September was apparently a great time to play golf in Alabama's Gulf Shores region, according to your reviews.
The destination placed two of the month's top 10 courses, including the no. 1 spot: Gulf Shores Golf Club, a course that dates back to the 1960s, but was updated by Jay and Carter Morrish in 2005.

Was a hard decision to play golf or sit on the beach. We had beautiful weather that day. Glad we chose to play golf. Was a wonderful course and fun to play. Played with a gentleman who had played the course before so that helped with where to hit your shots. I played the #4 tees so had more carry over water than the ladies tees but I loved the challenge. And there was water to carry and bunkers. Loved the course layout too. Not a typical Southern course, had elevations, rough, trees etc. to contend with. Would love to play it if in the area again.

Photo of the week: Black Jack's Crossing
There's no course in Texas quite like Black Jack's Crossing, which borders the Rio Grande and Big Bend National Park. One of our top-50 reviewers Hacksalot03, called it his "new favorite course."
If you have the opportunity, go play this course. It's a one of a kind experience. When I played, they were still in their off season, and were doing some work on a few fairways for the upcoming season, but I'm sure the entire course is in top notch shape now. The first few holes are flat and you don't necessarily feel like you're playing a desert course. Then you begin to go up in elevation and see the fantastic country that surrounds the area. The 8th hole, 660 yards from the tips with an elevated tee, is unreal. Since I had the course pretty much to myself, think I spent 15 minutes on the tee just enjoying the scenery and hitting golf balls down to the canyon fairway below. All in all, course was a great experience and well worth the drive. If I'm in the area again, am definitely playing another round.
Review of the week: Skytop Mountain
Our Philly Local Golf Advisor Steve3709753 teed it up at Skytop Mountain, a mountain course in Port Matilda, Penn.
I'm a fan of mountain courses so I don't agree with some other reviews. I really enjoy is course. Between the numerous elevated tee boxes that will tire your legs out if playing the blues, and the rocks adding depth to the views, I appreciate the course. Keeping a mountain course maintained is a challenge due to water run off and vegetation challenges. I think they do a fine job and don't hide the areas built to direct water thru a fairway. I first played last year and returned when vacationing to play it twice this week. They have the Golf Boards and I used it during one round. For five extra bucks it's worth the fun to rent them. It's been a very dry summer in most of Pennsylvania. Farmers are hurting and the maintenance crew did a good job. I didn't have any dry hard lies, but like last year, when off the fairways it was not as good. The course plays shorter from the tee boxes when comparing white's to white's with other courses. That's intentional because you need to hit your shots or be in the woods or some ravine or brush placed to make you think. Greens rolled consistent. Tee boxes were in decent shape. You will get some uneven lies but in general the fairways a flat for a mountain course. Staff was friendly, club house still a small temporary building. Others who complained wanting alcohol must golf for reasons other then mine. If that matters for you maybe ask if you can bring your own. if allowed they'll let it. No complaints from me about the course. I continue to enjoy the course a lot.
