Cherish the quirks of the West Links at North Berwick Golf Club in East Lothian, Scotland's Golf Coast

NORTH BERWICK, East Lothian, Scotland -- Some of the world's most iconic golf holes are found on the fabulous West Links at North Berwick Golf Club, set hard against the Firth of Forth.

In many ways this historic club, dating to 1832, personifies all the oddities that golfers love about links golf. The original Redan, the par-3 15th hole, features a green that slants front-right-to-back-left away from players. Its design has been copied around the world, but no architect dreaming of a prosperous career today would dare recreate some of layout's quirkiest holes.

Players must hit over an ancient stone wall to reach the third and the 13th greens. Those challenges are tame compared to the madness of the narrow, raised 16th green, which is dissected by a steep valley. Some call it the "best green in golf." Others consider it the "worst." Whatever side of the argument you sit, we can all agree upon one thing: Playing No. 16 is truly memorable, just like every round on this beloved seaside links.
