Cabot Pacific will add a new outpost to a growing golf resort brand in 2023

Ben Cowan-Dewar, who developed the original Cabot Cape Breton property in northern Nova Scotia, and who is also at the helm of the upcoming Cabot Saint Lucia resort in the Caribbean, announced the third outpost in his growing brand of golf resorts: Cabot Revelstoke, which will include a new golf course called Cabot Pacific at the western edge of the Canadian Rockies.

The Canadian Rockies are already home to a wider variety of destination golf options than many realize. Jasper Park Lodge and Banff have historic clout in Alberta along with the more modern courses at Canmore, Silvertip and Stewart Creek, plus the recently rehabilitated Kananaskis Country Golf Courses. In British Columbia, though, most of the mountain golf is concentrated north of Vancouver, in the Coast Mountains. But Revelstoke, a town best known to ski vacationers, is about to become the newest golf hotspot in the interior of the province.

Cabot Pacific will be designed by the new golf course design firm of Whitman, Axland and Cutten. One of the principals, Rod Whitman, laid out the original Cabot course in Cape Breton, while partner David Axland has a noteworthy career background of his own, most recently including his collaboration with longtime partner Dan Proctor on Old Toccoa Farm in the mountains of northern Georgia. The third partner in the firm, Keith Cutten, is an up-and-coming architect who published a book called The Evolution of Golf Course Design on the history of golf course architecture in 2019. The tract on which Cabot Pacific will sit has been described as a "bench," a narrow and fairly gently sloping piece of Mount Mackenzie terrain that looks hundreds of feet down at Williamson Lake and the Columbia River valley beyond. The westward exposure of the course should produce some spectacular sunset views. Despite the mountain setting, the course is expected to be walkable. It is expected to open in 2023.

In addition to the Cabot Pacific course, Cabot Revelstoke will include a 150-room lodge, plus a real estate offering. It is part of an expansion project to the overall Revelstoke Mountain Resort, which boasts a vertical drop of 5,620 feet across its ski property, the most of any such facility in North America. It receives an average of 34 feet of snow per winter.

Like Cowan-Dewar's other Cabot properties, Cabot Revelstoke is geographically remote. Though the town has a small airport, the nearest commercial hub of any significance is Kelowna International Airport (YLW), a two-hour drive from the resort. Banff is just over three hours east of Revelstoke by car.

FAZIO, FRESHENED - Coral Creek, a private club on the west coast of Florida, just reopened after an extensive renovation project by Tom Fazio, its original designer. The project included new Bermuda turf across the property, some updates to bunker placement and shape and practice facility expansion. The club originally opened in 2000, so this recent project should position the course for another couple decades of enjoyment by its membership. Coral Creek hosted the 2018 Florida Mid-Amateur Championship, an event that made national golf news when the runner-up conceded the final match after being allegedly assaulted by the winner's caddie in the parking lot during a weather delay. NEW BMW HOST - Delaware will host its first-ever PGA Tour event in 2022, and it will be a prestigious one. The BMW Championship, the second of three year-end FedEx Cup Playoffs events, will stop by Wilmington Country Club, one of the First State's top clubs. NEW BIG-TIME COLLEGIATE EVENT - The Alotian Club is inspired by Augusta National, not just in terms of small membership and immaculate conditioning, but also a commitment to supporting competitive golf. It will host the inaugural Jackson T. Stephens Cup in October 2021, bringing eight top college teams to the outskirts of Little Rock, Ark.
