location fantastic. The Valley is a mirror image of Palm Desert on the other side of the mountain, minus 500’000 people. If you want to see what playing golf in Palm Springs was like in the 50s go to Barrego before they close. You can hear a pin drop.

Fig Garden Golf Club, Fresno, CA. Fig had been around since the 60’s. Great course. Rumor is that it’s land is being developed for houses.

I am absolutely speechless… What a pity! This was my favourite place to go since more than 25 years. There were always excellent conditions, friendly staff and very good food – just the best service offered.
Played the North-South-East several times in October, looking back, I am very happy that I could do so. I shall miss it very much and hopefully the redesign will offer at least the same valid course as the old 27 have been. Bye-bye North-South-East…

No one mentioned that on-line discounters are shrinking the margin for the courses. While length of round time, equipment prices, and a video game generation are keeping some players away, let's not forget that no one expects to pay full price anymore.
