Cobblestone Creek Country Club in Victor: A tough test in a golf-rich upstate New York
VICTOR, N.Y. -- Take it to the tips at Cobblestone Creek Country Club if you dare.
Sheer length doesn't trash scorecards at the 6,866-yard private golf course located 20 miles southeast of Rochester in upstate New York. It's the wild humps, hollows and mounds -- especially those on the greens -- that do most of the damage. Long carries over wetlands and cross bunkers off the tee add to the potential carnage.
The difficulty dreamed up by architects, Dr. Michael Hurdzan and Craig Schreiner, who designed the golf course in 1991, starts on the first tee. Smashing a long drive over a pond will set up a tough uphill approach to a severe green. It never gets much easier.
Ponds on no. 9 and no. 18 create dramatic finishes to each loop and enhance a scenic setting near the club's back patio.
While you're here, don't forget to sample the special Cobblestone hot sauce inside the spacious clubhouse. It's the perfect mix of spicy and sweet, kind of like playing the golf course. Cobblestone Creek's greens might humble you, but chances are you'll enjoy every minute of the journey.
