It's Arnold Palmer Invitational week, and even though he passed away three and a half years ago, The King will never be far from the minds of avid golfers. In this case, his legacy lives on in a stamp, just released by the United States Postal Service. It bears a photo of Palmer, in signature helicopter follow-through, from the 1964 U.S. Open. Palmer joins late journalist and author Gwen Ifill in receiving a commemorative stamp in 2020. Arnie stamps are now available through the USPS online store for $11 for a book of 20.
Golfers tend to be collectors, so this will be right up the alley of students of the game's history. The philatelists among our ranks have to be particularly ecstatic at this news. And this will give the ever-growing subset of hardcore golf purists a chance to extend their embrace of the old ways to communication. Why send a text or email when you could send a formal, physical invitation through the snail-mail, Arnold Palmer affixed to the envelope?
How appropriate it is, too, that this commemorative stamp is of the "Forever" variety. Because that's how long golfers will revere Arnold Palmer. Long may he reign over our game, and our letters.
